First off, THANKS GUYS!!!!!!! It warms my cold, dead heart to see so many people excited for me.

Second, apologies for not replying to you sooner, marxistglue, but I began partying my eyebrows off as soon as I got off the phone yesterday and forgot how to computer.

All I know is that decisions HAVE been made; my POI said the process was intense and admissions were extremely competitive this year, and indicated that "the cohort this year is amazing". So if you receive an acceptance know that the admissions committee thinks you're hot shit, first of all. He also told me that this was an "unofficial" acceptance because the college needs to take a final look at the committee's picks, but that this was really an administrative formality and that paperwork was on its way. I think he was calling me because he's my POI and that's what he wanted to do, not because everyone was calling their students yet. Judging by the admissions results from last year I'm guessing I just got an early preview and that everyone else should hear next week (unless your POI also wants to call you).

Other than that I got nothing! I am SO excited to be moving to Amherst, though I think (from the OBSESSIVE research I've been doing which was luckily NOT in vain) that I want to live in Northampton. I'll have to learn how weather works, but it's a challenge I'm willing to take on

Thanks for the info! I didn't get a short list email, but my POI did also email me a very thoughtful CFP (very specific to my topic) after telling me the committee was still deliberating, so I'll just assume I'm hanging out somewhere in purgatory or that this POI is just super nice and thoughtful even to students the program isn't taking.

In the past they've done an interesting ranking system at CUNY where the faculty go through the applicants and assign numbers to candidates, then they score and rank - rankings could be based on things as varied as whether they know or trust the letter writers, where the student studied before, how good a fit they are for the whole department, the impression they give from in person meetings, phone calls, and such, and even things like whether the student has money and can self-fund. If they're asking people if they're still interested and such, they probably have that list almost done and are trying to figure out who the top X number of candidates are which will then get funding offers. They expect a certain number of those will decline because they are top candidates so they also probably got into several top schools. Then they'll go down and make offers to people lower on the list, and so on.

So, i wouldn't assume that the admissions process is very cut and dry - there isn't really a moment when they're done with decisions and the offers are locked in, but rather they're always changing and can be impacted at any time by many things. They want to feel out whether students are still interested becuase they also make or don't make offers based on the likelihood that a person will accept the offer!

Beware, one must first earn an MA at NSSR and only after the fact reapply for the PhD. It's a pretty brilliant way to just get students to pay for the MA.

See...here's the thing about GRE scores.

This is my 3rd year applying. THIRD!!! And you wanna know what my GRE scores are? 167 Verbal, 162 Quantitative. So....kinda high. One of the POIs who rejected me last year said I had literally the highest GRE scores of all applicants to the program. Did it make a difference? No. No it did not. I have a feeling that unless your GRE scores are absolutely abysmal (as in, you typed in your social security number, mike-dropped, and then noped up outta there) you probably don't need to worry about the GRE.

Do any of the repeat offenders remember that poster from last year, who was a faculty member, who was ranting about how annoying it was when prospective students contacted them? It's buried in the archives somewhere, but they basically said that instead of telling applicants "you weren't good enough" or some other variation thereof, they would indicate that they were rejected because their applications were incomplete. I have a feeling that "your GRE score was too low" is just a different version of that. I don't want to deal with the responsibility of explaining why I rejected you, so I'm just going to say your GRE is too low, because you're gonna think that's some kind of auto-fail and it's easier for me that way.

UPenn is in the midst of decision making and results should be out soon.  Some of the profs do interviews and some don't and some of the profs contact their new students and some don't, so the results might not all be at the same time.

Ah, but you had an interview so of course they would send you a nice proper notification! Sorry to hear that -- luckily Michigan is a pretty big feather in your cap. Congrats again!

To the brave poster with the NYU rejection, was your notification solicited?

Also, do you guys ever think: what if we are somebody's fieldwork?

Hi! I'm a long-time lurker; I'm not the official admit, but was contacted by the department and asked to send my transcripts ASAP so that they could send their recommendation to the GSAS; my POIs were cc'd. Am hoping that this bodes well after lots of dread and disappointment, but at the same time, it adds another dimension which complicates my (angsty, pessimistic) decision to stick it out on the East Coast with my partner, who was admitted to numerous PhD programs (the tribulations of "two bodies," I suppose). Best of luck to us all--this community has been a great refuge despite my silence.

As far as I know, CUNY hasn't moved yet officially. Last year I got my rejection from them on 2/10. I was sweating yesterday, that's for sure.

Has anyone else not heard ANYTHING from ANYWHERE? I mean...I'm assuming that Cornell and Berkeley are nos, since some people have posted acceptances for both, but other than that I'm getting 100% radio silence. I mean, perhaps it has something to do with the relatively late due dates for my schools (January 1st or later)? And I guess hearing nothing with nothing posted in the results is better than hearing nothing while other people have results....but really though? Really?

I don't believe regular Columbia anthro (not SMS or anthro and education) has a formal interview process, but they often have POIs individually contacting students to chat. I had a rather doom-and-gloom meeting with a POI in the fall (not a lot of hope for medical anthropology at Columbia) and she explained it a little to me. Let's all just keep crossing our fingers!
