  1. hey y'all, just wondering if anybody is planning on leveraging packages across depts?? I'm trying to figure out the most diplomatic way to do so...
  2. Just turned down an offer for UT (comparative, funded + extra fellowship). Will likely be turning down a UCLA offer this week as well.
  3. If you are going to do a MA you should do it in the US if you plan to eventually complete your PhD here. To be frank, there's not a lot of respect for foreign degrees in the US (they are perceived as less rigorous), even those from elite UK institutions. The professors writing your letters might be more recognizable. Also, its also bound to be cheaper, especially when you consider the cost of living in London.
  4. Me too. The cycle is finally over for me except Chicago--I actually called today to tell them I did not want to be considered for the MA since I've been accepted to PhDs elsewhere, but they couldn't tell me anything about the status of my application. I recall a post a while ago where somebody said something to the effect of schools like Chicago and NYU don't bother accepting people they think will be admitted to higher ranked programs, even if they are a good fit. Is that actually true? Would a department take that sort of risk given the stochastic nature of the process?
  5. Well, anyone accepted to multiple programs has their top pick. But there are a couple of programs I plan on visiting schools that were not at the top of my list because honestly, sometimes higher ranked programs aren't as amazing as they're made out to be and lower ranked programs have surprising offerings. If they're interested in me, I am going to take the offer seriously and make the visit weekend if I can!
  6. I already claimed it! see my post on page 157. email came at 5:03pm west coast time.
  7. just got an email--in at UCLA! I thought they were mostly done. Only thing is that from the offer letter and forms it looks like they think I'm an international student (I was born outside the US). Maybe that's why it took so long--they might do international student admissions last. I'm going to try to clear things up on Monday with a phone call, although I hope that doesn't impact my offer! good luck to the rest still waiting to hear back from UCLA, if there is anyone!
  8. yes! but I haven't received any info. have you? I even emailed Janet Newhall on Monday (no reply)... but if we are going to need to buy our own plane tickets it would be nice to know sooner rather than later.
  9. Northwestern listings aren't fake! well, mine isn't (comparative). I was too excited to go to the forum to post at the time.
  10. Sorry but how do you know it was a comparative rejection? Just wondering if someone can repost the link to the results page they're looking at... I don't see where subfield, GREs and GPAs are noted on the results page...
  11. I'm being incredibly OCD about Chicago. I just spoke with Kathy Anderson on the phone and she made it seem like most offers had been sent out yesterday, although not everything--will be out by the end of the week. All decisions will be finalized by the end of the month (I assume that referred to rejections). To me it sounded like she was being purposefully vague... I didn't ask her about my personal status because I knew she wouldn't be able to answer but I'm not too hopeful. I will refrain from posting on the results board though until I get a definitive notification. Congrats to the new admits (Minnesota, Amherst, UVA). And to all those feeling dejected, remember you're not alone! Misery loves company.
  12. Thanks for the affirmation! If anything, the positive spirit of this forum makes me feel marginally better than cookies.
  13. Well, after obsessively hitting "refresh" all afternoon at work and finally realizing that it was over, I drowned my sorrows in chocolate chip cookies, then power walked home in an attempt to compensate for the excess caloric consumption. I've never been an emotional eater (usually the opposite) but there's a first time for everything I guess... I was entitled, right? I interviewed with one program (Emory), and still have 10 more schools to hear from (including CHYPS) but hey, it's their loss. Good luck to all! May the odds be ever in (our) favor.
  14. I'm even more depressed now since it seems there's no hope and Chicago was (I thought) the perfect "fit" for me and that I had the credentials. This doesn't bode well for the rest of the cycle, methinks
