  1. I don't have much to add to the above -- my congratulations on those acceptances, and best luck in the future -- except that this is exactly the situation recruitment/interview weekends were designed for. Go to both schools, meet with the faculty, meet the graduate students, check out the area, check out the institutional resources, and then ask yourself where you want to be for the foreseeable future. And remember that, as mentioned above, there's going to be a major economic difference between that astounding 30,000 dollars in Charlottesville and 19,500 dollars in Chicago.
  2. I've been looking at 16-21k depending on the institution, for 4-6 years. WUSTL, Emory, Duke and Northwestern seem to be generous with their financial packages.
  3. I'd guess that 67 converts to around a 3.6, which should get by any GPA cutoffs. Plus there's the rest of your application, you know...
  4. Afraid I'm in the same boat as you; nary a word from them about anything.
  5. When I studied abroad in England, they advised my US college to consider a First an A and an Upper Second an A-, Lower Second a B+/B (depending on how high) etc. Of course, my US college didn't award the A+ grade, but I'd generally see a 70 as a 3.8, and a 74 just on the 3.9/4.0 boundary.
  6. I might also mention Harvard, depending on your specific interests. Professor Marjorie Garber is head of Visual and Environmental Studies (where Film Study resides) and also holds a chair in the English department, and there are other faculty with cross-disciplinary interests tending that direction.
  7. Thanks orinincandenza. I've actually checked with the admissions people, and yes, they did mean me. But I'd still suggest that they're not completely operating at 100%, so no one should worry too much about a slow roll-out of admissions. They're a bit out of it  things might go slowly.
  8. I just got a call and email from Brandeis, accepting me. However, I posit that something is wrong in the department, at least as regards my acceptance. I'll cut/paste the key phrase for you: I wouldn't dare comment on my qualifications :? but...this isn't right. I work on Shakespeare. I submitted my thesis chapter on The Winter's Tale. I have never written about the death of Antigone in my life. Something's weird.
  9. I would agree with needingspring. I am staring at the computer hoping it's not some sort of prank. But since the visit is mid-March, from my experiences (and friend's experiences) last year with schools that means they certainly haven't notified everyone yet - otherwise the weekend would be sooner. Don't give up hope!
  10. I would echo the comments above about walking and biking if you can - it's a very bike-friendly city, and it is gorgeous to bike in, while the traffic can be a nightmare for a car, especially some of the bridges. Stanley Park is an amazing public resource, even though it can get a little shady at night. The Asian food is particularly good in Vancouver, while what would be standard US fare (like burgers, hot dogs, etc) tends to be overcooked and oversalted, so let that sort of information filter down to your cuisine choices. Overall, Vancouver is a wonderful city, and UBC (while not particularly near the city center) is in a great location.
  11. From my experience at a visit weekend last year (Hopkins), the 13 people admitted went around the room as follows: 1 Renaissance 2 Long 18th century 4-5 19th century 5-6 20th century I don't know if that reflects the applicant pool, but that was the distribution in the admitted pool.
