  1. I cried for an hour after I made my decision today. I'm not sure what those tears were from? Relief? Sadness? Regret? I still don't know if I made the right decision, but at least I made a decision. Has anyone else cried like that? I think it was because I was picking between somewhere I really preferred/wanted to go to and a school that I knew I would be stupid to reject. In the end the one I picked was the safer choice. I guess in this case I went with my head rather my heart. I wish I could have been more brave...but what's done is done, and I'm starting my PhD next year
  2. Anyone have any advice for me? What about choosing between 1. an elite History department and 2. an interdisciplinary department that will allow me to get the same coursework/training in History (an MA) in addition to really great training in theory, ethnic studies, etc...? Both schools have really great advisers for me, and supporting faculty members. Also I would live in both cities (happily). Cost of living is probably about equal as well... In the context of the job market where so much is uncertain, do 20th century American historians really have much of a shot in this job market even if they're coming from an elite school? There will be hundreds of others like me nationally graduating with a PhD in History the year I finish. As opposed to a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary program that only graduates about 4/year? Which is the better bet? ugh, this is so tough :\
  3. goldielocks - it was nice to meet you at Northwestern, good luck with your decision! In other news, I got an admit to UC Santa Barbara today (via email from a POI)! I was really surprised because it's fairly late in the game. Also, I don't know what the heck is going on with UCLA...I don't have a rejection or acceptance or anything yet. Are they done making acceptances? I assumed that it was a rejection at this point (along with UCSB) but then this acceptance happened today. I don't think UCLA holds a waitlist, do they?
  4. They are done. The department visit is on Wednesday. Sorry
  5. Rejected from UCSD! Guess none of the Ethnic Studies California schools liked me Rejection email came at 3 am EST...kinda odd lol
  6. Ah! Congrats nix
  7. Brown and Yale...you're killing meeeee. Hopefully they post results tomorrow eeeek!
  8. I still haven't heard anything from UCLA, UCSB, or U Penn although several people have posted decisions from all of those schools...ugh -- just reject me already! haha
  9. I hope so, but I have no idea how to predict this stuff...seems to change every year.
  10. critical - Where else did you apply? Good luck, let's hope we both get into UCSD!!
  11. There's a Berkeley acceptance in the results search. Looks like all 11 were informed early February. I guess we can keep our fingers crossed for San Diego!
  12. Did anyone apply to any Ethnic Studies programs? I got an informal rejection from Berkeley via email from my POI, but haven't heard anything from UC San Diego yet...
  13. I got Advanced Korean
  14. I made the profile...but I still don't know if I've been googled? how can I tell?
  15. Just had the skype interview with NYU. They were interviewing about a dozen students to select the last of their admits, and from what I understood select a waitlist as well. The admission committee asked me to share where else I had been admitted. I told them truthfully and they said they found this information "very helpful." Does that mean they just crossed me off their list?
  16. No way! Congrats to her. I've never heard of it, but it sounds pretty awesome and extra money is always nice. The University Fellowship awarded was already good enough I thought, I can't imagine how thrilled she must be now.
  17. Speaking of USC and Yale...does anyone have any inklings about when we might hear back from either of them? Or how about Brown?
  18. Does anyone have any advice for interviews? This will be my first. What kinds of questions will the ad com ask?
  19. Both schools said that if the date doesn't work, I could come another day. I'm in the process of deciding which one to go to on the 1st and then which one to go to on a completely different date. Don't think I could make it to both on the same day considering one's in SoCal and one's in Chicago
  20. I think I'm going, although I'm not 100% sure as it's the same day as my Irvine visit as well.
  21. I guess nix was right. I just got an email from NYU. They said they're in the process of finalizing their selections and want to Skype chat with me...uh oh.
  22. Just heard from my POI @ Northwestern that they are not done sending out admissions letters and that I (and the others on here already accepted to NU) were in the first wave. There are three more waves going out in the next week! So if a decision has not been rendered on your file yet, you are still in the running! Good luck everyone!
  23. I crossed NYU off my list too...who is this reputable source?
  24. Thanks Safferz, that was helpful. Best of luck, I'm sure you'll get an offer soon Another thing I'm wondering whether or not makes a huge difference is cohort size? For example, Northwestern yields a class of about 15 and Irvine a class of 4. This makes Irvine seem like a much more intimate environment. Hmm, there are just so many variables to think about. I am also really drawn to the fact that California has no racial majorities on their campuses...You just can't find that kind of diversity in the Midwest! I've grown up in the Midwest my whole life, and could really use a change...hah
