I won a GRFP fellowship on my second go-around. It has really been a game changer for me . . . and although I sometimes forget about the prestige factor, most times I mention it to a professor they react by highlighting how prestigious that award is. Hopefully (a few years down the road) a hiring committee will still view it that way. Mostly it just feels good to have your research validated, and feel like you're part of a larger community of researchers that is making a positive difference in the world.

I am definitely monitoring all channels - so far, radio silence. I expect someone to get a request for official transcripts soon. As someone once said, "I have one egg, one basket."

Also, Grad Cafe usually crashes during that period, with hundreds of users cramming into this forum. Great stuff!

I applied to Modernity and Autochthony. Hopefully that word scared most people off.

In 2011, there were 77 awardees out of 1213 applicants.

Glad you started this thread. This will give us a great place to obsess about our applications while providing an anxiety-filled distraction from our coursework requirements. I hope someone comes along with some statistics about the applicant field. Maybe . . . how many have applied in the past, etc.?

Also, many universities have undergraduate journals - mostly associated with an undergrad anthropology society. I've started two of these (journals) myself, and it's pretty easy to get a paper published . . . sometimes they're dying for submissions. Although you may think that these types of journals are not serious enough, it's definitely a publication that you can put on your CV . . . and that looks really good when you're applying to grad school.

Originally I won a Graduate Division Fellowship (at my university) for one year. When they found out I won the NSF GRFP, they boosted my first year fellowship by $2000 and guaranteed me a second year of funding through TAships (this is their standard operating procedure for NSF Fellows, designed to entice students to attend). So, including the three tenure years with NSF, I ended up with a five year funding package. So sweet.

Hello again kphd, I don't know about odds, but it's true that the level of competition is crazy high right now. Hopefully you'll get an offer. Any fellowship would be fantastic (even if you have to eat Top Ramen for a few years). Even if you don't win a fellowship, but get accepted, you'll be able to fund your program through TAships, which (I think) pay roughly the same as a fellowship, except you have to work for it. Overall, I'd say that in this climate of limited spots and massive amounts of competition . . . any acceptance with a way to pay for it should be viewed as a huge compliment and seriously considered. Good luck!

I'm attending the program right now, if you have any more questions!

Hi there Whirledpeas, I was fortunate enough to win a NSF GRF last year for cultural anthropology. I'd be happy to help you in any way I can . . . if you'd like to Private Message me. Cheers.

I think you can, if you can prove that you'll be engaged in either research of coursework (you'll have to have your advisor and your university's Coordinating Officer sign off).
-
I think you're misinterpreting the language here. It is saying that you may start receiving NSF funding as early as this Summer or Fall. I am declaring my first year as a Reserve year, in order to take advantage of a university fellowship. My Coordinating Officer (at my home institution) has already confirmed that this is allowed.

VG/VG E/E VG/E Second try, got award this time. Like others have said, my reviewer comments from last year were invaluable - as I made big adjustments to my essays based upon their feedback.

I too received nothing last year, but got an award this year (I graduated with my B.A. last June and will be attending my first year of grad school this Fall). My reviewer comments last year really helped, in that I made major adjustments to my essays based upon them.

To kill some time. Make sure the sound is on. http://www.maniacwor...m/maze_game.htm It only gets good when you reach the fifth maze.

Is there an alternate chat site (because of the impending crash of The Grad Cafe)? Anyone? I know nothing of these matters.
-
Yeah, who's the anonymous user? Shady.

Xavi6 - Anthropology (cultural) student here!

I remember last year - it took me 10 to 15 minutes (of constant retrying) to pull up the results list on Fastlane once they were posted - because of the massive bombardment by applicants . . . all the while people were posting acceptances, etc. on this thread. Madness.

More Fellowships this year? From the NSF Fiscal Year 2011 Budget request to Congress: "The Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program, (16 percent increase to $158.2 million); an Administration priority, supports the development of the Nation’s future scientists and engineers. FY 2009 marked the beginning of a growth trajectory to triple the number of new awards made each year to 3,000 by FY 2013." http://www.nsf.gov/a...view_fy2011.pdf (Overview Page 3)
