  1. it must be co-authored. otherwise, this is unethical and illegal academically.
  2. there is no such thing as "publish or perish" for a grad student. you are in the mentoring stage and your supervisor will guide through and eventually get you to publish and/or present at least once in order to fulfil program requirements however, you should have the incentive to publish and you will actually feel a sense of pride and accomplishment after your first publication. this will boost your confidence and encourage you to continue your studies.
  3. yes. it varies. i hope it coveres gym for summer as well at McGill.
  4. actually in my previous university the fees only covered the fulltime studies period (fall and winter terms). i had to pay again for using gym during summer. i think it is cheaper to join a commerical gym because many of them offer $30/month if you sign up for a whole year.
  5. it is like $40 per month. I would rather join a local gym with this kind of money.
  6. Yes. It has always been included in what they call "additional fees." i think this is the norm. at least NA universities. http://www.mcgill.ca...c/mastfulltime/ in your case, it is going to be $497 for "Student Services/Athletics" i think it is more affordabe for students to use campus services (health, fitness, societies) when everyone contributes. these services would not be sustainable if only paid by students who use them.
  7. i think this is the norm in universities. probably trying to compel students to use the gym and stay fit. i never really appreciated the importance of fitness until I got more mature.
  8. Thanks a lot catwoman. Your comments are very valuable to me in making my final decision. Most likely I will stay away from the Ghetto, becuase I don't like surprises I was reading online articles and blogs about drunkiness, vandalism, public urination, and vomiting ... lol ... such a happy place full of 1st timers. Probably it is not a daily thing but I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially that I have to sign for a 1-year lease. I think most likely I will end up in the du parc area. One thing I find attracting about the ghetto is having to walk, which is great for exercising. On the other hand, living in du parc area, I can still take the bus for 15 min and go down to McGill's gym and make use of the fees we pay mandatorily along with tuition.
  9. good morning catwoman it looks like the ticket is valid for 120min according to their webiste. may I ask this question, please? do you think st famille is noisy, being close to st laurent (drunk people / vehicles)?
  10. A little bit of exercise does not hurt What about a single bus ticket? How does it work? In Edmonton, a single ticket gives the right to use bus/metro for 90 minutes without restrictions. I am looking forward to moving to Montreal. So far, I have not heard anything negative about the city. Everything about it seems delightful.
  11. great. Montreal is a great city. i already love it. i dont have a specific location. but the rent and size become very attractive when you move farther from downtown. of course, I would want to stay very close to a metro station or a single bus line to McGill like du parc. by the way, how did you cope with the noise in the ghetto? just curious about how bad it was/is. i think i should get done with apt hunting ASAP. it is distracting me from preparing for PhD.
  12. catwoman ... our Montreal guide how does the monthly bus pass work? Do I get to use train/metro/buses unlimited? I am considering living 30-40 min. away via metro from McGill
  13. usually engineering students get office spaces/cubicles assigned to them. i did my MSc at UofA and this what we had. I could come anytime day or night and access the building and my office space. on the other hand, having a nice quiet apartment is also suitable for night sutudy.
  14. thanks catwoman i had a feeling that I would be better off on st famille. ECE is "electrical and computer engineering." In general, do you know anything about 24hr access to office spaces for grad students?
  15. thanks catwoman really appreciate your advice. how about st famille. i found a 1 1/2 on top floor for about same price ($550). as for the one on lorne ave. the location is attractive because it is just behind the ECE building. and i dont care about daytime noise. i usually sleep around 10 and wake up around 4:30. another related question. do grad students (particularly ECE) get 24hr access to offices in the ECE building? this is why i like the basement because i can spend the nights in my office space studying - if i dont feel like sleeping.
  16. Hi everyone, can someone please tell me how Lorne ave (mcgill ghetto) is? noise, drunkiness, vandalism, sewage/drainage I found a basement studio and still not sure if I should sign the lease. I am not in Montreal and cannot go and see it for myself, although I've seen pictures and street view on google map. thanks for help appreciate it

    McGill Vs GWU

In this case, you will have about $1300/month. This is good money. How helpful has the association been so far? What are you expecting them to help you with?

    McGill Vs GWU

Do you have to pay tuition from this funding? Make sure you exactly know how much money is left for living. Consider also bus and metro fare if you live far from campus. I don't know if students get discount. Do you have acquaintances/friends/relatives in DC area? Where do you currently live? Is it your first time visiting USA or Canada?

    McGill Vs GWU

Hello Definitely GWU, because financial stability is vital to your psychological health which affects the quality of your research which is more important than school reputation.
