  1. Grats Raypress! I am this close to applying in the fall of 2013. There is hope for moi! Good luck.
  2. Intro #1 And as a writer/anal person, explain how working in the clinic and interacting with the patient made you want to pursue a journalism degree. Don't state, explain and explain it very concisely. Otherwise, good luck!
  3. Good morning everyone, I want to apply to HCI graduate programs within the next 2 years but I feel like I don't have the right portfolio right now that will advance me into the field as well as win the hearts of the admissions committees. What type of side projects should I engage in? I'm in the process of developing Android/iOS apps as a side project. But I want to do something more challenging and innovative. Perhaps create a YouTube show that encompasses HCI and technology? What kind of projects do you think novice HCI professionals should work on? My mind craves more! Thanks! Christina Brown
  4. Is there any point in applying to this program if: 1.) Lack the programming experience 2.) but have the potential to prove to the faculty there that I will exceed beyond their expectations of their model of a successful applicant? I am in the process of researching research groups and professors I am interested in doing research with. So far, the Personal Robots, Fluid Machines, and Human Dynamics groups have caught my eye. By next week, I will email these people to learn more about the program. Any tips or advice? I'm interested in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction). Thanks.
  5. I'm planning on pursuing a M.S. degree in Computer Science, not a Ph.D program. But I will check out your links. Thanks.
  6. I'm interested in HCI. I said by Thursday because I created a rough deadline to talk to people about each program, but I may extend it til next week. I want to make my decisions before I take the GRE test (June 10th is the day I plan to take it).
  7. Hi everyone. (I'm so happy today). I need advise on how to construct general questions to ask program/department directors, current students, and alumni of the programs that I am interested in going in applying soon. What questions would you ask these type of people to get a well-rounded approach to how each program works. I hope to email everyone no later than Thursday. I need all the help I can get. This is the 2nd stage of my plan for graduate school domination hehe. Thanks!
  8. Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) I hear is also popular and blends with HCI and other disciplines. I think I found my sandbox playmate.
  9. I will be applying to grad school this fall and those who are also applying soon or will reapply in the near future, I would advise reading Donald Asher's "Graduate Admissions Essays: Write Your Way Into the Graduate School of Your Choice". So far, it is extremely useful in how I am approaching my schools. It is not all about crafting the best graduate school essay; its about crafting the strongest graduate school application possible. For the past 2 weeks, I have been on this site more times than I can count and I was just so bothersome to see how the best applicants with the stellar GPAs and research experience were turned down. I do not know if it was because it were not lucky or too many people applied with few spots at hand, but I also think in comes down to how WE market ourselves. Tip: Although I have not completed a graduate school application yet, don't list all your achievements in your SOP. Treat the graduate school process as your next potential job opportunity. Asher goes into detail about what happens to when admission committees reviews your application and what ways you can beat more qualified applicants. I'm heard stories of people who brought this book getting accepted to all their graduate school programs so I had to loan it from the library! I'm going to read the SOP part this week so I can start working on my SOP early. Thanks to the people above with the SOP advice. I will take that into consideration. Appreciate it. Good luck!
  10. Damian, you wrote that SOP and got accepted to Stanford and Rice?! What is your secret?
  11. So you have not accepted any offers yet? I would advise call each school on Monday and tell them politely and professionally the situation. Also check your emails for the next week. They probably received a lot of applications. Good luck!
  12. Tell them a Ph.D is like going to medical school to become a physician, many many many many years.
  13. Now you have to because you have save in during these uncertain times.
  14. Hi everyone. The name's Christina. I am in the process of applying to graduate school. One of my choices is Boston University's LEAP Program in the engineering department. At my alta mater, I did not study abroad and I want to try to do this as a graduate student because I want to make global connections with others outside my social space. Now I went to BU's Study Abroads Website and it states "Applications from graduate students must be accompanied by a letter of support from the Director of Graduate Studies for your program or from your faculty advisor." Does that mean that graduate students at Boston University are eligible to study abroad? If so, this would be amazing! Have any current BU graduate students or alumni on this site studied abroad and if so, how complicated was the application process? Thanks! Woot and grats to everyone on April 15th. I will be with you guys next year in academia!
  15. Check your profile here. I posted a comment. Looking forward to talking to you soon.
  16. Hi Inhmguiness! I am in the process of narrowing down my list of graduate schools and hopefully by next week, I will have a list of questions to ask you if you dont mind? Thanks! :)

  17. Thanks for the feedback. I am not planning on getting my Ph.D, just my Master's. As I narrow down my list, I will keep the subject test in mind and find out if it is recommended for non-CS majors.
  18. If your GRE scores are good, you don't have to take the GRE until for another 5 years.
  19. Could you tell more about your situation a year ago? I love stories.
  20. Even if the graduate school does not require a CS GRE Test? And you are probably right about AI. I'm going to research a little bit more on the field before I narrow down my schools. Thanks!
  21. I have taken classes in statistics and algebra in college and in high school. Machine Learning and Robotics so far interest me but I need to do more research before I can make my decision on what field of CS I want to pursue. Yea, I think its my liberal arts background that is kicking me in the butt right now ><. What interests about AI is how mobile devices and search engines are using AI to determine what we want based on our location in a region of the world or what our initial interests are for example. After graduate school, I plan to work in industry so AI may not be a good choice for me as you pointed out. I also heard stories of people switching specializations in a CS program for their Masters after getting in as well. I will keep my liberal arts background in check though.
  22. What was your score then?
