  1. Hi Friends, I'm starting to research PhD programs in Education, specifically programs in English Education (Curriculum and Instruction, Language and Literacy, Teaching of English, etc.). I'm considering throwing in my hate in a year or two, but I'm curious for those of you applying, accepted, or students in Teaching of English-themed PhD programs - how have you/do you/did you prepare for this beyond teaching? My background info- I have a master's in teaching and 3-4 years of teaching experience, depending on how you count it, though I'd have probably 5-6 by the time I applied/enrolled. I've presented at 2 conferences in a different, but related discipline, but don't have any publications. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
  2. Hi all, I'll be applying to English programs next year. This spring, I have the opportunity to teach a college English course at a 4 year university. However, I'm also presenting a paper at a national conference. I've never taught at the college level or presented at a conference before (and, as of yet, have no peer-reviewed publications). Due to time overlap between the conference and the class, along with some other complicating factors, I'll only be able to do one or the other. For grad schools apps, does anyone have an idea which would look better? I'd love to do both and am torn. I'm looking for something to tip the balance in one direction or the other.
  3. Hey JCoe, I haven't totally decided where I'm applying yet and I'm actually not even applying this year- just collecting information and preparing for next year. The way I'm looking is based on location, professors, program culture, and research strengths. I'm sure funding will eventually play into a decision, if I get to make one. Since I'm so early in the process, I haven't talked to my advisors about specific schools. I've only talked with them about things like teaching classes, potential publications, etc. I've emailed some faculty at other programs and the responses have been mixed. Some have been very friendly and written long helpful emails, others not responding at all, some with just short replies. In terms of preparedness, I think my situation is a bit different than yours. I've been out of undergrad for 7 years and have been working in education or in school in one way or another for most of that time. I've been told that most programs evaluate relative to age, meaning a senior in college wouldn't be expected to have done as much as someone who already has an MA. In general, I'd suggest checking out every option that you can, both in terms of programs to apply to or other intellectually engaging opportunities you come across. On a side note, Berkeley seems like a fantastic place and they seem to have a couple very cool PhD programs, both in and outside of film studies, but what I've heard about admissions there lines up with what you mentioned. Damn near impossible.
  4. Good luck to everyone starting out their applications. ETA Argentina applicant here. Does anyone know when Competition Stats will be updated? I think the ones up there now are the same stats that have been up for months.
  5. I'm not too familiar with the program, but I was under the impression it was for university faculty.
  6. Hey everyone, I've been spending hours on this forum lately. It's easy to scare yourself silly looking at how competetive the application process is. I'm looking into applying to Media Studies (and related) Ph.D. programs this fall (to begin Fall 2012), but I don't have a good sense of how competetive I actually am. I'm looking at UNC-CH, UT-Austin, Berkeley, UF- English, (Film & Media concentration), VCU- Media Art & Text Any thoughts on my chances of admission- even if they are zero- would be greatly appreciated. Please advise! Undergrad at large, well respected public research university. Major: English, Philosophy, 3.8, Phi Beta Kappa, Fulbright ETA, Colombia 2 MA degrees: 1 in Education (from an Ivy League school), 1 in Media Studies (from a more-or-less no-name school), 4.0 in both 1 publication in academic journal Taught 1 undergrad classes- 1 interdisciplinary but focused mainly on Philosophy/English TA for graduate level Media Theory class, 2 semesters Waiting on GRE scores, expecting ~1450, 6 on writing
  7. Hi everyone, It sounds like a rough game out there. I'm not applying until next year, but I'm starting to do research now. As for me- 3.8 from top 30 undergrad, Philosophy major currently in masters program in Media Studies- combines production and theory, not a top school or very well known (but free) no research or publications, but some experiencing teaching and TAing I'm wondering if it's even worth my time to apply; so many people on this forum are having such a hard time and I haven't found many statistics on admits- I get that it is HARD though. Also, does anyone have advice on how/where to do research or publish? I've done a lot of writing, but right now don't have any channels or very accessible advisers. Good luck to everyone waiting on decisions.
