  1. I was talking to my fulbright adviser and she said that she heard that there are as many alternates for the research grant as there are grantees. so, it would be really helpful to find out where you are on the list.
  2. I also got an email today stating that I was moved from an alternate to principal candidate. But, thinking that I didn't get it and wouldn't hear for a long time, I already accepted a fully funded PhD program offer. I spoke to my school and they said that I probably could defer but that funding could not be guaranteed (and with the economy, things might change...) And, I can't attend a PhD program without funding. Plus, this program has great funding, and I love it and am excited to start. Suggestions???
  3. I'm going to grad school (PhD program in lit)
  4. Anyone else still waiting to hear from Rutgers? I called them several weeks ago and ended up talking to the Graduate Director of Admissions for 20/30 minutes. I basically called to see if I was rejected, but she said that I am definitely not rejected, and I'm one of their top candidates. However, they have already admitted several students and they are waiting to hear if they accept/decline and/or if they get more funding. So am I on an informal waitlist (I have received nothing in the mail or email) or was this just bs? Yet she proceeded to talk about my statement of purpose and other parts of my app. I would like to know before I accept another offer, but it's looking like I'm not going to. Anyone else in the same position??
  5. I received notice that I am an alternate for Germany ETA; however, I got 2 letters. One from Germany and one from New York (and the New York one was in a manilla envelope). Anyone else get 2 letters? Does that mean anything? Also, I second whoever asked how alternates work. Does every finalist either receive the grant or become an alternate, or are people actually flat out rejected? Just wondering.
  6. Has anyone heard from Germany?
  7. Has anyone still not heard from UCI comp lit? I emailed the secretary last Monday, and she said to check my mail box as notifications were sent out last week. Plus, I've seen both acceptances/rejections posted here. I only live an hour from Irvine yet still haven't gotten anything. Do you think it is ok to email her again, or would that be too annoying??
  8. My email was from Dr. Kinoshita, the director of grad studies in literature (but it seems like her focus is more mediterranean studies, which mine is not). I did receive a phone call from a professor but, I am ashamed to say, was so excited that I forgot her name (and forgot to ask her for it again until after I hung up). From our discussion, though, it didn't sound like she was going to be my assumed advisor, but maybe she didn't come out and say that since she was just notifying me of the dpmt's recommendation to the program?? Did any of you get a phone call?? I'm getting excited too. The visit is almost here!!
  9. If you decide to do this, please let us know. I might think about doing it as well.
  10. ILikeCatsALot's concern has crossed my mind too. Anyone with any thoughts/evidence for this or to the contrary of this??
  11. I spoke to the admin assistant at UMich and she said that she had a list that she would be emailing out within the next 24 hours.
  12. The 2nd appl I filled out was geared toward ETA's (requests of which of the Laender you want to be placed in, teaching experience, etc.) After I was notified I was a finalist, I was sent a link to the PAD (Paedigogischer Austauschdienst). I had to fill out another application (albeit much shorter than the original one) and then translate my Fulbright essays into German. I'm sure if there was a secondary one for the research, you would have been notified. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, you don't have to speak German if you're applying for a research grant, so having to fill out an app in German/write essays in German would be a little unfair. Where did you get affiliation to? Where do you want to go in Germany?
  13. Perdican-- Have you heard anything from UMich. I still haven't heard anything. I keep checking my Wolverine pg but nothing has changed.
  14. Never mind OD09; I answered my own ? by looking at previous posts (Iceland)
  15. OD09, What country did you apply to?? ETA or research??
  16. I applied in comp lit, but I haven't heard anything from UMich either.
  17. Couple of other questions: If you're named as an alternate, how much of a shot do you have at actually getting to go?? Anyone know the stats on that? Also, do they send you a letter if you're not accepted at all, or is it just the waiting game like for some of my PhD programs??
  18. congrats maisie112!! That is so exciting. Does anyone know if IIE will release our standings on their list?? I'm getting anxious now reading these posts. It's so hard to be visiting and planning to attend a PhD program next year (and possibly moving) yet also waiting to hear back from the Fulbright. Will anyone else defer if they receive the Fulbright; or, will you reapply and hope to get into a bigger/more prestigious program next year??
  19. I never got a letter in the mail, but i did finally get an email last week saying my status was updated online with the rejection letter attached.
  20. Has anyone heard from Rutgers, UCI, or UMich in Comp Lit; I know English has notified but haven't seen anything about Comp Lit yet. I'm thinking this means rejection but hoping not.
