  1. Academia is not the problem. And I'm not saying my views are more "enlightened." Just saying that some ares of science are having government funding decreased because of changes in policy. If you don't want to bring religion or politics into the discussion, you don't even have to. Areas related to sexuality, stem cell research, and several other areas are not being funded as well as in the past and as a result, much of the research in these areas is now being done in other countries. Does this encourage more people to consider other countries to study, and/or make them less likely to want to study in the US if they are in these fields?
  2. That sounds pretty crazy... and like they are lying and a bit immoral. They should have apologized and said what the offer was and let you decide what was best for you. Unless they thought that you didn't know you could reverse a decision until April 15th, then I guess they could mention that and wait to see if you had any intrerest in doing that. If you said you wanted to, then maybe advice. I hope he doesn't contact the other school without your approval, because that could really mess you up. Also, I think it's wierd if it's a lower tier school trying to get you to take their over a higher tiered school. Just in case this guy is truly insane, I would contact the school you are attending by e-mail saying how excited you are to attend and asking a innocuous question (where do I get information on housing) to let them know that you are still gung ho. If he makes a comment to them for some reason then he will look like a lunatic. The screw-up part... maybe. The insane response, however, is unjustified. No similar stories, luckily. But, I have yet to hear from two schools and have already accpeted at my school, so there may still be time for insanity.
  3. You have listed to two options. Accept both and then decline one later (technically this is against the agreement signed by a lot of graduate organizations, but unlikely they will retract offers if they discover) or choose without visiting. Alot of people decide upon a school without visiting by talking with professors, students, and using the website and other resources to find out about the school. It really isn't their fault you don't have time to visit and didn't visit earlier and you probably are holding back an offer being given to another person, so you should keep that in mind. I understand people who are waiting to hear about funding from other schools etc, but the information you get from visiting (what do students think, do I click with professors, what's the climate like, what's the equipment/facility like) can beacquired other ways and schools have told you their decisions on time, so this doesn't seem like a good enough reason to possibly annoy people in your field. I would say try to choose a school without visiting or try to visit earlier.
  4. I don't think he was talking about the feeling of belonging or the sharing of opinions, so much as he was talking about the funding for some sciences being affected by changes in policy that restrict certain types of research by pulling funding or only funding if touchy religious matter will not be affected by results. So, the possibility that areas such as genetics, anything with stem cell, sex research (kind of my field), evolution (and for that matter anthropology), etc. will be faced with reduced funding over the coming years. If I'm wrong in my interpretation of tripax, then let me ask that question. Again, not condemning any view, just wondering if funding possibilities waning in certain areas affect decisions to research in the US.
  5. I just randomly checked the website and was rejected. aw, screw 'em.
  6. It's amazing the level of intelligence and appreciation of diversity of people applying to graduate school isn't it? Every day, I am appreciative of the far strides people have made since middle school in their humor, every day discussion, and appreciation of lifestyles other than their own. Oh wait... damn.
  7. Checked the box.... Going to U Chicago... In less than two months. yay! something new to stress about!
  8. 8K at Kent goes farther than 13.5 in NYC. Plus, PhD programs always get more than MA, so you basically hit the jackpot for MAs. But, yeah, some people don't get in anywhere and have to get a real job... Bet that sucks.
  9. Yeah... that seems to be a little over the top. I also don't think it's any more "personal" than a note. Unless they said how much they like wine and fruit in a casual conversation and that would be strange.
  10. If you have have spoken with a possible mentor, I would call them personally. Then for the letter for the grad school, if they gave you a form, just fill it out. If they didn't, I would just say you appreciate the offer, think it was a great opportunity and that you found a better fit for you. Keep it short and sweet.

    Pets anyone?!

Mostly he comes when I call him, he's still a puppy though and easily distracted by things that are shiny, tasty, or hazardous to his health. But, i wouldn't let him out without a leash outside even is he was completely reliable coming to me. I think most places have leash laws anyways and it's just safer for a bunch of reasons. I am going to U Chicago. Just sent in my acceptance today It's considered one of the mosty dog friendly cities, but that was accidental, not a deciding factor.
  12. LOL. I didn't notice that. I just mostly looked at the pictures and such. That is hilarious though. I didn't know about open toes. Are my feet communist?
  13. Finally got up the nerve to send in my acceptance. Going to U Chicago next year for biopsychology and moving there in June (scary). Just wanted to see if there was anyone else heading there next fall.

My dog lives in my room (so like an apartment) of a house. I take him out to go to the bathroom and he doesn't walk on a leash well enough for walks. Sometimes he runs around like crazy in the room, but overall he's pretty ok. He's under 30 lbs, but does fine in my room. Any bigger might be a problem.

    Akron, OH

Akron not the hoppingest of places. I don't know specifics, but you can easily get by in Akron with 18,000. It's not really a city, so you can live in the suburbs basically and be 10 minutes away. If you don't have a car, be close to campus, because public transportation is not what it is a big city.

From what my vet said, Beagles don't tend to have that bad of ears. I just wipe his with a baby wipe about 1-2/wk and that's mostly to keep him baby fresh. I don't think neutering is cruel. It is more cruel to keep a dog sexually frustrated and or have little unwanted puppies.
  17. Most places you can only rescind an acceptance until April 15th or cannot accept any offer as far as I know. They would have to give you official written approval to be let out of the commitment and go to another school and they don;t have to do it. Read the agreement if it is a CGS agreement signing school.
  18. For humanities esp that sounds good. Also, it depends on the city. If that is NYC not as good. As for negotiating more money, as far as I can tell it really doesn't work. You may be able to ask for summer support, but don't try to haggle. Anon, why does it make you flustered to get more money. I can think of many emotions that would be associated with unexpected money, and flustered is not one. Also, are you accepted at Ivies and/or cities that are very expensive? That can explain the bump.

I tried to go directly to the link and it didn't work... i think it may be a problem with the link or a site you have to sign in for.

Kind of a crap shoot... Sometimes 8-10 hours, sometimes 5 minutes. In general he doesn't destroy too much when I leave him alone if I hide stuff away. He did destroy the cord to my printer from my computer today though. Jerk. 8:30-5 is a fairly typical day right now, but he usually goes to the bathroom at 7-7:30 so it's really that long. I loved crate training. Most dogs will not use the bathroom in a crate (if it's small enough, but not toooo small) so they learn bladder control. Once they have learned, try shorter intervals out and then finally the longer ones. I think I did about a month or so in the crate when I was gone, then only when he's been bad or had accidents given a couple days in. They usually just fall asleep in the crate, so it's not cruel and they learn more easily that way. With older dogs, you may not have to crate train much or at all if they have fairly good bladder control and are pretty non-destructive.

AWWWW he is cute... Not as cute as my Ry of course (j/k). As for inserting pics, I had to do some research too. I am a little unsavy. Move your mouse over IMg above when in the reply area and it will tell you how to do it. But, basically you press alt-p then the address then alt-p again. on either side of the url you'll see . (not sure if that will show up on yours, because it may think I'm putting in an image.
  23. That was really clever. I was shocked until I realized that I was the one with the dirty mind. Tricky.
  24. I thiink these things vary too much because of a) location type of school c) strength of candidate to be standardized for any field. You can't give the same amount in NYC as you do in a less pricy city, a better funded school can give more than one that isn't, and better candidates get less than worse candidates. You can at best say that physical sciences, then social sciences, then humanities tend to get msot money. But, even within those areas there can be major differences at certain schools that have strengths in one over another.
