Looks like I won't be attending UMich after all. Applied for a dual degree and only got accepted into SNRE not mech eng, and I don't want to risk not being able to pick up the other degree further down the track. Also don't think my bank account could handle Mich with no funding Off to Cali or Vancouver for me! Good luck everyone!

Thanks for all that info, Fauxtog. I am STILL waiting to hear from USC (my app has been under review for soooo long!), but it's probably my top choice, so I'm already dreaming of living in LA and your posts were so helpful. Fingers crossed!

The University of California conducted a study on the body scanners which was released on Monday: http://archinte.ama-...ernmed.2011.105 I probably make a return flight on average once a month, and have yet to go through one of the body scanners - they seem to pick every third/fourth/fifth person, and everyone else goes through the metal detector. But yes, they should probably do more testing before the body scanners become the sole method of screening at airports. For now though, considering flying itself exposes you to much more radiation than the scanners, going through a body scanner very occasionally is not a health risk (as it says in the study).

Thanks for your help! Yes, I'll get in touch with Canada school and see what can be done. Don't like my chances though - the email says something about no delays or changes to the deadline allowed. Hmmm. I was pretty shocked when I read in the email that they needed a $1000 deposit - and they have only given 10 days for this to be organised and mailed to them from the other side of the world! The school is UBC, and the program is a professional master's, so the fees are higher than most programs (although still considerably lower than the US schools I applied to). It is taken off the total tuition, but still, $1000 with 10 days notice! blah. I'm excited though - really didn't expect this acceptance! Just waiting on the last school and then I can finally make a decision and get on with things!

I thought I would start this thread to get the advice of anyone who has been in a similar situation. I just got accepted into a Canadian school for an MEng, and they require a deposit of $1000 (!!!) by April 4th in order to hold my place (there is no accept or decline - you either send the deposit or not and that acts as the accept/decline!). I am still waiting on one school in the US (an MS in engineering), and I really doubt that I will hear from them before April 4th (especially since most of their decisions, both acceptances and rejections, are sent by post). This US school is probably my top choice, and the Canadian school my second choice. If the deposit for the Canadian school was only a few hundred $, I would probably just pay, but $1000 is a lot, especially if I end up going to the US school and it just goes to waste! Should I ask for more time from the Canadian school? I called the US school last week, and they won't tell me much about my application. Should I call again?

I was also admitted into SNRE Sustainable Systems. International Student Undergrad majors: Aerospace Engineering, German Undergrad GPA: ?? (I graduated with second class honours A) GRE (V/Q/W): 550 / 790 / 4.5 Years out of undergrad: one and a bit Work experience: aerospace engineering internship, undergrad research assistantship (1 conference paper), no work experience in environmental field (actually very little experience in environmental/sustainability field in any form, so I was surprised I was admitted!) LOR: research/thesis advisor (engineering), German professor, internship supervisor (all know me well) I actually applied to do a dual degree with mechanical engineering (Engineering Sustainable Systems), but have yet to hear back from the mech department. So I'm not sure if I will end up at Michigan. I'm also unsure if I could survive living in a small-ish town with freeeeezing winters - anyone care to convince me otherwise?!! I mainly applied to other sustainable engineering programs: Imperial College London - MS in Sustainable Energy Futures - conditional offer (1/26) UBC - MEng in Clean Energy - waiting USC - MS in Green Technologies - waiting UW - MS in Mechanical Engineering (Energy and Environment concentration) - waiting Queen Mary, University of London - MS in Sustainable Energy Systems - waiting The waiting is driving me crazy! And I don't think I'll hear back from any schools for another couple of weeks either. blah. Anyway, good to meet other SNREers.
