  1. I posted something like this on the grad school forum in talk.collegeconfidential, but some bitch administrator deleted it before anyone could respond. now that's diligent fast work...

anyway, I'm just looking for information on what people changed in their applications. I know mine's probably going to be stronger due to the job experience I'm having now, and two more publications that's been delayed for like 3 months now. But in terms of references, GRE, GPA, essays, any info would be appreciated.

  2. marine bio might be a different situation. The national lab for which I'm still technically an employee sends out newsletters. One of those letters from the Lab Director indicate that our DOE has seen a 5.1% increase from 2013. "Fusion Energy Sciences" had 13.6% increase. etc. I'm assuming it depends on what your field is.

  3. at last.. an acceptance from UC Davis. Applied to 5 PhD programs, and ended up getting into a M Eng program. Didn't get the chocolate cake, but I'll take the hershey's kiss...

I was at work today, and the email sprung up to check my application status. I was like shit, that probably means I'm rejected. But no, it's technically an acceptance.

ok whatever, time to figure out if I'm going, and if so, who the hell's going to pay for it.

  4. I love this thread so much, but I never had anything to add earlier since my family is, by and large, cool with the idea of me going to grad school. However, now that I've made my decision I've had quite a few good ones come my way. MY dad wanted me to attend Pitt, which is in super easy distance of home, and he kept giving me ridiculous reasons not to go to UT Austin.

"Pitt is offering you a fantastic opportunity!" (Whereas Austin is offering me chopped liver?)

"You already know people in the department at Pitt! You'll have to start over again at Austin!" (because knowing people is the hallmark of research fit and program compatibility).

"You can never tell about people in the south." (I don't even...)

"There's the chance that some of your professor's might be racist; you don't want to go into that environment" (you know, because everyone in Texas is racist. Notwithstanding the fact that most of the faculty got their degrees in, and are probably from, the north!).

    And from the family friends:

"You're moving to Texas? Is your father going to let you?" (because it's not like I'm a grown adult who has lived almost entirely away from home for eight years now!)

people are nice in Texas, but there is some racial tension, imo. At work, all the white people hang out with each other.  I call it the white boy's club. But Ive heard austin is nice.

  5. Basically the absence of knowledge and inability to control the proceedings leads to anxiety. When I had applied for graduate study last fall, I was a nervous wreck the whole time, especially around February. And then I would receive the "We regret to inform you" email the one day I somehow forgot to check my email. Those days I wanted to smash the university to pieces and set off nukes, though I also realized my application needed more time to mature it's probably what killed me.

Actually : it's not even guaranteed whether professors will even read your email before you apply. They're overwhelmed with emails generally so unless you built a Death Star yourself or he/she knows you personally, there's really not much you can do. Except maybe cross your fingers but that doesn't generally help. It never worked for me.

Death Star you say? say I think I just might do that. Blow up some planets while I'm at it.. I mean shit, I need a hobby.

  6. +1 to faraday's comment. i'm really stoked! and i'm only here in SF for a half-year job, and i'll probably be moving at least once more for work before i go to missoula. i'm from nj/nyc, and— no offense to my home side/the (b)east coast, but — it's not for me, for many reasons. in the last year i've lived 6 different places, and SF is the closest i've come to feeling like i've found my place in the world. missoula seems like it'll have a mix of many things i like. :)

but, to answer the question: yes, i'm f-in' nuts, but mostly in good ways ;)

faraday: have you heard bowie's cover of "cactus" by them?

well I'm from the midwest... and it's not for me. tell me what about the east coast didn't you like? are people mean or something?
