  1. Absolutely YES. I'v done it before.
  2. There is no Extra Fee for choosing which score you want to be reported. You can chose either one or all of them and the price would be the same. Regarding the thread question, whether the Verbal is important or not really depends on the school policy and on how much weight they put on Verbal section. Generally schools look at you application as a whole and it's really hard to say how that verbal impact your application alone.

    Tempe, AZ

Grigio is a nice apartment complex. If I don't make a mistake there two complexes of this group on Tempe. One is located on Apachi Dr. and the other somewhere near Tempe lake. The one on Apachi Dr. is more convenient to live in since it's close to Light Rail. Though there is a big problem with the atmosphere aside from being an over-priced apartment complex. I prefer to live in a complex where tenants are mostly Americans ! or Asians (as they are peaceful and neat people).
  4. Now that we are talking about Social Websites, I have my POI in Linkedin and I am vigorously following his new connections to see if he is making new connection with any prospective student Safe so FAR
  5. I am having this weird feeling that I am loosing UCSB ... I was pretty sure I would get the offer and then decline it ... Anyway, that's a good practice: knowing beforehand I mean
  6. to UIUC folks: Looks like Dr. John Weaver has become fast this semester :-) Although I guess the current admission are based on Professor Advocacy rather than normal applications.
  7. First admission dream last night and guess what "Conditional Admission to Stanford" ))) ... I couldn't find any info on the web page I was reviewing I only saw the stanford logo Got so disappointed when woke up )
  8. haha ... yeah when I was applying for my masters two years ago I used to be the same way... I did put so many alarms on every electronic device I could fine to make a noise when I receive an email. You may not believe it but I worked 2 times for me I mean I got this noise, jumped behind my computer and saw the admission offer email. But this time ... bouuuuu ... BORING ... I don't even remember my username and password to the status page ) ...
  9. A dream that I often see recently is that I am having this course that I have totally forgotten about. It's the weeks (or in certain occasions the exam day itself) and I'v just learned that I have this course ! I am so frightened and afraid. I know nothing about the exam contents and have done none of the homeworks or midterms ... It's a total nightmare ! The other dream I tend to see after finals is that I have gotten a bad mark ! then I wake up and after a few moments I realize that my scores had been posted a while ago and I 'v got what I wanted ... So I get relax and go back to sleep ! I think I am loosing my mind in grad school !!!
  10. Please be advised that not all faculties have money currently. Some will find sooner or later and some really don't have any plan on getting new students. In electronic materials Newman's group has lots of resources but he's kindda tough on his students. I have no list of "Avoid"
  11. Well for instance in MSE you have 4 core courses that you must pass. These guys brought some dude from industry without any academic background to teach the course and well what he did was to copy paste someone else material in the class and he had no idea about the content! I really didn't care about the course but I suppose there are people out there who care ! poor things, missed alot They are very strong in Electronic Materials, but what they are #1 for in the US is Electron Microscopy. Of course that's sort of bad for your mental health but that's what they are famous for (we are famous for) and the second place goes to electronic materials. The research in multidiciplinary and you might end up working in the physics department. We have facinating facilities though as you know facilities run on faculty money. the research expenditure of ASU is around 80 Million comparing to 200 and 300 Million on top of the table ! Nano : No Comment, never liked the fashion thing.
  12. There you have Dr. Crozier from Scotland in the admission comity. My fingers are crossed for you buddy. You 'll probably hear back from them in late March I guess. To be honest with you I have thought a lot to figure out what they really care in giving admission though I haven't come up with an answer yet ... Good thing about MSE program here is its very flexible and you can probably do whatever you like. Bad thing about MSE is you won't learn anything in their courses.
  13. Haha ... I am working in the Electrical Engineering Department (G-RA) and how I describe the place : "S**T HOLE" ... The only thing that's going to keep me here is my professor. Positive thing about ASU is that there are still some of those founder professors at ASU who are really number one in what they do (like my professor). They are few and their number is decreasing. What they tend to hire these years are mostly young faculty memebers who only look at ASU as a jumping stage and the moment they get a good grant they will move one. They get some 200 graduate student in EE department each year. I don't think getting into their is really a big deal with ~60% acceptance rate.
  14. I am sort of very certain that MIT's lower bound of GPA is arround 3.9 in majors such as Materials.
  15. Mediocre ... That how I describe it. And the people who get into Utah, they are mediocre too, at least those that I know. ( No fancy resume, grades or research)
  16. Okay my turn ... (hoho it sound like one of those AA sessions ) I did my undergrad back home in a decent university ( which is only decent domestically not internationally ) and proudly ( ) earned a UG-GPA of 2.9/4 . Fortunately I realized my goals in life (applying to US) and succeeded to get a GPA of 3.5 in the last two years of undergraduate. Basically the trend in my home school was so that if I take the courses again it won't matter that much ! Shitty professors, unfair grading, Blah Blah Blah ... When I realized that I want to continue my graduate studies in the US (That was a pretty big step from the point where I was) I went directly to a Professor who I had a good relation with and asked if I can work on any research project. He was kind enough to let me work on 2 projects during last 2 years of my undergraduate study and so I published 4 conference papers (Which I believe had no effect else than self-STEAM which I believe is very important) ... I was so determined so I could get a 780/630 in GRE (believe me that's incredible for people in my country ) and 111 on TOEFL and so I started my applications. I was sort trying to be both REALISTIC and IDEALISTIC and consequently I only applied to Master programs so that I can compensate for a PhD program in better school. I applied to about 10 schools only and only is US I got accepted to SUNY Stony Brook, Houston, Arlington, Portland State ... and of course got rejected from Gatech, Madison and U Washington (haha which is now lower in ranking that us ) ... I ended up in Arizona State University - 30 in MSE and 32 in EE I had no financial aid or so BUT what i HAD was faith in myself. I enrolled and after first semester I was among the only few master students on FULL FINANCIAL RA support working for one of the most world-famous professors in my field. I got a GPA of 4.2 out of 4 (yeah that's higher than 4 ) and I am currently having 3 astonishing recommendation letters from professors who are all willing to KEEP me for my PhD in their groups ! You can see schools that I have applied for PhD bellow, though the chances are that I may stay where I am for the PhD mainly : First because I have EARNED a very good reputation for myself and Second: I can finish my PhD in 3 years ! My 2 cents: Whenever you catch a FISH from water, it's gonna be FRESH ! it's never late to EARN that reputation
  17. First of all, GRE is not BS ! And yes it measures your ability to adapt and succeed. If one is good at what he's been doing for the past 4-5 years that's not intelegence, that's experience! Give someone a new topic and if he succeed I call him intellegent. Anyway, you have good credentials and I believe you do care about your education. So why you wanna go to some mediocre school that doesn't require GRE? Why do you want to get a mediocre education? You have best chances with your GPA. If you really don't like GRE, just apply to Canada instead. At least you'll get a high end education from a prestigious university.
  18. I have no idea about the scale of your GPA. That being said and assuming you have a reasonable GPA, you have good chances for EE at ASU. Though ASU doesn't support his masters students. I am the only master student at ASU that I am aware of having Full Financial support as R/A in electrical engineering. I know couple of people supported on half appointments. Though, as I said, 90% of those I know are not supported at all. In Power Systems and Solid-State Electronics ASU is one of the bests. I have no idea about other deciplines within EE here.
  19. My info is just like yours. From our admission committees. Actually, one of the professors who is writing me LOR is the admission head of our Physics department. My adviser also believes in the same thing. Though, his name would do me the favor alone. :-) One thing I know for sure is that schools really differ in their application review process. Even from department to department within same school they follow different protocols.
  20. I think maybe we are looking from two different prospectives probably two different major (science vs. engineering) at the problem cause I dont know of any one rotating arround doing a master's thesis in engineering. In PhD that's different and yes I'v seen. in terms of forms vs. letters! well lets agree to disagree.
  21. I remember once one of the professors I was asking a LOR from for my MSc application told me "you should ask LOR only from professor who you have done research with" ... and well ... I couldn't stop laughing at his logic for weeks ! How many professor are you supposed to do research with in 1 year or 2 ?! If you are doing a nice job and you are being funded you will be working for 1 person ! otherwise your knowledge would not be enough if you have swapped too many professors in your masters. That being said, it's completely natural ! people will look at your ADVISOR's LOR first ! that's the person who can evaluate your research skills ! The rest would judge you on other aspects. I don't know if you have seen a LOR form or not but there are many questions there 25% percent of which are really related to your research ! there are even questions about honesty and personal habits like being social !!! If you haven't done any research in your Masters though, that's a different catastrophe !! then probabely the LORs are the last things you should be worried about
  22. Well in my personal opinion, your situation is not any different from most of other applicants. Even students with masters degree have done probably the same period of research as you, except probably more intense and focused and with solid results (since they have to defend it in the end). That being said, I don't think the timing is your problem but the problem is the recommendation content. When you ask a professor for a LOR and he agrees that's only 25% of the process. Specially nowadays that LORs are more like quiz tests which kills the flexibility of the professor and he must answer questions with binary logic ! either 0 or 1 ! ... so it really matters how they answer the question and whether if they leave any question of LOR form as N/A or not ! ok, now you have a prof. who is willing to write the LOR (of course it's not writing any more, it is filling) and he will do it pretty well. HERE COMES THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: WHO IS THIS GUY ? ... you know probabely any good program has more that 2000 applicants. That makes it about more that 6000 LORs to look at ! do you think people really care about LOR from sb they don't know ?! What about a LOR from sb the admission commity know personally or professionally !? here you are making an impact ! So those are the things you should really keep in mind while seeking for LORs
  23. Well, but with all due respect, when you are not getting funded on a project it means that there is not enough money for you. How it seems: the project was not funded well enough for the professor to support the working student meaning the project was not something either worthy or solely defined for that student. THOUGH, the Stanford brand should help you a lot in getting you somewhere very good.
  24. You can find really cool academic surrounding in BME in US universities. State of the art facilities and interesting research. THOUGH, finding a job in industry would be a nightmare for you!
  25. I dont really think that Unv.of Washington or Drexel are good school to spend application fees on. And of course they are really unreasonable in giving admission since they are having real economical problems as for now. They have both descended in ranking since 2012 in new USNEWS 2013.
