Santa Cruz, Davis, UChicago--feelings?
Lisa replied to ILikeCatsALot45's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Don't have much to add, just that I was accepted to UCSC's lit program as well and am going up to the April 2/3 weekend. (I also got into UCR's comp lit and am waiting to hear back from UCI, Rutgers, and UMich, which at this point I'm assuming are all rejections. However, after reading the thread about the master's disadvantage, I'm really thankful I got accepted into 2 programs both with full funding. Plus, I've taught high school for 7+ years, which I've heard is considered a negative to some schools.) My major concern (along with getting a job after grad school) is cost of living; I've checked into some apmt's, etc. and it's pretty pricey (and I live in So. Cal right now and am used to expensive housing!). But then again, I'm giving up a good paying job to go back to school (and my husband would be as well), so I guess it's just hitting me a little hard right now. BTW, those of you visiting, are you staying with the grad students or in a hotel? -
Edgar, Have you heard when we find out for the Fulbright (other than sometime before May 15)? I know all the countries notify at different times, but I'm just getting anxious to know so that I can decide what to do. Will your programs let you defer and keep your funding??

My Tips for Reapplying
Lisa replied to DEClarke85's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
There are several good websites regarding the English Subject test. They were put together by students who took them. I forgot what they're called, but look in Google. There's one that even has a list of the most commonly tested works (as compiled from previous tests). These helped me focus a lot. And, I echo the person's advice to start now--especially if you don't have a large background in English lit--which I didn't. -
any recent news about rutgers in comp lit? does anyone know if all acceptances have gone out? the online status is still saying no decision. i wish they would just tell me already.

I haven't heard anything either from Duke. Please post if you call and they give you any info. I might call next week as well. -
I applied for an ETA to Germany. I was notified that I was a finalist on Jan. 30; another application was just due (on Friday) to Germany (in German, essays in German, etc.) I think this application is unique to Germany though. I have heard that Germany/Fulbright committee usually notifies by end of March/early April regarding their decision; however, I have also heard that some other countries take a lot longer to notify--even until mid May. Hope that helps! I'm hoping to know sooner rather than later so I can plan for next year--PhD program or Fulbright--and deal with deferment issues if necessary.

I asked a professor about deferrals and she said it depends on the reason. For me, I might defer only because I'm also a finalist for a Fulbright scholarship to Germany, and my intended degree is comp lit with a primary emphasis in German lit. The professor I spoke to seemed really excited for this possibility for me and said she can't imagine them not approving it. So, I guess some schools are open to it. If I get the Fulbright, though, I'm really torn on what to do. Both possibilities really excite me, but I hate to put off a phd program longer. I'll already be 29 when I enter. Yet, a Fulbright is such an amazing experience (if I in fact do get it). This is a little premature (since I haven't received the Fulbright yet), but any suggestions on what to do if I do. Take the fulbright and defer or reject the fulbright and go straight to grad school.

Yeah, I didn't get in either; but, it was my last choice. Plus, that was the only school I applied to in English and I didn't change my statement of purpose (which was very much comp lit based)--so I'm not surprised.

Anyone know if this is just for English or comp lit, too? -
I'm sorry! I'm really thinking I'm probably getting a rejection letter in the mail, too. I just think I would have gotten a call if it was positive.
-
If you go into your application and look at your actual application (I believe), there are 2 dates--one the date you submitted the application and one the last time it was modified. For a long time the 2nd date said sometime in early January, I'm sure when all my transcripts/info got processed. Yesterday I noticed that it now said modified on 2/23. So I'm assuming I'm getting some sort of notification (positive or negative) based on previous posts from others. Let me know if you still can't find the spot on your application, and I'll actually go to the web site and be more specific on how to find that part. Good luck!!

Well, my application was just updated yesterday. So I guess that means that my rejection letter is in the mail. =(

Has any heard anything from UMich? Especially from the comp lit program??
-
I just checked mine, and it's still saying "no decision." I hate this waiting!!

Does anyone know if all acceptances for Rutgers have been sent out? I'm still waiting for a reply either way. (And the website is still saying "no decision.")

I still haven't heard anything either. Please let me know if anyone finds out anything. -
I'm still waiting to hear from UCLA (comp lit).
-
has UCI notified for English, Comp Lit, or both??
-
That's what I was pretty much thinking; too bad!!

Did anyone else get an email from UC Irvine saying to make sure to fill out the FAFSA form by March 2 and put their code in it? I'm still waiting to hear and was hoping, just maybe, this was an auspicious sign. More likely, it's probably a standard reminder to all applicants, whether they are accepted or not. Any thoughts??

I haven't heard anything from UCLA either. (I applied comp lit.) My page still says "no decision." And yes, I check it compulsively, too. In fact, I should be doing my work right now, not reading all the posts on here. =) I'm also still waiting for Duke (lit). I saw on another post that someone called Duke and the secretary said they go through their apps alphabetically. My name ends with a S, so maybe they're getting to it and going to send me an acceptance letter/email?!! UCLA, too?!! I can only dream, I think!
