  1. Washington University in St. Louis school of medicine has a very good bioinformatics program. I did a summer internship there.
  2. This is an interesting predicament (albeit a good one to be in, congrats on getting into your top school!). I would think that since this is your life, you have the option of doing that. I have to think that the other school would understand why you left them. You should be very kind in your email to them, explaining what happened, explaining why your top choice is a better fit for you, etc. Also, tell your top choice about your predicament, maybe they would have some advice.
  3. I emailed the assistant chair, and he said that I was accepted but that I was not on the first list for funding. I'm pretty disappointed, I was really excited about CSU. I emailed him to ask what the shortcomings in my application where, and he said, very emphatically, that I didn't have any shortcomings, but rather that the state budget had shortcomings. This made me feel better, knowing that I would have likely gotten funding if we were in better economic times. I thought my application was pretty strong: 770Q, 530V, 5.0AW, 3.75 GPA (magna cum laude), math/bio double major, 2 summers of research in molecular bio and bioinformatics, and good letters of reference. I have a special interest in applications of statistics to biology, yada yada yada, and CSU would be a great fit for me. He said that anything could happen within the next couple of weeks, and that I should stay in contact, as funding could become available. I think that they will send out admission offers sometime early next week, after the April 1st deadline for applying without funding. Anyhow, good luck to you, and I hope you get in and get funded!
  4. Has anyone heard from Colorado State University? I emailed the chair of the department more than 2 weeks ago, and said that I could expect to hear back from them in 2 weeks, and I've still not heard anything. Has anyone else tried to contact the department?
  5. I got into Kentucky in December, fully funded.
  6. I'm from Seattle, didn't go to UW (although I could have, and at times think that I should have), but I'd have to think that the location for UW is better than that for CUNY, but I might be a little biased. UW has a very strong reputation for math, and it's a hard program to get in to. A lot of people who go through UW tend to want to stay in the northwest academic positions, so competition can be a little stiff out here. I've also heard that the grad stipend at UW is not very much compared to other places. Seattle is an expensive place to live, so that's something to consider. Good luck with your choices.
  7. I'm not holding my breath. People have been accepted into Purdue's program recently, too.
  8. Haven't heard from Purdue or Davis either. Look it up in the results section.
  9. Sorry, I was mistaken. You are correct. When I was looking for graduate schools to apply to, I was looking for programs that funded their master's students, and I know that CSU does this (I have called and emailed them about this). I automatically bunched them with Kentucky and Oregon State, who I KNOW require a master's before the PhD. In any case, I applied for the master's but stated that my overall goal was a PhD in my personal statement.
  10. I don't know for all cases. However, for instance, my statistics professor said that her dissertation largely consisted of writing and modifying an R script. I'd think it would depend on what kind of program you were in. A more theory based program would have you proving theorems and what not while a more applied program might have you writing scripts. I don't know this for sure, it's speculation on my part.
  11. : ( If that's the case, you'd think they'd at least send us a nice rejection email. My application was fairly strong, but I come from a small school, which may have provided a disadvantage: Mathematics and Biology double major 770Q, 530V, 5.0AW on the GRE 3.74 GPA (3.70 Math GPA, 3.73 Biology GPA) 1 Summer of Molecular Biology Research as part of an Undergraduate Research Program at my school 1 Summer of Bioinformatics/Computational Biology Research at Washington University in St. Louis Medical School. Strong letters of rec. And I expressed an interest in doing statistical work in bioinformatics and computational biology. What about everyone else?
  12. It depends on the school, I'd say. Some schools (University of Kentucky, Colorado State, Oregon State to name a few) explicitly state on their application websites that if you don't already have an M.S. in stats, that you should NOT apply directly into their PhD program, even if you're ultimately interested in a PhD. Upon successful completion of the master's degree, they may invite you to do PhD studies. Other schools, however, will tell you to apply directly to the PhD if your ultimate goal is a PhD. I've often read that an M.S. in stats is the industry standard for those wanting to be industry statisticians. Obviously, if you want to work in academia then a PhD is the way to go. There are plenty of non-academic statistician jobs that require (or at least prefer) a PhD, too.
  13. M.S./Ph.D Statistics F2011

Applied: Oregon State, Colorado State, UC Davis, Kentucky, Purdue, Carnegie Mellon

    Admitted: Kentucky (fully funded)

    Rejected:

  14. I've seen on the results section that several people have heard back from CMU's statistics department. There were several acceptances and a wait-list. Some people heard back as early as 1/26/2011. When I completed my application (back in November), they sent me an email saying that my application was complete that I could expect to hear back from them no later than January 30th, 2011, aka TODAY! I find it odd that I haven't received an email with a decision yet, and that the day by which they would notify all applicants was a Sunday. Does anyone else have this problem?
