I guess I'll bump this thread for Fall 2011! Right now it looks like I'll be heading to Teachers College in the Fall, though I'm not 100% sure yet. I'll be in the Arts Administration program. Anyone else in Arts Admin or TC in general?

Right now I'm a resident of Texas, which for the purposes of income taxes, is fantastic (Texas has none). However, I am looking at going to New York for school, and chances are pretty good that I will be working while I am there. If I work in New York, does that mean I'll be required to pay taxes in New York even if I maintain my Texas residency? I'm very confused about this because I stayed in state for undergrad (California native, went to UCLA), and it was obvious that I lived and worked in California and thus paid California taxes. Ugh!

I just got into Teachers College, and I'm trying to figure out where I should be looking for apartments. I've pretty much ruled out most of Manhattan (though if there are any affordable areas I don't know about, please enlighten me!), and I can't really tell what'll be moderately affordable with a reasonable commute. Help, please!

I have been going insane waiting to hear from my last three programs, which are incidentally my top choices. In case I don't get in, I started to make arrangements for the Admitted Student Weekend for my top choice that I have heard from so far. And as I get ready to visit and look at opportunities in the area, I realize that no matter what happens, I'll be somewhere great starting this August. Things will be okay.

I've been living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for about a year now. It's definitely not a bad place to live, just very different culturally. On the plus side, people are generally extremely friendly, cost of living is very reasonable, and (at least where I am) there is quite a good cultural scene. As far as negatives, things tend to be very spread out, and people can be a bit closed-minded and old-fashioned. It's just a different energy than California. The weather can be stiflingly hot and humid, and I find the landscape rather flat and bare (though that varies, I'm sure-- Texas is a big place).

Haha, I was going to say the same thing, with the exception being that I won't be there next fall, but graduated from the English dept. there.

Thanks! I'm from Los Angeles, too. I wonder if we know any of the same people. :-)

Really sad about my decision...
theatrehippie replied to lost-in-interpretation's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Oh my goodness, yes! I haven't actually turned anyone down yet because I am still waiting on some funding results and admissions decisions, but I just feel awful as it is that I can't go to all of the schools that I applied to/have been admitted to. I genuinely want to go to all of them for various reasons. I know I will be happy with whatever my final choice is, since I didn't apply anywhere that I didn't truly want to go, but that makes choosing between them that much harder. -
I may be misremembering, but I believe that's the case if you take the test twice. Any more than that, and they begin to average your scores. Though schools may have different policies on that...

I haven't been accepted yet, but if I am, I'll send you a PM! I'm applying for the Theatre Management MFA/MBA (so I am waiting to hear from the drama school and SOM), love dogs, and have a background in English lit. When are you heading to New Haven?

Thanks! That is really helpful. Are there any other areas that you'd particularly recommend? How would you suggest going about finding a place? Is Craig's List the best place to start?

I currently have three offers that I am considering, with varying levels of financial support. School A (which is my top choice of the schools that I have heard from) has offered me $11,000 tuition/semester, which is great, but leaves me responsible for approximately $16,000 tuition per year. School B has offered me a 22.5% tuition fellowship (tuition is approximately $20,000/year), and I am under consideration for other awards (not sure when I will hear about those). School C has not offered me anything formally, but said they would "be on the lookout" for fellowships for me. They also gave me a credit waiver (not really worth much). Should I let Schools B and C know about the funding I've been offered at School A, or should I wait for the complete funding packages from them first? Or, should I wait until I have heard from schools D, E, and F? Also, since School A is my current best option, if B or C increases my funding, is it gauche to ask them to increase in turn (since though they have given me the most money, they still manage to be the most expensive option)?

I had interviews at all of my top choices, though I haven't heard from them yet. These programs are also the most difficult to get into, and I'm kind of shocked that I managed to get an interview for each of them. But that said, I'm terrified that it won't work out (my first choice will accept 7, interviewed 19, and had over 60 applications). I will become a zombie until I get home, at which point I will lie on the futon watching TLC with my dogs, and then send my boyfriend on a quest for coffee cake that resembles the kind I used to get in LA when I was up all night working on papers. Since I'm in Texas, and Ralphs (where I got the coffee cake) doesn't exist here, it will be a formidable challenge.
