  1. anyone else have a midterm due tomorrow? that's only 70% done?
  2. I have a written midterm due 9:30AM tomorrow that I'm still working on and only 75% done with. Now I'm just going to be distracted by the decision. FML.
  3. It's my spring break, too. I have a lot of things to do. A midterm exam that's due Friday, papers I need to grade, lectures I need to have completed by Monday, an exam I need to construct for my students. Having a hard time focusing with this looming over my head. My exam has a research proposal component; maybe I'll just propose a project where I find out what's happening to me.
  4. I read my essay recently, and I found a typo in my proposed research one. I really just want to know soon!!
  5. I applied last year, but didn't make it to the 3rd reviewer. I applied again this year and am hoping I make it. Last year I was so anxious for the results, but this year I was more casual, busy, and I totally forgot for a little while that this was coming up. I'm a 2nd year student, so this is my last chance. Good luck to all. Just trying to send some positive vibes into the universe.
  6. No award or HM for me. This really sucks; I was always dreaming of what it would be like to get the fellowship. I'm disappointed but am slowly realizing that life is still the same, which is completely OK. I'm in my first year of a great PhD program, and I'm definitely applying again next year
  7. I remember seeing a powerpoint where it said the # of awards given out in each subject area was proportional to the # of applications they got. So if 20% of the total # of applications were in engineering, 20% of the total # of awards would be in engineering. I can't find the source, so take this with a grain of salt. It makes sense given the NSF's repuation for equality; this process ensures no subject area is under/overrepresented.
  8. ^^ Here's hoping it's just a week!
  9. The graph looks curvilinear more than anything. I don't think a general linear regression is quite appropriate :-/
  10. Here are some extra data points! 2008 - March 31 2007 - March 26 2006 - March 30 2005 - April 9
  11. I'm in my first year of grad school right now and didn't even THINK about applying to any fellowships last year. I wish I had. Fingers crossed we get it!
  12. ^ Yeah, I'm dreading that experience. It seems that that website and this one go down in flames. I'll bring some gasoline
  13. No, but my lab mate was accepted and will be attending the program next fall. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
  14. CUNY Baruch already had their visitation day...
  15. Hopefully this will be an amazing St. Patty's weekend. Drunk because I'm happy > Drunk because I'm sad
  16. The NSF GRFP isn't available to MS students. And the chances of getting it is definitely less than 20%.
  17. I got a 6 for the writing section when I took the GRE in 8/2010, and this was the strategy I used. The issue essay involves taking a stance on something, so I can see how you see it as an argument. Unless the topic is really controversial (which it shouldn't be), ALWAYS take a QUALIFIED approach. Discuss both the pros and cons of the issue, and then take a side while ALSO CONSIDERING THE OTHER POINT. My essay prompt asked me if public schools should have required school uniforms. I described pros (looks professional, less chance of getting in trouble for indecency) and cons (limits self expression, students can't afford it) and ultimately sided with not having uniforms. The argument essay prompt contains an error in logic in EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE of it. My prompt described a woman who was running for mayor, and some dude was arguing to a newspaper editor why she was the best candidate because she did x, y, and z. I wrote an essay where I pointed out that the man didn't even mention any other candidates so the woman he liked couldn't logically be the "best" candidate without any competition, how past success doesn't indicate future success, how x, y, and z had nothing to do with being a good mayor, etc.
  18. Some insight to the process: One of my advisors flew out to DC in January for 4 days to review applications. Each day he spent about 5 hours grading applications (around 20 each day). Then he had a 1 hour break and had to go back to a meeting where every rater in his 5-6 person "group" sat together with the group leader and discussed every application that was rated high (around 50 each day). The groups made no final decisions. Apparently the raters just give the ratings. My advisor has the feeling that his only role was to ID the good applications and weed out the bad ones so that higher level raters could read the good applications and make final decisions.
  19. Question: I'm a first year PhD and made less than 12,000. Is it advisable to file independently or as a dependent of my parents? We don't itemize anything, and we are trying to get the most out of the credits for lifetime education. We haven't owed any taxes ever.
  20. Hey guys. Figured we could use this thread to ask tax related questions for us to figure out our RA and TA money.
  21. I took the old test in August 2010, and I practiced a lot for the GRE. I got a 790 (91st percentile). I checked my stats using the GRE question checker (do this online when you get your grades! It tells you which questions you got right/wrong after you take the GRE). I got every question right until the last 3 where I got all 3 of the last ones wrong. The questions were: -Equation of a circle (did not study this at all) -Reading a bar graph where there were NO numbers. It involved having to figure out which percentiles each level of the IV was in. -A weird probability question where a teacher was picking names out of a hat and there was a probability of 1/6 that the name contained 3 vowels and I had to pick the most likely name that got picked out of the hat. I only remember Harry, Lynette, and Carlos, but the issue for me was that it was the last question and I had to fucking count all the damn vowels. Harry has 1 vowel and Lynette has 2 vowels, so I had/still have no idea how to answer that question.
  22. Does anyone know how the spots are allocated by subject? Do certain areas have quotas or is it really just who has the best ratings and they happen to be in whatever subject they are in?
