I know what you mean. You've had an amazing application season, though (I'm pretty pleased with how I've done, too) so there's that. I really want to know how one is a paragraph away from a PhD acceptance. Please do elaborate if you can! -

Thanks for the info, cicada123! That's helpful. I was reading UW posts from previous years and it sounds like there has been speculation in the past that instead of "rounds" of decisions they just kind of work their way through a pile or so at a time until they are done. In other words-- not organized enough to call it rounds. But from what I could tell that was just antsy people speculating (like we do.) I looked to see when their spring break was. It's not until the week of the 20th, so I'm hoping they have all of these decisions sent out before then. -
And a couple more today (though one is maybe from the other day. Is anybody else going to claim a Purdue admit?
-
Agreed. I can't imagine ever having to take that thing again. I failed the writing section, and I was so worried about my scores this app season. My advisor reminded me that I got into an MA with the bad score and that I had a writing sample that clearly belied the score on the GRE (btw-- belie was totally one of my GRE vocab study words...). It's just so stressful, and some people just do not test well. I remember I was really sick that day and had to raise my hand and ask permission whenever I needed to get a testing center approved tissue to blow my nose.

I applied to their RCTE PhD and am starting to get anxious. The English PhD had a separate deadline, but I imagine that decisions will occur within the same timeframe because accepted, funded students would all get TA-ships in English. Is anyone else waiting to hear from U of A? I asked when we'd hear back and was told "March."

Yeah....moving is going to happen but it makes my head ache to think about it. I'm anxious to hear from UW, but this would also be the most complicated move for me. It's also the most expensive city on my list, by far. But Juan Guerra is there, so... -
Wow. A world without grad cafe. I'll bet those folks are way more productive than I am. Maybe even making real strides toward finishing their MA theses. Hmmm.

I'm out. I got one of those Sunday night e-mails. The awesome part? I actually SLEPT last night. Good luck to the rest of you!

This. Some schools may be pretty methodical about the wait list, but I think it's important to make sure they know you would gladly accept an offer if they made one to you. Think of it from their perspective-- after finding themselves with an open slot, they may be more interested in offering that slot to somebody that's been in contact, that has (since notified of the waitlist) expressed that they are still very interested. Otherwise they risk the fact that they make an offer to somebody that THEY'VE heard crickets from since the waitlist notification (and who knows if they've accepted another offer since then?). I dont think that's always going to be the case, but as a rule of thumb I think you should definitely make sure they know you are still interested. You should also make an effort to check in routinely.

Rhet/Comp roundup

I have been really lucky so far-- no rejections yet, but I'm sure I'll get some soon. I'm waiting on U of A, U of WA, Purdue, and UT-Austin. I'm waiting on funding info from ASU, and I've gotten a nice offer from Louisville. It's nice to know I'll be going somewhere, at least. How about you? -
Really sorry to hear this. I'm sure I'll be joining you soon since this was a real long shot for me.
-
A previous poster had heard that decisions would be made by the end of the week. But really, I'm just speculating here. Maybe we do this Monday. I don't know anymore.
-
Alright, friends. Today is quite possibly the day. Let's do this.
-
Hi, Sunny. I'm a rhet/comp person. I do have teaching experience, and I'm sure the wait won't be long since March is....next week. I think there are other programs out there (where I got my MA, for one) that admit first and sort out funding later. Congrats to you, too!
-
Thanks for tracking that down! I should clarify that I called it a wait-list because the e-mail I received said specifically "Currently there is a waiting list for the TA positions." The e-mail gave me the impression that it wasn't a typical wait-list situation, though, and that matches up with what you found on the website.
-
I heard back from the graduate coordinator, and it sounds like if you didn't already receive a notification like crutch received, then you're wait-listed for funding. I was told I'd hear something in a few weeks. And congrats on that fellowship, crutch!

I sent an e-mail to the generic department e-mail address listed on our acceptance letter-- got an automated reply back: "Thank you for your interest in English<http://english.clas.asu.edu/> graduate studies at Arizona State University.<http://www.asu.edu/> Due to the high volume of emails, please allow at least five business days for a response." So....no word yet.
-
My belief is that it's by the proximity of your folder to the person in charge of sending the e-mail or pushing the button. So yeah, probably random. I don't think an adcomm is going to take the time to put applicant files back in alphabetical order after they make their decisions.
-
Maybe it's by birth month! Anyone get a rejection who was born after september? Or by place of birth. Anyone from the midwest? Maybe they're working their way east to west.
-
was that you saying "holy balls" on the results board? Congratulations. I wonder when we'll hear something from the department? That's the one place where I was never in touch with anyone in the department office. Or any faculty, come to think of it.
-
Sometimes I see what could possibly be illogical reasoning on this forum (which is sometimes necessary to soothe anxiety), but I think this is a perfectly logical assumption to make. And besides, the grad coordinator said back in January that we could e-mail her if we don't hear by March 1. So another week either way. fingers crossed.
-
Thanks so much-- and congratulations! And meanwhile, I got another acceptance out of the blue tonight, so I can't complain at all. So that tells me that they were perhaps hoping to invite other people to a paid visit if anyone declines. That might be why (as an earlier poster mentioned) they expected to have two dates for acceptances. I'm not discounting you yet, UT-Austin.
-
Hooray! That was such a nice surprise to see that. I was checking that page frequently today. An e-mail followed a few minutes later. I just e-mailed the department to say I was looking forward to hearing about funding.
-
I just randomly logged into my.asu.edu to find that my status had changed from "in review" to "Congratulations!" So....check your statuses, comp rhet people!

Me too. The offer I've got in hand is for four years, though I've heard that those that take 5 years get hired as adjuncts for year 5. But I have a pretty focused research agenda and some other incentives to get in and out as quickly as possible (and I've got an MA, too.)
