Well, think of it this way-- do you want to spend more than four years in middle of nowhere Indiana? (no offense intended to Indiana or its inhabitants.)
-
I don't think it's over yet. I think what this tells us is they've identified who they'd like to invite to the weekend (was it paid?), but it's still a little early to say that it's all over. I would imagine that's why the fast turnaround-- so they can invite others to the weekend if somebody declines? Or maybe not. But super hearty congratulations to BeeRuckus and giaour!

Congrats! I looked up that fellowship-- sounds like a good deal! (and sounds like they really think you're an awesome fit for the department).

Yeah, those are the two programs that would keep me from accepting the offer I already have. I wasn't holding out much hope, so I shouldn't even be anxious about it. I just don't like loose ends.

In January I remember getting mass e-mail from the graduate assistant informing us that if we hadn't heard by March 1 we should e-mail her. So I'm going to give it a week....

It definitely wasn't me. Between Austin starting to notify yesterday and now this, I'm probably going to have to disconnect my internet if I hope to stay productive this week. Congratulations, whoever you are!

Rhet/Comp roundup
Chris83 replied to snappysorbet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Louisville's stipend is very generous-- it's a 2-2 load, though. I sort of feel like I've lost any right to complain, and I've heard Louisville is a great place to live. I think at this point I'm headed to Kentucky unless by some miracle Purdue or UT Austin decide they want me. Congrats on your acceptance, too. -
Rhet/Comp roundup

Well, I think waiting seems endless for everyone. But I'm getting quite antsy too. I have a nice offer in hand already-- I just want to hurry up and get rejected from the other schools so I can get used to the idea of moving to Kentucky. -
Congratulations! I think the stipend is about 15k on a 1-1 load. (less if you don't have an MA) I'm still waiting to hear anything, and I've decided that they must notify rhet/comp separately than lit people.

Congratulations!

I checked my online status and it just says that my stuff has been sent to the department for review. Boo. Glad you guys are all here freaking out with me!

Ahhhhh! Congrats to the lucky applicant who posted their acceptance! Excuse me while I commence with the nervous twitching and stomach butterfly-ing now.

A SCREEEEEEEEEAM INTO THE SILENCE
Chris83 replied to Eli-'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Sort of lame that I got the idea from a Disarrono commercial, but ginger ale and amaretto is pretty tasty as well. -
Me too. I don't post much on this board, and even though I haven't interacted with you at all, your acceptance news totally made my day! I had read your story and was pulling for you.

Congrats to the ASU acceptances! I've also applied to their PhD in English, but in the rhetoric, comp, linguistics concentration. I'm assuming they notify separately, but that's the one place that hasn't communicated an approximate notification timeframe to me, so I was curious.

Hooray! Congratulations!

Academic Complex because of Funding
Chris83 replied to ZeeMore21's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Another thing to consider is that at the school where you were given funding that includes teaching-duties, you will be among a cohort of other incoming PhD students who will be in the same boat. Socially and mentally it's nice to have a cohort. You could train and take pedagogy classes until the cows come home and still never feel 100% ready to teach on your own for the first time. You just have to do it. The first semester is exciting, awkward, stressful, but rewarding. You'll be able to share all of those ups and downs with a cohort who will be your friends and colleagues for the rest of your life. I was actually nominated for a fellowship (which would make my first and last years in the program fully funded with no teaching duties) at the only school I've heard back from. While I'd be incredibly grateful and lucky to receive this fellowship, I've been telling myself that I'd probably rather teach my first year so that I can be a part of the cohort that I enter with. -
How much info do we mention about other acceptances?
Chris83 replied to XOwlfan's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I don't think there's anything wrong with being upfront about it. In fact, if they are serious about recruiting you, they probably EXPECT that you have other offers to entertain. Good luck with your trips and your decisions! And congratulations on your success so far. -
Rhet/Comp roundup
Chris83 replied to snappysorbet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
that was me. I'm pretty excited that my first notification was a positive one. (edited to add-- I wouldn't totally discount getting in-- it's possible they are sorting out funding decisions still.) -
Rhet/Comp roundup
Chris83 replied to snappysorbet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hello. I'll throw myself into the fray here. I'm applying to rhet/comp PhD programs, and currently (going crazy in the process) completing an MA in English with a rhet/comp focus. I've applied to the following schools: U of AZ (RCTE) ASU Louisville Purdue UT-Austin U of WA Has anyone heard from Louisville yet? There aren't too many results posted from previous years, but it looks like they've notified by end of January in the past.
