Since I am not from the region, I'm not sure --> would you say that NYU or Georgetown is more reputable/highly known out east?

i got my official acceptance letter from the dean at georgetown yesterday. i assume since there was no mention of funding, i was not awarded anything...but i have an april 15 deadline to accept. am i reading too far into this? has anyone heard about funding from GT? good luck to all

Was the MA at NYU the Latin American Studies program? Any thoughts/advice? I'm trying to decide between NYU/Georgetown for nxt year!

Agreed! I'm so torn between NYU/GT at this point. Looks like no funding at either. My boyfriend will be at NYU this fall, which is making it hard to be objective in making my decision...eek!

i got accepted at GW last week, they said they would notify about funding by the end of this coming week...still waiting to hear on Gtown's funding situation. Fingers crossed.

My undergrad department has a fund that reimbursed me for my GRE expenses... Between score reports, transcripts, and applications for 7 schools (one school had a fee waiver), it was around $800

Good to know about the 30K benchmark, ZeChocMoose....Do they actually tell people this or just expect you to read the fine print? Cherylsafina - salaries range from 40-70k, depending on sector of employment. So, as much as I'd love to get on the non-profit track, it's probably not financially realistic knowing that i'd have the burden of repaying student loans. That leaves mostly private and/or government organizations or the PhD track, which several people have noted above as being very competitive for admission and not always funded. I'm strongly leaning toward deferring for a year, saving a LARGE percent of my income, and then - - assuming the outlook is positive - - hopefully only take out half (realistically, probably more than half, but significantly less than i would otherwise) of the amount of $$$$ I would have to if i were to enroll this fall.

I know, it's tough trying to weigh the options, and the deadlines seem so soon! And YESSS....the cost of living factor is difficult to stomach. We'll see. Best of luck to you - Let me know what you decide!!

Thanks for the thoughts! Has anyone had any experience with deferred admission? Or reapplying to the same school in a subsequent application cycle? Just wondering if these would help or hurt my chances for admission and/or funding...

Yes, that amount includes living expenses, it was the university's "estimated cost of attendance." I expect to get a part-time job, but the school is in New York, so I'm not even sure that working part-time could cover my living expenses. Maybe if I were to find a cheap studio outside the city and commute/find roommates. Even so, that leaves me barely breaking even on living expenses and with around 50,000 in tuition debt.

Same problem here. I got accepted at my top choice with no funding. As much as I want to work toward my MA, I'm having a really hard tim justifying 80,000 in loans over the next 1.5-2 yrs....does this warrant a deferral? Perhaps working for a year to save up some $$$$?

I would guess my GRE was too low. I (think I had?) had a pretty solid application otherwise. Most other scholarships I have been able to find through the University are past the deadline (would have applied had I been admitted sooner). I guess my other option at this point is perhaps trying to defer admission for a year and working to save up some money?

I have been accepted at NYU, Denver, and Georgetown. Georgetown has not released funding information yet, but I am not eligible for funding at the other two schools. I'm well aware of the "education is an investment" argument, but is anyone else in this boat?? It's hard to justify 80,000-100,000 in loans for a 1.5-2yr degree. Starting to question whether grad school will be worth it...

So far I've gotten in at NYU and Georgetown, but I will likely end up at NYU...thoughts on housing? the idea of a $1500/mo apt scares me.

I have a 3.9 GPA and an 1180 composite GRE. I am looking at MA programs for Latin American Studies at UT Austin, NYU, Georgetown, etc., but I am worried my GRE score will pull me down. I hope more weight is given to GPA...

I have no idea what schools are looking for. I have a strong GPA and international experience, but I'm worried that my GRE scores will be low or my undergraduate studies may not tie closely enough with my future aspirations. Hope to hear more soon..
