  1. Congrats Anthroman!!! You must be so happy. Cambridge is an awesome city and a great place to have a young child. I am sure that you will both really love it. And please, message me if you want to know ANYTHING about Cambridge. I have lived there for almost four years and I know all about the city and the university. Best wishes!
  2. I too have had my frustrations with the UK system. I have been unofficially admitted at Cambridge where I have a professor who I would really like to work with. However I have not been offered funding and there is almost no chance of this happening. On the other hand, I have been offered admission by two US schools with full funding and stipend (5 yrs), one of which I have accepted and will be taking up in September. I should also add that I had admission with no chance of funding at two other excellent departments in the UK. While the UK still has some of the best departments in the world (UCL, Ox, Cam, St Andrews etc), the current funding drain equates to a brain drain that will have serious consequences on british anthropology in the coming decades. Cambridge is a great place and the department there is solid, but the admissions system is a joke. I wish you the best of luck with your funding!
  3. Just wondering if anybody has declined an offer of a PhD at UChicago? (I'm on the waitlist and am trying to size up my likely options.) Thanks.
  4. Just wondering what people know or have experienced regarding 'bumped up' stipends or allowances that grad programs make for students with dependent children. Do they usually offer more money or is this unusual? Thanks for your comments!
  5. I have an unofficial acceptance from Cambridge (MRes) via an email from the graduate coordinator. I expect official letters/emails will follow in the next few weeks/months...
  6. I'm waiting on Oxford too (college choice that is), however when I visited the department they told me that there is almost no chance of funding. Apparently they have one ESRC studentship and it is likely to be given to an internal candidate. Sorry mate....
  7. Don't forget that social anthropology was invented in London. And don't also forget that the intellectual scene in Paris is unreal. North American 'elitism' only really carries significance in North America. And of course, wherever you go, profs tend more often to be educated in that nation. The whole 'trading on brand' is meaningless unless you produce some research that can stand up to it of course. In my opinion UCL is probably as good as anywhere right about now. Oxbridge are great too, as is Manchester, St.Andrews, Aberdeen and also Goldsmiths london. Don't be afraid to look outside the states!
  8. I just did it manually adjusting the margins and column settings on MIcrosoft Word. I don't know about open office I'm afraid.
  9. I sent a five thousand word essay as a writing sample. I formatted narrow margines, made the page format twin columned like an article and I used a small font. It fitted on five pages total and I didn't get any complaints. I know this is a bit pushy, but this essay was an expanded research proposal and I needed to get it to their desks... If you want to send them your whole essay I recommend this method!!!
  10. Thanks Orzai! I cetrainly hope you have success with Stanford!! All the best! :-)
  11. I'm surprised you haven't heard anything back because they sent the official acceptances and waitlist emails two days ago. I think it is probably bad news for you, sorry. But if I were you, I'd just call Anne, the grad coordinator and ask.
  12. Hey Persiandoc! Congratulations on your wonderful news at NYU. I am delighted to hear that you have got the acceptance you want. That's awesome. My interview at MIT went really well. The committee were pretty nice and positive. However, looking at the results section, it seems that a great application and interview doesn't ncesarily count for anything so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I hope either MIT or Chicago come through, otherwise it could be another year of apps.... Anyway, have a drink on me for your great success with NYU ;-)
  13. Hey Guys, I am on the waitlist from UChicago and have been told by the dept that movement on the waitlist depends on what the fields of those who decline are. They won't say where I am on the list because the list is kind of vague and dependent on field. So, just wondering if anyone is declining Chicago and what their field is; or if anyone else is in my position. (I am interested in Amazonian shamanism, medical anthropology and STS theory.) Would be great to hear your thoughts! Thanks!
  14. Hey Persiandoc. I just got rejected from Berkeley Med Anthro :-( The grad coordinator told me that they only accepted two out of thirty eight applicants this year.... Probably funding issues as California has no money. I have my HASTS interview on Friday so I'll let you know how it goes. Have you had any acceptances yet?
  15. thanks persiandoc. You are probably right. We probably would have heard something by now from harvard. RE: Berkeley, I havent heard anything either. Not sure if the med anthros are being informed separately, as the cultural acceptances were sent out last week. Last bit of hope.... I dont know what place I am in the chicago wait list; ill probably email them this week to try find out.
  16. Hey persiandoc!!! Hope all is well with you and that the stress levels are not too bad :-) Does this mean that Harvard have contacted all the successful applicants? and does this include med anthro? Thanks for keeping us up to date!!!
  17. Sorry guys. Anyone have any information about Berkeley and Harvard Medical anthro acceptances? I know loads of cultural anthros have been accepted and I am up the walls checking my emails every thirty seconds.......
  18. Sit tight persiandoc!! We are all in the same boat!! I'm sure you will get one of your top choices!!
  19. I just heard back from Harvard grad coordinator that I'll hear back by the 'end of the month,' Nothing definite, so looks like they maybe haven't made any decisions yet.
  20. Has anyone heard back from Berkeley or Harvard's Medical Anthropology Program? Thanks!
  21. Anything from Harvard Medical anthro yet? Or Berkeley Med anthro? Tense times; can't keep away from my email.....
  22. Not yet. But I am thinking of ringing the dept.!!!! I have arranged a meeting for next week with some of the med anthro faculty (when i do my hasts interview in boston) but they gave me no indication as to my application status.......
  23. are you med anthro or cultural? I am waiting to hear back from my med anth app at harvard. Any more info ?
  24. I am awaiting a decision from Cambridge. I know that the PhD admissions committee have already reviewed applications but I have no result yet.
  25. Cool. Yeah, judging from previous years' posts the med anthros didn't get interviews but got informed this week if they were accepted. So I guess I'll hear soon if I get lucky. Does anyone know how the financial packages vary from Chicago, UCB, Harvard (or others) etc....? Looking from previous posts, it seems that Berkeley offers less, but teh bay area is very expensive for living...
