Starting Our Own (Inspired by Zoberg and Recycled Viking)

Wow...It must be my lucky day. After writing thesis I was certifiable myself and scored a 1600 out of 800 on the SMT If my people aren't in jail...per say...but are locked in basements...does that count? -
I honestly thought this was true...but then managed 72 hours on caffeine without so much as a grumpy word or a yawn. In fact, I was in a better mood when I went to class on Friday morning than I had been three days previous because I felt like I'd gotten more done! WEIRD. I'd hate to admit it, but I think I'm actually enjoying this weird thesis-writing sub culture that we have in my department where we keep each other awake (with occasional 1/2 hour naps on the GA futon) and kick out assignment after assignment. Too many deadlines all at once not to, though. My thesis is actually much improved over when I was writing this. I finished the second (much improved) draft of my third chapter and have only the intro and concluding chapters to write before the 20th. Not bad, not bad. I imagine I'll kick out one more draft of the chapter I just finished...the other chapters were already quadruple drafted. I thrive on academic pressure...its real world pressure I buckle under.

oooooh...enroll me in 607 immediately please. I've heard its cross listed with Human Rights Studies 715: How to commit atrocity and get away with it. tehee. -
Ouch! The competitive nature of siblings can be cruel. Competitive families can be cruel sometimes anyway (my own family has never appreciated my poor university, and I am constantly getting chided for not shooting higher for my MA program...thankfully they're being a little more polite about my current situation.). Here's hoping you get into some place awesome--if not this round, then next year. In fact...I'd place money on you getting in to someplace better than she got into next year  If all else fails, head over to the Waiting board and join us at GradCafe U. Our stipend is meager (only $180 grand a year) but we do give bonuses of border collies and shortbread cookies...and we offer great classes like Brewing Mead and Controlled Arson. You're automatically accepted! Bet that's something your step-sister can't say!!

I'm beginning to agree with this sentiment entirely. Honestly, I walked outside yesterday and took a look at the most beautiful blue sky I've seen in ages. And it occurred to me that I have been in college a combined total of 8 years between 2 bacc's and a master's and I can barely remember any of those 8 years because I've been working so damned hard. Maybe a year off would mean I could actually pay attention to the sky once in a while. ::sigh::

one school left and praying for a miracle... lol

:x :x Look guys...for some departments Ivy league IS a safety school. My letter writers wouldn't even touch some of the state schools I tried to apply to--the job market is so nasty that anything but a first-tier school supplied PhD means total lack of hire-ability which means that you've just wasted six years of your life to get a piece of paper that just priced you out of almost every other job on the planet. ESPECIALLY in the humanities. :!: Cut BigCheese some slack here. :!: On that note, I'm at the point where I've just gotten apathetic about my three remaining schools. I expect they'll all reject me and I'm actually okay with it. After checking your other rejects I don't feel so bad about my own--since a lot of them match. You're in good company BigCheese...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. -

We have an art history section...no art section yet. Go for it. Doodling should cross-list with the Psych department listing: Psych 730: You saw WHAT in the ink blot? -
I. finally. ended. my. pity. party.

::round of applause for Yellow#5::: Completely agree here. I find that I worry less about what I'm not getting (a PhD...apparently) when I work with kids, who really don't care what you have anyway. "You went to college!" they stare at me wide-eyed... Oh yes, hun. Went to college. And all I got was a bumper sticker. Then they look at the bumper sticker and get all giddy. Suddenly we start talking about how cool it is to be able to have THAT bumper sticker. Which...of course...is red. And fits so nicely on the window. And calls me that really great word "alumni" which the kids repeat twenty times because it sounds so different. They act like the dictionary definition for alumni is "goddess of everything knowledgeable" Suddenly I don't mind my life anymore. Funny how kids can remind you your glass is actually half-full. Much thanks for helping me end my own pity-party Yellow#5

Add to that freaking out, crying, hating the world, and then finally apathy.

add to that "How to not waste your day on social networking sites when you have a project due for Viking's controlled arson class". I'd hate to see the punishment for screwing up there! -
...not to hand you misplaced hope...but don't be paranoid. A lot of the bigger schools refuse to give an indication one way or the other until all notices go out. Sometimes this is because they have a list of "second string" candidates who would get the spots if someone they accepted did not pick them (and will otherwise get a reject notice). Don't stress. March 15 is coming soon enough

With 3 credits of required napping per semester as well! -
aww Jasper, I understand completely. I'm dragging my tail on my thesis right now. sigh
-
That is actually a very good point...we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves, but I think its totally reasonable to look at weak spots in our apps for when we start over next year
-
I am certainly glad to know that I'm in the company of some awesome scholars who also should be accepted. It has just been a bad year for this stuff I guess.

You win some, you lose some... At least the waiting will be over soon

I've almost begun to accept rejection as a state of mind... Sad as that is, I almost wasn't even affected by the last one that just came in. I'm sure it'll hit me this summer... When I'm out of things to do.... And I'm not moving for grad school.... But right now... ...I think I'm becoming immune.

Has anyone heard from brown, brandeis, mit, northeastern?

Just heard from Brown. Big fat 0. -
Because it is late and I need a thesis break, I thought I'd come up with the top ten ways to tell you've been rejected. Feel free to add...its all in good fun. TOP 1O SIGNS YOU'VE BEEN REJECTED... 10. You call the university but they've mysteriously disappeared off the face of the planet. 9. The administrative assistant for the department starts suggesting that you look for housing...in the next state over. 8. You get an an envelope with a piece of paper that says, "Dear Totally Unqualified Applicant..." 7. It is September and you still haven't heard back. 6. A huge press release surfaces that claims that the university is interested in international students...but only wants the ones from Namibia. 5. You call and the administrative assistant can't stop laughing. 4. When you check the status site your profile comes up as, "hidden in the basement" 3. Your would-be chair shakes your hand during the interview process and says, "Aren't you the kid who I caught my son/daughter drinking with in high school?" 2. Your calls to the department mysteriously disconnect whenever the administrative assistant goes to look up your status. 1. You realize that the applicant pool included the Prince of Wales, Jenna Bush, and Angie Jolie.

Emilee, hun, you can come by my house. I will stock you up with good wine...you'll be so happy that you'll be writing them thank you letters for turning you down. Give me three hours and a platter of cheesecake and I promise you'll be totally signed on to the idea of cross country trucking and totally turned off to grad school...you never know, it could work!

I suppose that I will have to be in charge of practical human rights application at the university, just to be sure that Recycled Viking is only mean to the people who deserve it... Like the marauders who suggested that our funding should be cut. They're about to pay dearly, I'd imagine, in short bread cookies and Border Collies. On the human rights agenda of course will be the following coursework: 701: Intro to the futility of the United Nations as a governing body 716: Bad genocide humor and other things required to study atrocity 750: The wisdom of Gandhi, Mandela, and Kermit the Frog with regards to caring for other people 830: Your Mother Was a Hamster and Your Father Smelt of Elderberries! Sufficiently Taunting People who Commit Atrocity and the capstone 899: Planning a Charity Concert with the help of Bono, John Mayer, and George Clooney. Extra Points for Actually Donating the Money to a Worthy Cause. -

Are you kidding? ONLY $180 G's? That's sad, man. I'm going to have to really consider this. Good thing I have until April 15. Perhaps we can do a bit of creative negotiation. I'll take your acceptance (with tuition and stipend) and raise you an instant full-professor-ship upon graduation.
