    Romanian

Actually, that's why I applied to Indiana, so I could do Romanian Studies alongside history...however, I consider that a longshot. Either way, my research is going to relate to Romania, so I'm going to use the language either way. Is your boyfriend actually from Romania or just of Romanian descent?
  3. I had one of these and was told by the professor today that he and his colleagues were impressed by my application and that the hoped I'd be recommended for admission/funding at the vote next week. So. Yeah. I'd say it's generally a good thing, though I don't know that him saying that necessarily means I'll get in. I'd hate to get my hopes up just to get crushed and find that there were 8 people more impressive than me.
  4. NERDS! Haha, kidding. I have my own spreadsheets for this kind of stuff (mostly so that I don't have to keep explaining everything to my mother due to her sub-par internet skills). But as far as actually evaluating the decisions for my sake, I guess I'm just kind of...more intuitive and less mathematical about it? Though cost of living and amount of funding I get is certainly an object for me.
  5. Bump.
  6. So apparently some of the faculty on the committee at CMU were impressed with my application. :D

  7. If I end up at Central Michigan, my stipend would be more like $13,000. It's okay though. There aren't a lot of things I'm good at, but being poor is one of them.

    South Carolina

Sigh. Not looking good for me. It's like my fourth choice, but still. Congratulations on getting in though...maybe there's still hope for me. Also, did your status on the website change to accepted, or is it still pending?

    South Carolina

Anyone want to claim this one? I applied there (for Modern Europe, not American), so needless to say I'm pretty freaked out now. :/ Was your result also posted to the website, or not?
  10. Perfect.

Yeah, I speak Romanian alright and can read well enough to do research -- it's not a hard language; it's closely related to Spanish, Italian and French. Also working on German, as it's waaaaaay behind where it should be if I want to study the Holocaust. And yeah, everyone who gets into the Ph.D. program gets 4 years of funding, including a fellowship to study overseas for a year. He was telling me about the opportunities that you could have to get funding for language study and made that sound as though it were routine too -- I can only hope. I had considered Florida State but decided not to as the prof I wanted to work with wasn't taking students. I applied to IU and CMU, plus Clark (Holocaust/Genocide Studies -- some of the big names in the field are there + 5 yrs. funding...only 2-4 spots though), then to Auburn (perfunctory application to my alma mater, where I know who would work with me), South Carolina because it's closer to home for me and is an alright program, and then Ohio and North Texas (MA programs) on the basis of good correspondence with professors. I also went through a phase where I was uber-depressed about my chances and applied to a few terminal MA programs (Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Youngstown State -- the latter actually has academic resources that are very useful to the student of the Holocaust and I've been offered a chance to work on a research project there...but it's still not my first choice obviously) and got into all of those. So, yeah. It was my first time around (hopefully only) and it showed. My GPA is mediocre (3.9 in history, 3.5 overall), but my GRE scores were good and my letters and statement were strong...I hope they like my sample; it's on a pretty contemporary subject though...I feel okay about my chances at Central Michigan, especially since Dr. Johnson showed interest in my work. Guess we'll see. Best of luck to you with that -- doubt I'll be the one providing the competition.

He specifically told me to. I promise I wouldn't be the clingy, needy girlfriend otherwise. I'm not that anxious. He wanted to talk after he had seen my application and stuff.

I'm interested in looking at official Holocaust denial under the Ceausescu regime and the cultural memory of the Holocaust in Romania. I'm sure your stats are better than mine; he said he hadn't actually looked at my application. He was just talking about his ideas relating to my topic and the people in the department who could work with me on it, in addition to himself. Where else did you apply other than Indiana and CMU?

I had an informal interview with a professor (Dr. Johnson) on Saturday, just kinda talking about research interests and stuff. Nothing too specific, except talking about funding info and language study. He said they'd start looking at applications and discussing them on Thursday. I'm going to email him this weekend and see what happened and what kind of shape I'm in. He said there are forty-some-odd applicants for 6-8 spots. What field are you in and who do you want to work with?
  15. Has anyone heard anything? I know there are quite a few people here who applied, but I haven't seen more than a couple of results posted yet. I mean, I know I'm going to get rejected really hard, but I'd still like to know soon.
  16. A nice, relaxing (read: frustrating) round of golf tomorrow and our last regular-season intramural game on Sunday. I exist solely to hit buzzer-beating threes, but last game they couldn't screen me free/inbound the ball in time for me to get a shot off with 1.7 sec left in regulation tied at 35. I hit a buzzer-beater in overtime...too bad we were down by 7 at the time. No matter. Playoffs if we win this week. (I know, cool story bro.)
  17. Sigh, I've probably led them to believe that I'm an alcoholic. Though, if they'd notify me faster (HINT HINT IF YOU'RE READING THIS), I wouldn't be in that position.
  18. Assuming I get into one of the Ph.D. programs I applied to, yeah, I'll be skipping my master's. Figured it'll take the same amount of time and I'll be getting more money that way. Cut out the middle-man I guess. It seems like getting your master's first is the road less traveled by in history nowadays.
  19. Basketball, golf and vodka. Good combo? Great combo.
  20. I had a phone interview today where we talked about basketball and his cats. So I mean, just go with the flow is all I can tell you.
  21. Multumesc foarte mult.
  22. I lol'd pretty hard at that.
  23. Yum, vodka. I <3 everybody!
  24. Talked to Dr. Johnson today. He said the committee at Central Michigan would have its first meeting this week and that he would let me know what happened as soon as he could...he said he'd put in a good word for me...
