  1. If you're trying to do a stepping stone to a PhD in Econ (or a terminal degree) I think you are better off doing an MS in Stat rather than Applied Math. App Math is closer to Quant Finance IME.
  2. Presuming NCSU gave you funding, you'd be completely insane not to accept this offer (all else being equal-- you like the dept, location, faculty, students you've met, etc.)
  3. Any school that takes itself seriously will expect you to have thru Calc III, an intro to linear, an intro to proof writing, a year long sequence in Prob/Mathematical Statistics, and a year of Analysis to be admitted as a PhD student. The Analysis might be optional but definitely expect to have to take it during your first year if you enter without it.
  4. I will be turning down my offer from UC for a PhD offer from Ohio State. That said, my sense is that the MSc program at UC is a better option for PhD prep than the App Stat program at Oxford. The Oxford program seems to be more of a professional degree program whereas almost half the students coming out of the UC program end up going on.
  5. I would look at language requirements at these departments as well. Though my guess is if you are a native Spanish speaker your French is probably pretty decent as well. For example, UW does not have one.
  6. They are completely different things. The only thing they have in common I guess is that both require you know math through about your year-long undergrad Analysis sequence. That's it. MFE programs are PROFESSIONAL degree programs, not preparation for PhD programs in those areas, let alone pure math.
  7. I'll be committing to Ohio State in the next week or so.
  8. I decided to complete a Math major after 2 years of college, having not taken Calc 2 since Junior year of high school. It was hard at first but it's like riding a bike. You'll be alright but definitely don't go in cold turkey.
  9. I have acceptances from U Chicago, Mizzou (App Math), Texas A&M, OSU, U Washington (App Math) and am still deciding but will most likely choose OSU. Btw, most of those are Masters acceptances.
  10. I was rejected from Oxford in late Feb and accepted to UC last week for what it's worth.
  11. It's a massive department, I enjoyed it quite a bit on my visit, and Columbus is a perfectly fine city. On the other hand it is not as highly regarded as regional competitors such as UM and UC.
