  1. I just got an email saying I am on the waitlist for the ThD at Duke. Hmmm... I guess this is a bit what purgatory feels like. Everyone else hanging in there ok? ____________ Accepted: Marquette (PhD, deferred from '09); U of Dayton (PhD, deferred from '09) Waitlisted: Duke (ThD) Pending: Yale (PhD); SMU (PhD); UVA (PhD) Rejected:
  2. Hi JulesM, Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was accepted at Marquette and Dayton last year but, due to family issues, deferred my decision to accept/reject their respective offers until this April. We'll see what happens with this new round of apps, but I'd be quite happy to wind up at either place. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify. Peace. ____________ Accepted: Marquette (PhD, deferred); U of Dayton (PhD, deferred) Pending: Yale (PhD); Duke (ThD); SMU (PhD); UVA (PhD) Rejected:
  3. Wait, who has gotten interviews and Duke and Yale? I can't find it in the previous thread. Thanks ____________ Accepted: Marquette (PhD, deferred); U of Dayton (PhD, deferred) Pending: Yale (PhD); Duke (ThD); SMU (PhD); UVA (PhD) Rejected:
  4. R.R. Reno has just posted his ranking of Graduate Programs in Theology/Religion in the journal "First Things". Here's the link: http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2009/10/a-2009-ranking-of-graduate-programs-in-theology So the question is, do you agree or disagree and by what criteria is your answer shaped?
  5. Hi JusticeYeti, I'm finishing up an MTS at Duke. What are your interests theologically? thumbnail72
  6. Well, that's all she wrote. I got a rejection email from UVA this morning. Ah, well. I hope you have better luck than me, studyordie. Peace.
  7. The official word from UVA is: "Everyone should be notified by the end of this month." My most recent inquiry resulted in that quote and a carefully phrased statement which said that no official letters of acceptance, waitlisting, or rejection had yet been authorized to be sent my way. I couldn't help but laugh at the intentional and unapologetic ambiguity. Gee whiz, what a crazy process this is! __________________________________________________________ Accepted: Marquette (no funding), U. of Dayton (tuition remission + stipend) Pending: UVA Rejected: Yale, SMU, Harvard, Duke (ThD), Emory, Chicago, PTS
  8. Just got rejected from Chicago. ...Maybe Taco Bell is hiring... __________________________________________________________ Accepted: Marquette (no funding) Pending: UVA and U. of Dayton Rejected: Yale, SMU, Harvard, Duke (ThD), Emory, Chicago, PTS
  9. I'm with you, studyordie. Given their (maddening) silence, I'm apparently waitlisted at UVA also. And I'm surprised not to have heard from Chicago yet, as well. At this point, though, I've pretty much resigned myself to trying again next year. I can't keep getting my hopes up every time I hear the mailman outside my door. If I get into either school, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but, in the meantime, I've had to force myself to move on emotionally (difficult though that is proving to be). Anyway, best of luck to you. Lord willing, we'll be put out of our misery soon (and hopefully in a good way). Peace.
  10. Seriously. I don't know how it is that their deadline is weeks ahead of most everyone else (12/3) and yet they're among the last to get back to us. Don't they remember the torture of their own past applications? God forbid I ever serve on an admissions committee - there is something hamartiologically suspect about such endeavors. ?
  11. Just out of curiosity, do any of the rest of you have zero information available when you check the status of your Emory application online? Mine has never reflected any of the things I sent in. I never got invited for an interview but have heard those are often for folks "on the bubble", as it were. Any solid acceptances/rejections out there, yet?
  12. Just got a rejection letter in the mail today for the PhD from Harvard. For those still waiting, I didn't get an email and there wasn't info on the website. ...I strongly suspect this is what purgatory will feel like...but perhaps not quite as tormenting. Accepted: Marquette (no funding) Rejected: Duke (Thd), Princeton Theological Seminary, Yale, SMU, Harvard (PhD) Pending: Emory, UVA, Chicago, Dayton

  14. I don't think we disagree, eskidd. Nice addendum.
  15. jcesarps, I got a letter from SMU in the mail yesterday (Saturday, Feb 28th) saying I was rejected. There was no email or website communication of their decision - just that horribly disappointing letter. Ugh. Anyway, I hope that helps. Best of luck. Peace.
  16. I guess the question is one of what one views the telos of a theological education to be. If, like me, one takes the vocational/academic ultimately to be subject to the doxological (specifically with regards to the Triune God named in Nicea), then such a one will rank say, Harvard with respect to CUA, somewhat differently than one for whom general academic prestige is the deciding factor. This is not to say that the vocational/academic isn't infused with the doxological; indeed, my point is precisely that such is the case. Where one goes to school and the purpose for which one does so is theologically significant, all the way down. But, of course, I'm a Dukie and student of Stanley, so you might expect me to say such things.
  17. Perhaps, mystic rose. But, rather than "conservatism", I think he's merely ranking those theology programs theologically. Those other things you mentioned he might not have considered are certainly important but they would seem to be less of a factor in a theological ranking of programs, an approach to ranking obviously of particular (and, hopefully, primary) interest to future theologians. Hence, CUA over Harvard because the former has a theological faculty the whole of which for whom the existence of God is not an open question, unlike the latter. See what I mean? Peace.
  18. I'd check out this: http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/?p=447 And also this: http://graduate-school.phds.org/ranking ... priorities
  19. Status Update: - an acceptance from Marquette for PhD in Religious Studies with no funding. - a rejection from Duke's ThD (where I am currently finishing an MTS) - a rejection from Princeton Seminary for PhD in theology - a rejection from Yale for PhD in Phil of Religion - a rejection from SMU for PhD in Theology Still waiting for Harvard (PhD), Emory, UVA, Chicago, & DAyton. Things are definitely not going to plan.
  20. eskidd, Would you mind giving us a few more details? Which concentration did your friend get in on? Did she find out today? Also, what search results are you referring to where someone said they got an acceptance? Just curious. Thanks.
  21. I emailed about Chicago's website and they said they'll be mailing decisions by the end of next week (the week of March 9th at the latest). So the official word is that the site is closed because they're in the final moments of the final stage. ...And so we wait.
  22. For those interested. I received: - an acceptance from Marquette for PhD in Religious Studies with no funding. - a rejection from Duke's ThD (where I am currently finishing an MTS) - a rejection from Princeton Seminary for PhD in theology I can't find anything from UVA beyond the fact that I'm still pending. I'm also still waiting to hear from Harvard (PhD), Yale, Chicago (which said decisions are being finalized this week with notifications going out by the week of March 9th at the latest), Emory, SMU, and Dayton. The wait is killing me...
