  1. Wanted to start by mentioning a huge THANK YOU to all the members of the forum for their sincere and timely advice that guided us along the hazardous path of applications and the equivocal journey of the selection process:

    THANK YOU

    MERCI BEAUCOUP

    GRACIAS

    GRAZIE

    VIELEN DANK

    ASANTE, etc!

Wishing you all the best in your postgraduate studies and all the plans and ambitions you foster!

Ad astra per aspera (A rough road leads to the stars)

  2. I'm writing because I'm getting confused and overwhelmed. I'm losing motivation, which is so critical at this point in my grad school career...

I'm starting to regret that I moved. The project is good, the lab members are great, the boss is a great mentor and scientist, although pushy at times. But right now, I feel like I'm throwing everything that's good in my life away, for the sake of getting a PhD. There is no hope.

    Hey GrandeChaiLatte,

"Ad astra per aspera" A rough road leads to the stars.

You'll finish the work pileup really soon (you'll see) and everyone (your Family, your Boyfriend and your Boss) will be thoroughly impressed and pleased with what you will have accomplished. Keep up with the hard work!!!

  3. Hey,

I have been offered recommendation for admission to UMichigan but I have yet to receive the formal admission offer letter. Is there anyone of you experiencing the same thing as me? Would there be any chances that in the end I got rejected?

    Thanks!

You're most likely in. Rackham mainly does the paperwork and the formal admission process. You should hear from them in a short while. In my case, it was two days after the 'recommendation' for admission. The 'recommendation' letter was pretty much hinting at certain admission, with phrases such as "We appreciate your interest in our program and we are looking forward to having you here for your graduate studies...." Perhaps yours had a similar tone?

  4. Thanks for the responses. I am going to accept the UW offer. The decision is based on money but they are also the only program that has reached out to me. Minnesota has been unhelpful or non-responsive in their emails and UMD basically told me "There's no assistantships in your desired area, but you can work with so-and-so if you want."

And yes, my username is a reference to the sc2 pro ;) hahah. Diamond terran here.

I'm guessing it depends on what you wish to do with your degree (Job industry vs Academia), and if your selected school offers you research in your area of interest.

Sometimes the 'reputation' of your school doesn't matter... if you are happy with the department (prompt responses to emails by faculty) then that could be a good indicator of how they will treat you as their student.

Go with your heart, as I'm guessing you already have. All the best!

  5. Dear All:

I am an international student and have been admitted to a few universities for unfunded Masters. I have already accepted the offer from the university I wish to attend. I am a little hesitant in sending regret letters to the other universities - something in me says what if something goes wrong ( I don't know what might go wrong ), I'll have nothing to fall back upon. I have read in some other places that some students accept multiple offers and that is fine as long as they are all unfunded. I do not want to do so as I do not wish to spoil somebody's chances in getting into some other universities. Do the universities take this factor into account that some students although having accepted an offer will not join the universities, and therefore, make more offers than the number of seats available.

I do not wish to do anything immoral but I am a little afraid of removing plan B,C,D from my possible options in the future.

    Hello nobody2008,

Good that you've asked the question before replying to your other choices. I made the mistake of sending rejection emails after formally accepting my offer... I learned that it was a wrong thing to do, since as you well said, anything could go wrong.

The best thing you could do is to delay your reply to the other Unis until the day (or hour) of the deadline (some may have it as April 15th), at least when you'll have weighed your options thoroughly.

  6. Hey BG7,

Hope things worked out well for you in terms of funding. My experience has that MS students do not easily get funding (unless they apply to direct PhD). Some of the programs I was applying to strongly hinted that PhD students are the priority for their funding. As was1984 indicated, it could be possible to make an impression on the professors, and perhaps get funding for the second year....

  7. Hello newms,

Thanks a million for the resourceful tips. Yes, I have come across the off-campus housing, but I was unsure whether it was more expensive than on-campus. Thanks for the clarification. (The housing exploration is quite complicated from a couple '000 miles away) Lemme look them up right now!!!

Yep, North Campus is the location to be... I'd appreciate the list of apartments that you got during the visit weekend... Good to hear about the Bus, which makes a place further from North Campus another option.

  8. Hello fellow UMich comrades. It wasn't easy debating and analysing which school to choose. Anyone headed for MSE Aerospace? Any advice on accomodation (on-campus vs. off-campus) pros and cons? PS: I'm an international student, getting used to the new environment may take some time. And yes, i love cold weather!!!!!!!!!
