Let's bump this thread once again and encourage those that got in and beginning their studies in their respective schools to share their SOPs and profiles with the applicants of this season. Also - is there a way to pin this thread? I am not very forum-savvy so if anyone can do it please go ahead. This is one of the most useful threads ever created.

I agree with HK2004. There are a number of good policy-oriented PhD programs in the U.S. that might be worth looking at (Georgetown's PhD in poli-sci is not one of them though). JHU-SAIS, Tufts-Fletcher School, Harvard-Kennedy School, Princeton-Woodrow Wilson, U Pittsburgh-GSPIA are all places that has policy oriented PhD programs. There are also other schools that are more leaning toward Public Policy like RAND-Pardee but I don't know if that kind of a route is how you'd like to proceed. It might also be a good idea to check out the Professional Programs - Government Affairs forums, since such programs kind of fall into their jurisdiction.

I was wondering how the people in the forum would rank the political science departments based on their strength on quantitative IR. So I just decided to throw this out there. Any comments on why you rank the programs the way you did would be especially welcome. If you rather prefer to provide a list of -or just comment on- the departments in terms of their strength in a more specific aspect of quant IR (formal / statistical or IPE / security etc.) that is also welcome. The point is to inform the members of the forum about the quant IR world, possibly help current and future applicants in their decisions as well as to have fun. You can even make a drinking game out of it (i.e. one shot if someone doesn't put rochester at the top of the list, one if stanford tops a list, one if NYU is ranked higher than UMich...)

Don't give up hope until getting the actual rejection letters. That being said, I know that UVA has a rolling process so if you didn't hear anything it is possible that you are still on the running / on an unofficial waitlist. I think it was said earlier that Brown sent out all admits, but I am not entirely sure. No idea about McGill.

I still didn't hear from 4 schools so I will also be around. Though it has been harder to bring myself in here after all the rejections. I don't know if my heart can handle another cycle, but as of now, it seems like it might have to.

I can't think of any better time for you to get drunk! as a side note, i think i am among the few in this forum who has to wait longer and longer for good news (that is, if there are any), while watching everyone conclude their cycles and leave.. sigh

I e-mailed UVA. They said they had a rolling process, that they made some offers and will do some more. So UVA hopefuls may continue to be hopeful.

Georgetown might also be a good choice I think

With all due respect, I think "a week and a half" is not a point between "about a week" and "about two weeks". It is a more precise temporal expression which can only be classified together with "a week", "two weeks" "two and a half weeks" and the like. So "about a week" only certainly ends when we hit the point of "two weeks", anything before that can still be considered "about a week". Of course, you may argue that this Sunday onward (when it will exceed "a week and a half") the more preferable expression to refer to the time passed after your phone call would be "about two weeks". While that is true, we should not forget that unlike their more precise cousins, the "about" famiglia does not have a cutting point where one ends and the next one begins. Rather, the succession happens through fading away and melting into each other. Thus the time between Sunday (the 11th day) and Wednesday (14th day) could be described as an interval where "about a week" and "about two weeks" overlap. In this case, if Madison contacts you before Feb 22 (Wednesday) they will meet their promise of informing you in "about a week" .

There is a huge forum for political science PhD applicants. I also see that there are a few topics in here, in the Government Affairs forum for those who applied to public policy PhD programs. Maybe it is just me (if so an admin can delete this thread) but there seems to be a serious lack of information / platform for solidarity, for people who applied to PhD programs at IR schools like JHU-SAIS, Fletcher, American Uni (SIS), maybe Pitt's GSPIA etc (insert others). While creating this topic, my intention was to fill that gap. So if you are one of those people, come over and let's pull out some hair together.

I am right there with the bird on this. Hang in there sir grantman!! Don't do this to yourself. Getting rejections suck, I got flat rejections last cycle (it doesn't seem like I am doing any better this time too) so I know. Still, if there is a single issue everyone in this forum would agree on, that is the unpredictable and opaque nature of this process. Don't assume anything until you have solid reasons for those assumptions. Even if you don't get in anywhere in this cycle, you can always try again, or go do some other awesome thing. But don't throw in the towel yet! Plus I need you to repeat these words to me within a couple of weeks. So hang in there

If those Stanford acceptances are real. I am officially and permanently done making any predictions this cycle. Neither in the forum nor in my mind. Things have gotten really weird this year, really really weird
