  1. Got an email about funding from UVa from the history department.

I'm still waiting to here from Indiana and NYU but my #1, Maryland, gave me an offer that I can't refuse and so I'm basically set.
  3. I got a three year fellowship offer from UVA but I'm most likely turning it down because my #1, Maryland, gave me 5 years and a lot lot more.
  4. I'm still waiting on Maryland (supposed to make decisions this week or next), NYU, and Indiana. However, I hear word through the grapevine that two key Latin Americanists are leaving Indiana soon so that pretty much drops it from the running even if I get accepted.

You gotta go with Chilean wine for cost/quality. You can find Frontera in bigger bottles for under $10. Something I'm going to miss though about not being in school is the finer liquors. I'm going to take a significant pay cut going back to school and I've developed a taste for fancy pants bourbon (bulleit) and gin.
  6. Me too. Heard through an email.

Not sure if there are any other Maryland applicants out there, but the AdCom is still meeting and won't be snail mailing out decisions till the first or second week of March. Hopefully the snow will leave us the hell alone for a while
  8. I'm in a situation where coming out of undergrad, I had decided to take some time off before ultimately applying to grad school and she got the better job offer (read: I got zero). We ended up moving in together in DC. We've basically agreed that she won't quit her job to move with me if I end up at NYU, Virginia or Indiana, especially since like folks said, Charlottesvile and Bloomington aren't exactly overflowing with jobs. Thankfully my #1 school is Maryland and if I get in we'll stay in DC but if I go somewhere else we'll have to do long distance again We survived it when we studied abroad in Chile and Belgium respectively, but I'm not really looking forward to that again.

  10. I spoke to the UVA grad secretary yesterday and it sounds like they're going to wait a while before sending out funding information. They said they're going to catch a breather because they rushed to get out all of the decisions. One thing she said was that they also wanted to wait to see how many acceptances they would have. This is kind of frustrating because finding out about funding is a key piece of info in my decision making process. Anyone else contact UVA about funding or have an insights to share?

At the bottom of my application page it has this: Decision Status: Available beginning 2/18/2010 # Your application decision is now available online and the 'decision' is a hyperlink.
  12. I actually focus on the Mapuche and the Chilean state after independence, especially issues of land rights and colonization. Bárbaros looks really interesting. Have you read Florencia Mallon's Courage Tastes of Blood? She was my UG thesis advisory and it is an excellent history of the Mapuche during the 20th century.

Congrats! I got into UVA for the same thing. What's your focus? I've been working on 19th and early 20th century Chile.

It's things like this that make me glad that I'm not currently a student. I recommend delving into something that totally shuts out external stimuli/worry. Take Civilization 4 and some bourbon for instance.
