  1. I'll be taking two courses next term (one of which will be an intense reading course) and am interested in auditing two others. Do any of you seasoned grad-schoolers think that to audit two will be too much? From what I understand, both professors will expect me to do the readings show up and contribute something substantial (as they should, no?), but I do not believe I will be asked to write any papers, give presentations, etc... So many interesting courses, so little time. Thanks for your input!
  2. For some reason it seems to throw them which is not my intent either.
  3. I'm in my first year of my MA and have been told by my professors to call them by their first names. However, I like the 'familiarity gap' that exists with calling them 'Dr. whatever'. I do not know if this is because I am a female and want to keep these relationships strictly professional (it is no secret that there has been some foul-play in the department in the past). But I am there to obtain my degree and grow academically, nothing more. That being said, I do not want to offend anyone. Any advice here? Thanks!
  4. If you're willing to study outside of the states the University of Western Ontario has an excellent Migration and Ethnic Studies program that is interdisciplinary. You must apply to a discipline in the social sciences: sociology, anthropology, history, etc and then, if accepted, you are eligible to join the program. I am a newcomer to the program and am very excited about getting involved; it looks like they provide some excellent opportunities (not to mention funding; I am an international student but received a full scholarship!). Also, because it is interdisciplinary I will have the chance to explore ideas from viewpoints that are not specific to my field. Intriguing stuff. )
  5. I am attempting to put together a reading list focused on critical theories of dissent. I am essentially starting from scratch (with very little background knowledge in this particular area) and would very much appreciate anything you would like to recommend, be it anything you have read in the past or something have heard great things about. Thanks!
  6. Masonville, North London, Near West, Kipp's Lane, Whitehills- but good luck finding anything here, Old South. Transit is great from the Masonville area.
  7. I concur...We Londoners like to call it 'EOA', or, East of Adelaide. You know it's serious when it gets an acronym.
  8. Yep; anything near 'richmond row' is a bad idea. It's essentially vegas for undergrads. Although it's not exactly close to campus, Wortley Village seems to be great. Unfortunately, I've had no luck with anything right next to campus like I had been hoping for.
  9. I'm an American hoping to pursue a PhD in Sociology in Canada in the future. However, in an attempt to understand the Canadian university system I'm hoping to compile a list of the best universities for Sociology. I've been searching for a list online but all I've found is McCleans which rates universities as a whole, not departments nor graduate level programs specifically. Any feedback you guys have would be helpful, thanks!
  10. Hey, I attended UWO for my undergrad and will be back for my MA in the fall. I'm also concerned about finding a rad apartment; it seems like everything close to campus is undergrad student ghetto-ish (read: NOT so study friendly). Does anyone know if there's a 'designated' grad student area? Thanks!
