Elliott School (GWU) Fall 2011
curiouslyidling replied to apsuwa's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Also in for Security Policy Studies!! Was not expecting that at ALL when I checked my email.. I have them written down on my calendar for March 19th! I did the same thing. I only read the part that said "The decision on your application..." before I went and checked the website. Luckily, there are people here who read all the way through -
International Relations Fall 2011 admission decisions
curiouslyidling replied to SGMGE's topic in The Lobby
As far as I can tell from the results board, they usually notify in late March. Last year, most of Elliott's decisions came out around the 19th, and most of the MSFS decisions came out around the 22nd. Not sure about the other two programs (as I didn't apply there) but the results board is usually a good place to check out old results. -
Anyone hear back from GSPIA

I applied to the MPIA for Security and Intelligence studies. Maybe the MPIA and MPA have different committees? Good luck! -
What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
curiouslyidling replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I just got my first acceptance, and I was so excited to finally be able to post in this thread! I'm at work.. oops.. but I was really in the zone and doing everything I'm supposed to be doing when I decided to just check if I had any new emails. Sure enough, the little (1) was there in my gmail tab, and when I opened it up, it said "GSPIA Admissions Decision Available".. my admissions decision was available on the website! My heart started pounding out of my chest and I somehow accidently closed every single browser I had open, so I had to reopen them all, which was annoying. Managed to find my log-in and everything, and read my admissions decision! I read the first three lines probably 6 times, then I calmly got up, found my key card, and went down two floors to tell my husband (we work for the same company). Went out to the corner store to get some celebratory chocolate, and then I went and called my mom. Now I'm supposed to be working again.. but instead I've just been sending out text messages to my friends letting them know, and they're all super-excited too! Yay!! -

Anyone hear back from GSPIA
curiouslyidling replied to Matthew Gemberling's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I applied for GSPIA's MPIA program for Security & Intelligence studies and haven't heard anything back yet. The acceptances listed on the results page seem to be all over the place, so I have no idea when to expect any news (unlike GW and Georgetown, which seemed to send out notifications all on the same day). -
post here if one of your programs has started contacting...
curiouslyidling replied to frankdux's topic in Waiting it Out
Just looked at the results page and saw that one of my programs (the exact department too! not just some other department within the school!) just sent out an acceptance. Before, I swore up and down that wouldn't freak me out, but my heart dropped into my stomach and the nerves are kicking in (for what? it's not like i can do anything about the decision now!). My logical self has disappeared. -
Hmm.. I'm not even sure I can remember all of mine! I came in as a History, German and Philosophy major (I think?). Dropped German and History almost instantly. Switched to Criminal Justice; demoted Philosophy down to a minor. Spent one semester my junior year as a Pre-Business major, another as an International Affairs attempt (didn't work - all IA classes were full). Switched back to Criminal Justice. Graduated with a Criminal Justice degree and a Philosophy minor - all in 4 years somehow. I did a little bit of everything. It seems to have all worked out in the end - I wouldn't have the necessary economics pre-reqs for some Master's IA programs if I hadn't been pre-business that one semester!

It's a mix between a chihuahua and a dachschund (weenie dog!). My husband prefers chihuaschunds, but I think that isn't as fun as chi-weenie.
-
These are my two chi-weenies, Ella (on the left) and Sam. Yes, if you flip their names around, it sounds like salmonella - that was only kind of on purpose. They're super-adorable, especially when they fall asleep on you.

If the LOR thing is really getting to you, I would recommend emailing the admissions departments of those two schools and asking to have the request re-sent. I had one writer not submit any LOR's by the deadline, and they don't seem to have held it against me. I also had one professor who never received the request from the other school, so his is still missing (though I had them resend a request to him today). In general the programs have been very accomodating. Granted, you haven't mentioned how long ago your applications were submitted - all my application deadlines were either January 15 or Feb. 1st, so it's fairly recent - but they should still understand that it wasn't your fault. Good luck!

I'm definitely doing that. I even have some apartments already picked out based on what school I get into.. though this isn't really anything new for me. I have a strange habit of just looking up real estate in random cities (like the top homes on realtor.com). Maybe I should have gone into real estate?

How much did this process cost everybody?
curiouslyidling replied to ElectedSilence's topic in Applications
5 Schools - $627 total Application Fees - $345 (one school was $100, the rest were lower) GRE and sending scores - $200 (I think - can't really remember how much it cost to send additional scores) Transcripts - $12 for 6 transcripts (1 for me!) Travel - $60 in gas to attend an APSIA Grad School Fair. Not too bad. No worse than I was expecting. -
MPP/MPA 2011 Applicants

Program Applied To (MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): IR - Security Studies Schools Applied To: Georgetown (SSP), George Washington (MA Security and Intelligence Studies), GSPIA (MPIA Security and Intelligence Studies), Denver (MA International Security), IWP (MA Strategic Intelligence Studies) Schools Admitted To: Schools Rejected From: Still Waiting: All Undergraduate institution: Top 20 Public University Undergraduate GPA: 3.61/3.9 major Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): n/a Undergraduate Major: Criminal Justice w/ Philosophy Minor GRE Quantitative Score: 710 GRE Verbal Score: 690 GRE AW Score: 4.5 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2 Years of Work Experience: none, really - 1/2 if you count my internship Describe Relevant Work Experience: completed internship my senior year of college with intelligence unit of a federal agency. very relevant to my future goals. Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I honestly have no idea. My husband thinks they are great, I go back and forth between thinking they are great and thinking they are absolute crap. Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): Should be very strong. One is from my mentor during my internship, and she is a great reference. The other two were professors who really like me, and whose classes I actively sought out during undergrad. They were all excited to write a LOR for me, so hopefully that excitement came across in their letters. Other: Lots of leadership experience and academic honors during undergrad. Very strong sense of purpose. Hopefully that's enough. -
I have several of the same questions - I was planning on sending them thank you cards now, as the last of my applications have been submitted and granted that I get in, I won't be asking for any more letters. I was also thinking about including a gift card to a local coffee shop for my two professors, and maybe something a little more personal for my old internship mentor.
