  1. so I'll probably be going to CMU, but I've heard good things about the gTech HCC program.
  2. I applied to two programs at a school and was admitted to both. I think that it probably depends on the school.
  3. I studied a ton over the summer. Barron's and Kaplan make good sets of flash cards and all the companies make decent books. I bought like 6 or 7 books and just worked through them.
  4. Hey So the whole trip ended up being cancelled because of the weather and by then I'd decided not to attend the program anyhow, so it all worked out.
  5. I just got into GTech and it seems that for my program (Human Centered Computing) the visit weekend is 28th- 30th (right after CMU's).
  6. I just turned down UW PhD, so hopefully they'll be accepting someone else.
  7. From a methodological standpoint, the specific field rankings are poorly collected and represented. For the sciences, they simply reflect how other programs view each other. All of the specialized rankings, beyond the general categories, are based solely on how different programs rank each other. The general rankings (under the general headings of "Engineering" or "Physics") are comprised of a number of factors, which is why I think those are more credible.
  8. A bunch of the schools I applied to suggested the undergrad schools did matter, but not as much as other parts of your application. One guide I saw from Carnegie Mellon suggested that a GPA from a higher ranked school could be lower than one from a lower ranked school. But it probably depends on your field.
  9. CMU visit is March 25th - 28th (for HCII at least).
  10. No. They said people would be sending me followup emails, but I haven't heard yet.
  11. I got into the HCII Phd Program today (i'm the result that said "I'm shocked" in the notes section).
  12. Hi My stats: 700 V 770 Q 5.0 AW approx 3.8 GPA from a top ranked college. 3 years research experience, 1.5 years TA experience. 1 publication, 1 submission.
  13. It was a PhD application. The email listed a bunch of times that were options for talking with professors. I withdrew the application because I have decided to attend another university.
  14. I just got an email the other day from Illinois asking to schedule a time to talk with faculty, but I decided to withdraw my application.
  15. Hi I was admitted to Michigan, I was accepted about a week ago. My area is Human-Computer Interaction and I applied with a bachelor's degree (which I am finishing now). To be fair, I've had a lot of experience being a TA and RA at the school I attend.
  16. My boyfriend and I both wrote the names of professor we wanted to work with into our SOP and had no problems with our applications. So, while it might vary by department, I wouldn't worry too much. Best of luck!
  17. watching the olympics.

  18. My boyfriend and I were also in this situation. We decided not to disclose this info to schools until we had both been admitted. Luckily, it all seems to have worked out.
  19. Hi So I'm assuming you were flying to UCSD? I'm headed there tomorrow as well, and I have no idea if my flight will be canceled. Either way, I'm sure they will be understanding about rescheduling or doing interviews over the phone/skype.
  20. Thanks for all the info. I'll wait a bit and then see if I can get an extension.
  21. No, I haven't. Thanks for the suggestion, I had no idea that was even possible.
  22. Yesterday I got an acceptance to one of the Ph.D. programs I applied to. In the letter, the program said that they wanted me to tell them by February 15th (at the latest) whether I am going to enroll. I am definitely interested in enrolling at school, but I don't think I can make a decision by the 15th. Any advice?
  23. I was invited to a visit/interview at a school I applied to. In order to go, I'd have to miss several days of school and incur penalties to my grades as a result. I'd like to turn down the trip, but I don't want the school to think I'm not interested. Any thoughts?
  24. My SO is applying to the same schools as me. With any luck we'll both get into a school we both like. If not, we'll probably work and apply again next year.
