  1. Congrats kolja on OSU, great school, great program! Hopefully you will hear more good news from your other applications soon. Also kudos to the Vandy admits!

People who got rejected from Duke, keep your heads up! We are not even midway through this process. All you need is one acceptance, and I am sure there will be more than one for you guys. Those who didn't hear anything from Duke yet - I guess we came to the point where no news is good news.

  2. tergellian, balderdash, RWBG, bodywithoutorgans and Tamboursg'sell CONGRATS GUYS!!!!! I am so happy for you!! Hopefully these will be the first (second and third :)) of the many good news you will hear very soon!! I really like it when people here bring good news, I really do.

as for OSU, three results yesterday (which no one claimed) and none today. that doesn't sync well with the results of previous years. not that i am entirely convinced that they are fake but what do you guys think?

ps. and tergellian, no more chainsmoking for you I presume :)

  3. I am in the same boat. I have checked the app status link through the Graduate College, and all I see is that my application is "In Review." Kolja I am also in the IR field, any partcular area of IR you are focusing on? Mine is Int'l Development.

My subfield is also IR, though mine is more IR theories, state identity, rivalry etc. OSU seems to be sending admission decisions over a few days according to the results of previous years, so hopefully we will all hear some good news this week.

Whirlibird congrats on the Duke acceptance!! Fingers crossed for other Duke people

  4. I think it varies tremendously. I'm sure UVA, Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins get 200+. Likewise, schools near major metro areas probably also get close to that number, think CUNY, Rutgers, Georgetown, George Washington.

Georgetown Government received 514 apps last year and 568 apps in 2009 according to their website...

  5. More generally to everyone, even getting rejected everywhere is not the worst thing in the world

getting rejected everywhere TWICE might be pretty close to being the worst thing in the world

My guess is we hear from Michigan, Rochester, Duke, Stanford, and UCLA by the end of next week. Anyone else want to place bets?

Apparently OSU notified admits on 4 Feb last year, and Northwestern did the same the year before.

  6. Edit: Speaking of signatures, what does 7.5 applications mean? You've piqued my interest.

The half application means I have the application prepared for a safety school and will submit if I don't hear any good news in the first two weeks of February.

by the way what's up with the consistent negative rep points? i guess someone in this forum really has an issue with you

  7. As a faculty member in a department that has to play this game often because of lack of funding, here are my 2 cents. The DGS knows exactly what the situation is - they may lose the funding if they offer it to you and they go elsewhere, but they may decide to do it anyway. Tell him/her the truth about where else you have applied, and they will decide how to proceed. Any other talk is cheap talk and everyone knows it.

Edited to add: no need to reveal any information unless asked, or to be terribly specific about your other applications, but I would advise you not to be dishonest: tell them you are excited, but unable to commit until you hear from a range of other places.

Dr. Higgins (well obviously this is not your name, but it sounds appropriate), it is a bit early to ask, but I would like to hear what advice you might have about negotiating funding packages.

  8. Tamaloo - There is no distinction between students (international or not) when it comes to sending out decisions. If, of course, the department decides to send out actual letters and nothing else, I would expect the prospective student in India to get the news later than the one in Boston.

Wmplax - regarding sub-disciplines - I believe that is the case, though it is more rigid in some universities than others. Let's say X university wants to get 5 students for the IR sub-division and 5 for theory. There is a possibility that they will play with the numbers and make it 4 IR and 6 Theory after seeing your supercalifragilisticexpialidotious application (which is somehow worse than those of all the other 5 theory people but rocks compared to the lame IR files). Then again that might not be something to rely on since schools usually admit more people than their target number of incoming students. Well, what do i know..

  9. If it makes you feel any better, I'm a second timer as well :) First applications were in 2009 for admission F2010.

Having the experience of applying before helps -- with everything but the anxiety. Still have 9 out, still on the slow slide toward insanity. Hope the rest of the letters come soon!

Then kudos to you as well sir (ma'am?). I hope you get into your first choice, provided it is not Madison.

As for the African Cup, maybe balderdash is not interested this year because of the absence of Egypt and Nigeria?

  10. That happens to me as well. Later on I realized that many people just want to be nice, they don't really care about your application results.

Which is ironic since being constantly asked about the results is the least nice thing that can be done to people in our situation. I certainly don't need additional help to remember my applications.
