Well, I am at CUNY now and if I will go here then I will continue working with my current mentor. I would feel bad on leaving after obtaining MS after he would spend his money to fund me:P That's good news that I can defer loans. Does anyone know if profs at USC accept MS students into their labs? No point of going there to just take classes;p

I am worried about not being able to go to a PhD after USC - not sure how I would manage to pay off a loan and attend PhD at the same time:) I am waiting - hoping for the best:P

If I go to USC I will apply to PhD programs again once I am done - the problem may be a loan. PhD is my goal.

I know there is decision topic but I am not sure if many cs people look there:P I am trying to decide what to do and I need some advice. I have an acceptance from CUNY Graduate Center Phd (probably fully funded) USC (masters - no financial aid - except perhaps one semester tuition - hence I would have to take a loan) The field is computer vision. My goal is to do research in academia. What would be a wise choice? I know there is still time but I wanted to ponder this now:P

They don't do it - but if you go on website of professors they usually put their phd students there somewhere. If you then go to the student's website - he/she often has a link to his/her CV there - you can see when they started grad school and then look what they achieved by that time:) I don't want to post specific links since that person may not want it but it's not hard to find

Did anyone here get rejected from WUSTL? I saw some people got accepted through website but my status did not change. I am worried now:\ Wonder if they just sent acceptances and are preparing rejections now:P Also, how are students notified about status for Boston University - is it by postal mail or email or phone?

I think it is a bad idea - they want people who are 100% sure they know they want phd. But there is an option to select if you want your app to be moved to masters admissions. You can call people to ask if it's done automatically - some schools require two apps, some dont.

I want to go straight to PhD but I applied to one masters program as a backup - just in case I receive all rejections:P Even though profs don't usually fund masters students, it is possible to impress them and convince them to take you as a phd student - I heard of some people who started as masters and transferred to phd program before completing MS. The bad thing is that one may need to take a loan for masters. I think 4.0 gpa from masters without any research will not be an advantage - MS would increase chances of acceptance into phd if one had no publications in undergrad and then went to MS and succeeded in publishing.

I didn't apply to CMU - I got tired (and ran out of money;p ) after working on my 16 applications. My top choice is UMich so I've been really nervous this week hoping to receive a decision but no decision came ugg:P I hate weekends:D I applied to Seattle too. I emailed them last week (4 days ago) to update my fall 2008 grades and to send scanned transcript. They said they are nearing the end of application process. I guess the decision for my app was not made then (I don't see a reason why they would waste their time to update the info if I was already rejected). It is possible that they finalized their decisions since that time since some people got accepted already.

My profile could be much better but can't do anything about it now;PP Graduating in 2009 with an undergraduate degree (without masters) from CUNY:CCNY, double major in CS and math, gpa 3.5 overall (~3.8 in cs). GRE: 440V (I am not a native speaker - came to usa in summer of 2002 so my vocabulary sucks;P), 750M, 4.5 AWA. No publications yet (only listed in acknowledgment section in one paper) but few research projects (REU at another univ., work with mentor at my school (funded by graduate fellowship at my school as a preparation for a career in research/college teaching), in total ~2 yrs of research experience), one may result in a paper this year. I applied to 15 PhD programs (perhaps 16 but some documents are still missing for one school) and 1 masters. So far accepted to the masters program, and rejected to one Phd program. Hopefully I will get in somewhere - it would really suck to get 15 rejections
