  1. Anyone want to claim the Oregon acceptance on the results board? I applied there but haven't heard back. Another silent weekend is coming...
  2. Anyone has any idea how a "unranked" wait-list works? Do we need to do anything to increase our chances in this situation? I mean I did respond positively to the wait-list mail and told them unequivocally of my continued interests in their program. But beyond that are we suppose to do anything else? Or we just wait and wait?
  3. Thanks, ghijklmn! But all that I can be sure of is that I am not out yet, because the wording of the email is a bit vague. It says "you are on our very top list of finalists ... though we cannot offer a funding package just yet." And "over the next several weeks the funding picture will become clearer." My guess is that it is just another way to say I was wait-listed. Still, better than straight off rejection. No, I am not going to the weekend as I am in China right now, uninvited and broke . Hope you have fun there!
  4. Oh, I see. Thanks for the info! PS: Congrats on your acceptances! Stanford! Such an amazing program!
  5. Hi, jiajia! Penn State just emailed me too. But told me to wait for funding (not sure if this means being wait-listed). Did they offer you a place?
  6. Thanks, ghijklmn! Still haven't heard anything yet....
  7. Big cong!!! So happy for you! And anxious for myself, too. May I ask if Eburne notify on behalf of the Dept? Or as POI?
  8. Anyone would claim the Penn State acceptance? Have you guys been notified? ghijklmn and Magical Realist?
  9. Yeah, I'd certainly like to look at modern Chinese and English literature. I was very interested in WWII literature (including those about the traumatic experiences during the Pacific War). Only I turned to contemporary works when I found that, unlike their Anglophone and German counterparts, Chinese literature about war experiences are mostly, if not exclusively, produced by the later generation. And, yes, Penn State is great. Right now I am trying hard not to think (too much and too often) about it though, because it is such a great fit and a rejection from there will definitely hurt real bad. Wow, four national literatures! That is really impressive. I am especially envious of your ability to really read German and French books in the original. I guess it is definitely harder to pin-down a set of interests when you have so many national literatures to explore! I'd like to pick up German for PhD studies. If you decide to learn Chinese, maybe we can help each other if we really become classmates one day (which will certainly be great news for me, because it will mean either I am off the waitlist at WUSTL or accepted by Penn State, both big YAY! )
  10. Of course not.I am primarily interested (wait, interview nightmare flashbacks! ) in the intersection of memory (individual and collective), trauma, and the ethical. And I plan to research in contemporary Chinese literature. What about yours?
  11. Ah, another week is about to end. Has anyone heard from Penn State yet? Also just got rejected by San Diego and waitlisted by WUSTL. Not bad.
  12. Friday, That is great! Thanks! No, Prof. J. Eburne was not. Both of them are scholars in my field (East Asian studies). So I guess they just assign the most relevant faculty members? Good luck to you and Magical Realist!
  13. Many thanks for the info! Just had mine. The two interviewers were incredibly nice and did most of the talking. Also asked about the research, but not much. Just the skype connection was so bad that I could barely hear them after the first ten minutes, especially when they were introducing the program. I didn't get much of it when they explained about the next step. Do you still remember what they said about the decision date?
  14. Thanks! Yes, at Columbia. I haven't heard from the Dept. yet. The App Status changed to "recommend" several days ago, and then, yesterday, the Decision Status became "admitted". But I don't know if they have started sending out formal notifications. I will let you know if I get one. Wish you the best of luck!
  15. Thank YOU, asleepawake! I must say I really benefited a lot from your Dropbox SOP feedback group. I really appreciated it! But I did not post my SOP because I didn't finish it at the time and it felt like a total mess. I am still feeling pretty guilty about not sharing. So if the group is still running, I hope I may contribution now by posting mine. Many, many thanks!
  16. I applied to WUSTL too. That is about the same time for the Penn State interview. Now I am not sure which one I should be more nervous about.... But luckily I just got an acceptance to Stony Brook. Ye!!!
  17. Thanks for the reply! Not sure who was recommending to whom. But I just found out that I got in. Ye!
  18. Hi, Magical Realist. I am about to have mine on next Wednesday. Thanks for the info! And Congrats on your acceptance! So I suppose there will be more than one interviewer involved? And good luck to ghijklmn too!
  19. Hi, everyone! I just checked my South Carolina application account, the status is now "recommend" and yet the decision status is "pending". I cannot quite remember if this is the default status after the submission (though I have checked the status for like a million times now). So I was wondering does it mean that I was recommended by the department? Or am I just being desperately paranoid again? Thanks!
