  1. consider the co-managed national labs at Stony Brook. For instance, the Brookhaven National Lab is co-managed by Stony Brook, MIT, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia and University of California (Yet I don't know if they work in your field. You have to check it by yourself). The only negative aspect to me is the high number of Master students at Stony Brook in your field and of course bad living circumstances (which in your case wouldn't be a concern as you will be staying for only 2 years)
  2. Hello every one, I have been recently admitted to both Arizona State University and SUNY Stony Brook. The two of them have offered me a MSc degree. According to the USNEWS, they are standing on the same level : 37. According to the NRC, ASU has been ranked 16 and Stony brook 23. Well, since my offer from Stony Brook is somehow older, I am pretty familiar with its positive points. I know that they have connection with several national labs such as BNL working simultaneously with MIT, Columbia, Princeton and Cornell. But my information about ASU is quite little. The only positive point about ASU that I am aware of right now is the fact "Tempe" is a better place for a graduate student to live. Moreover, housing and accessibility is more convenient at ASU in contrast to Stony Brook. If there is anyone who has first hand experience and can give me clues on which offer to choose, I really appreciate the help. PS. Funding is not important to me. I am seeking a program to provide me good opportunities for applying to a good PhD program afterward. Regards, Arash
  3. Your academic comparison is quite sound to me. My point is about your generalization that the "long island is not well known". As I mentioned in my previous post this generalization especially from a person in mathematics doesn't seem rational. Otherwise the rest of your discussion, as I mentioned, is helpful.
  4. It is completely interesting that I am reading this "out of long island" thing of yours for the second time. Well unfortunately, I am not gonna sit here for your nonsense deduction to get spread. It seems more like a wait-listed attitude toward a university with the sole purpose of making others disappointed ! LOL ! What reference do you use for saying it is not well known ? your own experience ? in what field ? how many companies have told you that ? how many cities have you traveled to get this idea? well that wouldn't be a wise deduction unless you are Marco-Polo ! and if you are utilizing someone else experience, then unless it is a well known reference your claim is out of the circle. As far as I am concerned if somebody doesn't know Stony Brook, well then it is his own problem ! because he might as well be unfamiliar with the NOBLE prize ! As you probably don't know the SB is quiet prestigious for winning noble prizes both inside the campus and especially on the NBL. That was a simple reason, the rest are so long to explain. sorry mate, but your reasoning seems completely callow to me. If you prefer Stanford, that's OK with me. but stop this "out of long island' ridiculous thing By the way, the last time I checked the city, Stanford was not located in LA !
  5. Well, it's completely expected that a master student wouldn't get the same attention as a PhD student which is why all the fundings will usually go to the PhD students. Unfortunately, I am international student and so I am afraid paying a visit wouldn't be an option for me. Though I have to admit the numbers that you are mentioning is somehow very much concerning. I can only hope they don't get so many MSc students in our department. By the way, UCSB has got the 1st ranked program in our field and so it wouldn't be a wise choice for me I may email the department to check the numbers with them
  6. I am in the same position as yours. I have been admitted to the Materials Science and Engineering MSc program at Stony Brook which is ranked among top 25 programs in the nations. My primary target is to apply for a Top 10 PhD program afterwards and as far as I know it seems more logical. As it can be seen in the result section the trend is toward getting PhD students who already posses a Master degree. Moreover, although I have quite a heavy research background, the topics are not in the center of attention by most of the professor. So I guess getting a MSc in a Top 25 program would be a wise wise choice. Correct me if I am wrong.

    Stony Brook

Hi there, I have been also accepted to the Materials Science and Engineering MSc program at Stony Brook. I have also other offers from University of Houston and ... but as far as I am concerned the rankings are on the Stony Brook side by a great deal. Well, I have to admit that some of your comments made me really nervous about the surroundings there! Since I am an international student and I plan to apply to a TOP 10 PhD program afterward, the ranking and the reputation is very important to me. I believe I can handle hell alone for 2 years since it is not that too long a period. anyone has any comments about the program ?
