  1. I'm so sorry to hear that! Yeah, it was a kick in the gut for me as I really liked the program and the people, I had started to think about where I would rent a place in Tucson, and all the desert hikes I would go on etc... blah! Wait-list isn't a rejection, though! I had talked to two clinical people at the airport when we left and neither one of them thought they would take the offer if their other applications panned out. If that sample is any indication, there may be a descent chance that you'll get an admit yet! I'm cheering for you! Have you gotten word on any other apps yet?
  2. There's a professor at my undergrad institution who is very well known in this field: http://www.uwosh.edu/psychology/rauscher.htm We have a master's program that, while not prestigious or anything, is a really solid program. She is very personable, so I would recommend contacting her as I'm sure she would be more than happy to offer some advice.
  3. I got an email from my POI last night. Yeah, I'm bummed, but the acceptance I got may be a better fit after all (and is actually still in the Southwest and on the border, so I can still pursue my same research interests regarding immigration issues)... My POI at UA was very nice about it and said that I should contact him any time for advice on where to go or with questions as my studies progress. Considering his notoriety in the field, it seems that he's a very good person to know. I just saw a wait-list for the clinical program at UA posted in the results section. Was that you, bamba?
  4. Just found out today that I didn't make the final cut for the social program. Oh well, their loss! I thought I was a great fit for their program, and I'm sure in other years I would have had an admit, but I'm at peace with it. Best of luck to those still waiting! Oddly, about three hours after getting an email of rejection from my POI at UA, I got an acceptance with a VERY generous funding offer from a university that I kinda forgot about while obsessing about UA. I had one drink for sorrow and about five more in celebration... so overall, a good day!
  5. Personally, I'd take it, especially if you really are set on that university. I would tell him that you'd love to work on his research but that you also want to work on X, Y, and Z and want to make sure that you'd be able to pursue that as well, on your own time or with other profs...
  6. UA was my only interview. I also got waitlisted at Kansas (KU). I also applied to UT-El Paso, Florida State, and Brock University (in Ontario). I'm pretty sure I'm either wait-listed or rejected from FSU. I don't think that El Paso or Brock do interviews, so I'm just waiting to hear from those two. Still no word back from UA, hopefully today is the day!
  7. Yeah, it was my top choice before the interview, and even more so post-interview. I interviewed with John Allen and Dave Sbarra in the clinical area as they do some collaborative work with the social students. They were such cool guys. That place is so chill, yet so productive... it really fits the way I like work. Best of luck!
  8. Yeah, it's making me nervous. My POI and my student hosts all said that decisions would be made in a week or two. It's going on week three.. argh! My hope is that they are putting together funding packages for all us admitted folks, and that's what has been holding it up!
  9. Ha! I spent much of my interview insulting the state... well, at least the crazy politics of the state because it deals directly with some of my research. I think I laid that out pretty well in my SOP, and that it was one of the major factors in me getting an interview. The faculty was all in agreement with me, though, so it seems that I played the "insult the state" card pretty well
  10. I was there for the interview weekend for the social program and I haven't heard anything back yet either. I know that one social applicant posted a rejection post-interview. Best of luck, we may end up in the same cohort!
  11. I just got wait-listed at KU. Letter said they had offered admission to nine applicants. I wonder how many are waitlisted. I saw a few peeps with admission offers for KU. To anyone who got an admit, are you planning on taking it, or are you holding out for another offer? I interviewed at Tucson last weekend. Really hoping to hear back from them soon!
  12. I didn't post that, but I do know that they did their interview weekend last weekend. I heard that they will not be accepting anyone who didn't interview.
  13. I will echo HyacinthMccaw. It's all about fit. Top programs may admit 2-5% of applicants, and you can be assured that no matter how awesome you are, there are people with much more experience than you, much better grades, a much better GRE etc... Many of those people get rejected. I had one of my current advisors explain to me that unless you are in the department and know exactly what they are looking for in an applicant at any given time, your acceptance is largely due to luck. Perhaps, say, I mentioned one thing in my SOP as a future research endeavor. By just that interest and a faculty member who is also interested in that one area (which may just be a thought in their head, and not anything that you would know about based on your research of that faculty member), that could lead to an interview more so than an applicant who has extensively studied in the field that their POI is a major player in. I think one's best bet in searching out POIs is to not only have an interest in what a professor HAS done, but to also know what their future plans are so you can see if your interests down the road will align with the direction that they are taking their studies down the road. Of course, you have to show that you've done research, and that you like it and want to continue as a researcher, but there is absolutely no necessary amount of research that you must have conducted to be considered in any program.
  14. awesome! Are you interviewing in the psych department in the neural/cog area, or through the interdisciplinary neuroscience program?
  15. Mine uses refillable cartridges, so I just buy the e-liquid separately. It comes in a little 20ml bottle that you use to fill the cartridges with. The nicotine is at a consistent concentration, but you can buy different concentrations (to ween down on nicotine if you're trying to quite, I suppose) It saves some $ compared to pre-filled cartridges. Yeah, the interview is in Tucson next week, so I assume that it will be reasonably warm... I never realized that the smell clings when it's cold.. interesting.
  16. Yeah, I had considered that, and may bring one, but I have a feeling that the airline might just toss a suspicious looking liquid in a bottle that only says "18mg". Maybe I'll bring some nicorette gum. I'm fine if I have to go a few hours. I would not be fine going more than 6-8 hours, or if the grad student I'm staying with would be weird about it or anything like that... that could turn into an awkward situation...
  17. I'm wondering if it will be an issue that I smoke during the interview weekend. Yes, I know it's a filthy, disgusting, horrible habit, and that I'm a horrible person blah blah blah... I hope to quit at some point, but the interview weekend probably isn't the best time to undertake such an endeavor. I am the most respectful smoker I know; I never smoke around nonsmokers, never litter cigarette butts, etc. But, I am wondering what the attitude is towards potential grad school students who smoke. I will be in Arizona for three days and while I am planning on only having a few cigs a day, that urge is going to take over and I am going to have to go have a cig from time to time. Any thoughts on this subject?
  18. On their sheet that you check off three people who you would want to work with, I did include Hafer; however, if I attended there, I am most interested in working with Hodson. He's been putting out some real cool research and his current students are getting published quite regularly in the top journals.
  19. I just saw a result posted today for U of Kansas. Anyone else hear anything from them?
  20. I don't know if this has been posted here before, but I thought it was a nifty little tool, regardless of how flawed it may be: http://www.cs.utep.edu/admissions/index.html And here's a link to the article that explains the design: http://digitalcommons.utep.edu/cs_techrep/315/
  21. Yeah, this seems like a good option. Schools have to expect that with the cut-throat competition to their programs, that students are applying out to many different places and that these issues may arise. I think being straight up honest about it would not bother either place. To me, it would show a level of integrity that I would expect in serious applicants. Saying that you have a conflicting schedule may come back to bite you because, after all, academia is a small world. If you ditched on one previously made obligation to go to a different interview, both schools may end up finding that out and may then question your fit with the principles of their program.
  22. As I had said in personal conversation, I think with social psych, perhaps more than other domains, it is so much more about that mysterious "fit" than anything else.
  23. Thanks, Lab-rat! Yeah, I really think it's all about that ever mysterious concept of "fit" more than any other type of credentials.
