  1. I have now voted for computational linguistics because some of my work will involve a lot of computation as my work will be mathematically oriented since I come from a Physics background. The work at OSU, if I get the funding for which I've been nominated, would be heavily computational.. The funny thing is I've not done much on a computer except plot stuff on MATLAB and some elementary coding. I don't have an inclination for coding but if the work demands it, I'd be willing to do some. The work at NWU won't be so heavily computational but surely will involve computational work as well. If you mean computational linguistics in the sense of say research on how a software could be written to check for plagiarism by string comparison techniques, statistical averaging over the entire plagiarized term paper, etc, that's not something I'd like to do. I would however be interested in the concept of "plagiarizing of an idea" and how one could computationally recognize this. Excuse my ignorance if I do not quite capture the essence of what people normally mean by "computational linguistics".
  2. THanks for the advice! I think I understand. If I decide to go to Northwestern, I think there are quite a few good ug options she could try out!
  3. Hi, I'm from India and have been accepted to Northwestern Linguistics and am awaiting decisions from Psych Depts of OSU, Minnesota twin towers, Berkeley, McGill, McMaster and Rochester BCS. My wife will accompany me on aF2 visa. She has completed her masters in physics (me too) and would like to study painting now. She has been painting for a while now but only by looking at other photos/paintings, etc. She is now working on originals.. I do not know anything about MFA programs.. How should one go about preparing for a MFA application? How do you build your portfolio and what other skills would you need (critical theory, etc..) to satisfy entry requirements for a MFA? Also which of the above universities would offer good opportunities for painting as well? Any advise woulde be appreciated.. She would spend as much time as possible prepaing and maybe apply to a MFA program after a year or so..
  4. Rejected at first instance but a few professors got together to nominate me for some other funding. Result will be out on Mar 10. :x

    ETS

Since when does the University of California system agree? I have applied to UCSD, UCD and UCB, all of which require the GRE. Students like me from India find it difficult to spend so much on the GRE and the amount ETS charges for every additional report. $20 for GRE and $17 for Toefl, that makes it $37 for each school. I've applied to 13 programs. Add the original GRE and TOEFL fee to that. When you convert this to Indian Rupees, it comes out to be equivalent to almost thrice my mother's monthly income (but I had enough money saved from my internship to pay for all this but am bankrupt now) but I guess its a price we have to pay to get into the wonderful graduate educational system that the US has built carefully and painstakingly over the years which also involves the American tax payer's money.. So its fair, only that I think $20 for an additional report is too much for a middle/working class Indian student.
  6. I see that you are to be interviewed by BCS Rochester, congrats! I got into the Linguistics program at Northwestern too. I am an Indian student with an undergraduate background in Physics. Northwestern appreciated my research experience because I'd been analyzing music using concepts of Physics and the Complex Systems Institute at NU does exactly that and they have a strong collaboration with the LInguistics Dept. So you are right, its the research experience part that they give most weightage to. I have applied to the BCS dept at Rochester too and haven't heard from them for a long time. One of the professors had emailed me in reply to an informal email with my CV and writing samples that I had sent him before I'd applied and expressed great interest in my application but I've never heard from any of them since. Would you know if BCS Rochester has released their first round of offers as yet? I've also applied to Psychology depts of Berkeley, Minnesota twin towers, OSU (awaiting funding decision), McGill and McMaster (got an informal email from a prof telling me that she'd recommend my name for admission). So if anyone's got offers from any of these places, please let me know.. Its agonizing to be in the dark after having submitted the applications 2 months back!
  7. Hey everybody, I'm an international student experiencing the agony of waiting for admission decisions from grad schools. I have been admitted to the only Linguistics program I had applied to (Northwestern) but I am awaiting results from the Psychology Depts of Berkeley and Minnesota (twin cities). I have also applied to the Behavior, Brain and Cognition psychology dept of Washington University in St. Louis. Could anybody tell me if these depts have released their first round of offers yet? OSU has and I was rejected at the first instance but some professors who were interested in my application nominated me for some other funds and those results will be out on the 10th of March. Could you also tell me how the cognitive research at these places rank according to you? (my research interests are language (semantics/pragmatics..evolution of language, etc) and music cognition and the parallels between language and music) Thanks!
  8. Hey guys, I'm an international student (Indian) with an undergraduate background in Physics. I plan to shift fields to Linguistics or Psychology (Language and Music Cognition, Parallels between the two, etc). I got accepted to the Northwestern Linguistics graduate program which was one of my top preferences. Waiting to hear from OSU (Psychology) who rejected me at first instance but some profs have got together and have nominated me for some other funds.. Also got a positive mail from a professor at McMAster Psychology dept (Canada). Eagerly awaiting Berkeley, Minnesota and Rochester Psychology depts. If I get accepted to one of those, there might be a *slight* possibility that I might reject NU (and dutchie can capitalize on that),.. Great forum here, got to know about this pretty late or I would have shared my agony during the waiting process here with fellow victims of the procedure
