  1. Hello! I'm not an international student, but I am joining UCSD PhD program in the fall.
  2. Hello, I was recently accepted as a PhD candidate at UCSD with the NSF GRFP. I'm not exactly sure I'm reading everything properly, but UCSD sent out the following email to all incoming grad students Other NSF recipients I've spoken to says that doesn't apply to them, while others says it does. Can anyone provide any insight into whether or not I have TA, and if I do, do I have to do it to the amount required of everyone else? I assume it has something to do with 1. repaying the funding the department usually gives all PhD candidates and 2. getting teaching experience. But since I wont need departmental funding (for three years at least) I'm just confused about #1. Thanks!
  3. Oh my god I want to fill out a housing application. What do I do ?!
  4. Thats great! When are you moving out to San Diego? I'd like to go visit the area pretty soon to start apartment shopping.
  5. I've actually chosen the bioengineering PhD at UCSD and am VERY excited that I get to specialize in bioinformatics as well. I've spoken to the grad coordinator for both majors and am working on it right now. It seems great!!
  6. Congrats! I'm going there for BioEngineering myself.
  7. Hello all, I don't want to come off as unappreciative or greedy, so please try to be as understanding as possible while reading. I recently had enough luck to be awarded an NSF fellowship and will be moving to San Diego, Cali from Miami, Florida with my fiancée. Now, she has been looking for a while but is having trouble finding a job out in SD so my fellowship will have to sustain us both. This would normally not be a problem, except that I have to move across country, pay expensive rent in La Jolla, buy texbooks, a computer etc. With that in mind, I'm wondering if there are any fellowships that you know of that can work with the NSF and provide me with extra money for books, computer, etc. Similar to the research stipend offered by the DOE csgf. Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated!
  8. Hello, If you got into the bioengineering department, under the school of engineering, is it possible to transfer to the bioinformatics department, also under the school of engineering? More generally, is it possible to transfer between departments in your school if you they are similar in research and faculty but differ in course work an ultimate faculty, and you have the NSF fellowship (meaning departmental funding isn't an issue, at least not at first)? Thanks!

I emailed them and they said by "mid April" we will know whether or not we're waitlisted, accepted or rejected. As in they won't sent out waves and keep people in limbo. The first email will tell you your status.
  10. Hello all, I have a question about the terms of the fellowship. I see that there is a 10,500 cost-of-education that they pay to the schools, but that the schools themselves must cover the rest of the costs if there are any. Does this mean that if my school has 14,000 a year in tutiotion and fees that the school will be responsible for the rest and I wont have to pay anything? Or will I have to pay it out of the 30k a year stipend? Thanks for the help
  11. Oh ok so if I don't get an email today I'm a top tier HM that might get it...hopefully today is the last day of waiting for everyone but I'd rather find out in 2 weeks I got it or an HM than finding out today I didnt get it lol
  12. So just to double check, If you get an email tonight you either got it or didn't get it. If you don't get one it's because you'll either get one later when they know they will have more money, or because you're an HM?

  14. Hey everyone! Any other bioengineering students out there that will be joining this year?!
