I just hope that one of us (on this forum, or that entitled Anthropology 2011) gets in. The odds are extremely tough, the stakes extremely high. Good luck to all.

Brace yourselves. Stanford just updated their announcement to read, Decision status will be announced via email to each applicant before 4 March 2011.
-
If Stanford anthropology generally requires a Master's degree . . . why in the world wouldn't they mention that?! Jeez.
-
Application anxiety-induced academic paralysis.
-
Wow. I can't believe Stanford blew their own deadline (for which they posted a huge red announcement). Sheesh.
-
Hey . . . we all know that deadlines aren't really ALL that important in academia anyway . . .
-
Yeah . . . wow, Stanford anthropology has strange policies. I could hardly get anyone to talk to me. I sent out five emails to professors in the department (before I applied) and only received one, curt reply saying that I should apply. Funny how different schools seem to have their own, coordinated response strategies. I'm sure they'll send out a storm of rejection letters soon though.

Thanks Ivanov, at this point I would pay good money to get any information about Stanford. I'm not too hopeful, though, for two reasons: a.) Because of that post about an acceptance being given following an interview--of course I was involved in no such interview, and b.) Because of their ridiculously low admittance rate (e.g. the Modern Thought and Literature program accepted 2 out of 164 applicants; ouch . . . 162 people REJECTED!!!) sheesh . . . anyways . . . let us know if you hear any little peep. Cheers.

Does anyone know details about the fellows abroad program for the GRFP? I read the official program solicitation, and it alludes to Fellows being allowed to study at foreign universities during their GRFP tenure - through an "affiliated U.S. institution". I'm wondering if it's possible to avoid the "only tenable at U.S. institutions" part of the fellowship and end up getting a degree at, say, Oxford or Cambridge.

I applied to the MRes, which leads to the DPhil. Hope to hear soon. The CAMSIS system is temporarily down; maybe they're updating our accounts??? Hahaha . . . can't stop this guessing game.
-
Anyone else apply to Cambridge?
-
Did you know that University of York (in England) offers a Master's in Nautical Archaeology? I've heard that the total cost is around 40K for the program (including room and board) and they have rolling admissions deadlines - so it's not to late to apply.
-
Just saw that Cornell gave out an acceptance (Ph.D. in archaeology). Man oh man; bracing for news.

P.S. My wife also has family in London, so we both would LOVE to go to England.
-
The other thing is that my wife doesn't want to live in Seattle for 5 or 6 years. These things play a big role when you're married; in other words, I applied to appropriate schools in locations that are appealing to her. I will go to Oxford if I happen to land a scholarship, or if some kindly philanthropist decides to give me $200,000. Hey - it could happen!!!

Oh Jeez . . . Stanford said that we won't hear until mid-March? What a headache. I have no idea about the programs at Yale or Harvard. I decided to apply to schools (or not) based solely on the presence (or lack thereof) of professors who are interested in Northwest Coast Natives, or at least indigenous Arctic peoples. You'd be surprised (or at least I was) to find out how very few programs have professors who are familiar with that region. Of course, schools in the Northwest (i.e. U of Oregon, Portland State, U of Washington) have specialists in these fields, but I was hoping to get into a more highly ranked school to improve my employability chances following graduation. I did apply to UBC in Vancouver, which is beautiful.

Wow! Congrats! Hahaha. Who knew - that is such an obscure topic. Should be a great read, though, when you're finished.

Oh man - your story about Brown is mine too. I had great email communications with three professors out there and a half hour phone call with one of them. They were very excited and even said that they would try to get me in. Ouch. Very disappointing!
-
Sociocultural Anthropology for sure, but I hope to research indigenous museums (mainly NW Coast) - diagram the issues involved . . . pitfalls, negative and positive social and economic impacts . . . as well as the process of using the museum for cultural activities and (at the same time) using it as a venue to present their culture to the outside world. Getting accepted to Oxford is fantastic and exciting, but meaningless unless funding comes my way. Fingers tightly intertwined.

I don't really expect to receive an acceptance from Stanford. My attempts to contact the professors out there yielded few responses. Out of four professors (emailed at least three times each) I only got two short responses saying to apply.

I'm at UCSB right now (finishing undergrad) in the Anthropology Department. The Ev. Psych. program seems to be pretty awesome . . . heavy hitters in the field such as Steven Gaulin (fantastic professor), Cosmides and Tooby. Congratulations!

So far not a peep out of the anthropology department at Brown. They're closed up tighter than the Vatican Conclave. Anxiously awaiting the plume of white smoke.
