  1. Rejected here. Good luck everyone!
  2. Ive been thinking tomorrow will be the day. They usually send notifications on the first friday of the first full week in april or somewhere around the 5th/6th.
  3. We should probably start getting word back next week (likely Friday).
  4. I've been told by faculty that a general rule of thumb is that you tend to end up at institutions one tier below your program (unless you went to Harvard, Berkley, UChicago, etc. those tend to cycle within each other.) But that doesn't mean you shouldn't still try to have a great CV, because there are exceptions.
  5. Everyone gets these feelings regardless of what school they go to. They usually go away once you start realizing that everyone else feels the same way (even those that have amazing backgrounds). Once you start, you begin to feel dumb all the time, but also realize that even the smartest professors feel dumb when going to ASA conferences. It's just part of the life.

Hope those of you accepted to the program can make it to the recruitment day! Congrats! Those of us in the program already are excited to meet you all.
  7. Note that if you are emailing Sharon Collins, she is no longer the director. Anna Guevarra is the new Sociology director of graduate studies.
  8. The recruitment day is March 18th.

I have grown up in Chicago, went to undergrad at DePaul and will be going to UIC for graduate school. So, I'm a bit biased. I love my city! Regarding events for international students, you can find almost every ethnic and national group in Chicago. I'm not sure where you are from, but I'm sure you can find events, restaurants, cultural organizations, etc. from your culture here in Chicago. Evanston is separate from the city of Chicago, but its easy to get to Chicago using public transportation. The summers are amazing here (a festival every week) and the winters make you appreciate them even more! (Nice spin =D). Chicago is one of my more segregated cities in the country, if not the world. The up side to this is the presence of many ethnic enclaves that are rich in culture.

  11. I will be taking a week trip to the Yucatán to visit some Maya ruins and spend some time in Mérida. I'm also taking another trip, but not sure where yet. Trying to get traveling in!
  12. I've only read books within my interests. There Goes the Neighborhood by William Julius Wilson and Richard Taub, Uncommon Common Ground by Pastor, Blackwell, and Kwoh, Social Organization of the Slums by Whyte, and of course The Declining Significance of Race by WJ Wilson.
  13. Yes, it has said that since all my materials were received. Good luck to you!
  14. No idea. I received my acceptance on Tuesday, but the website still says "Pending - Manual Review Req". Don't know what to tell you. Sorry.
