  1. I think that went well. I hope that that conversation will have some bearing on the admissions process for me...sounds like the program would be a great fit for me though.

  2. I was...checking my email?

That was my rationale for applying to Indiana. I generally tried to stay east of the Mississippi with my applications for family reasons. Washington is literally at the opposite corner of the country for me...doubt I'd have gotten in anyway. Maybe Indiana? In my wildest dreams?
  4. Thanks. I'm sure it won't be nearly as bad as I'm making it out to be in my mind. I'm just nervous because this is one of my top choices and I've wanted to work with this professor for a long time, read his books, etc. I have some notes prepared just to make sure I won't get caught with my pants down by some question about my research, interests, background, etc. and freeze up. I hope this is a good sign about my prospects of getting in...
  5. The English one is funny just because I use English majors to make myself feel better about the constant jabbing from my friends at an engineering/ag school (though I minored in English). I think it's about like how people here in Alabama say "Thank God for Mississippi"...

  10. Anyone familiar with the area and want to comment on it, give advice, etc.? My roommate is from Zeeland and says it's a nice town, but I'd like to hear from people who have lived there or at least been there.
  11. 20, turn 21 in July. Doubt anyone cares that I graduated in 3 years, doubt they'll freak out about me being too young. Age is probably just a number here, I hope.
  12. Phone interview with Dr. Johnson from Central Michigan soon...so nervous.

      Thanks...rescheduled for Saturday. lol.

  13. My POI from Central Michigan wants me to call him sometime to talk about my research interests and his ideas on them. The committee meets next week, so I'd like to get my call in before then. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing, and if so, do you have any advice for me? I'm so nervous about this...
  14. I just got an email from a POI at Central Michigan, whose books I had read before and who was the main reason I applied to Central Michigan. He liked my ideas that I had discussed with him in an email and says he would be happy to work with me if I got in. What can I expect to be asked in this call, what should I be prepared to talk about, and what does this mean for my chances of getting in? I'm a nervous wreck...
  15. I lol'd.
  16. I kind of imagined my rejection letters being something along the lines of Alfalfa's letter to Darla... "Dear kotov, we hate your stinking guts. You make us vomit..."
  17. Option football. [Guess who's from the South? Yep. Me.]
  18. That my capacity for vodka is on par with anyone in Eastern Europe, so I fit in well in my field?
  19. I visited and found it kind of stale. It's a wonder it's still able to fill people's needs. Hopefully it'll move away from the old mold if it wants to stay fresh. All those crusty old professors expect their incoming students to butter them up so heavily. And the weather, omg, you get toasted -- though you'll never run short of sunbeams. On the plus side, they do have rolling admissions, and the French and Italian programs are quite enticing. On the whole, it may pan out for you, but you better not go against the grain. I hope you're able to find a nice little slice of life at Bread Loaf.
  20. Well there's one potential hang-up I don't have to worry about. I'm just hoping not to get laughed out of the committee at the mid-level programs I applied to. :3
  21. It's gotten to the point where I even dream about being drunk, if that tells you about my coping strategies.
  22. In my case, my interests are sort of two-fold, so anyone who works with either the Holocaust or the Romanian-speaking countries is a good fit for me in all likelihood. Even professors who work with the USSR have told me they could help me, as they're familiar enough with Moldova and Communist Romania to work with me on my area of interest. So it's kind of a fluid thing. "Fit" is way more than just the professor though, and is in some ways quite intangible, IMO. A lot of it has to do with how comfortable you'd feel in a place and how much you really want to be around the program's environment, the school, the town it's in, etc. I mean, you could find a professor with very similar interests to yours, but if he's in a program where you don't feel comfortable with the environment, you may not be as productive as you could be somewhere else.
