  1. it's maybe 6th or 7th from the top. titled "what to look for when you visit" or something close to that.
  2. there's a thread specifically about this within the chemistry forum. there's some pretty good advice there.
  3. no posts on gradcafe are deleted. if you want to know that type of information, you can find it yourself.
  4. i consulted a lot of people about this process, so i can't think of anything i'd do differently in general. i regret doing research in chemical engineering, i wish i had started in the chem dept from the start, but that's specific to my situation. two pieces of info that i think everyone should look into are: 1) retention - do most students finish? i will put plenty of pressure on myself in grad school but don't want any chopping blocks in the first year. 2) research interests - don't apply to top schools for the namesake, this isn't undergrad. granted, many top programs will likely have research you find interesting, but be very thorough and honest in finding departments that have multiple research groups whose work matches the interests of the applicant.
  5. no publications. other info is in my sig and on the results page
  6. just got into UPenn via email - i think they're trying to finalize their decisions this week
  7. I was told late last week that UPenn was still making decisions. I was told specifically that the organic division was still working through their pile and that they hoped to notify everyone soon - whatever that means...
  8. door is probably closed for Harvard, but you should probably be more concerned with deciding between three stellar options!
  9. Congrats! I was bummed about not hearing anything last week. I guess there's still a small chance. I'd definitely go to the second weekend if I had the chance.
  10. Could not agree more. Cost of living and convenience/access of essentials are both huge concerns. And I'm also very interested in recreational facilities and the like, since i will need to have some stuff to do in my precious free time.
  11. @pzh yeah hopefully columbia finishes up soon. i'd definitely visit if i got in there. fortunately, though, we both have great options even if columbia doesn't work out
  12. did anyone hear back from columbia this week??
  13. for all interested: I just called Columbia's Chem Dept and was told that offers will still be made through the end of this week. I was also told that there could be a waiting list, but that the length of the list and the names of applicants on the list have not been decided. FWIW
  14. anybody have info on columbia visit dates?
  15. Got rejected from Stanford today, which was a bummer. But I finally got a call from Caltech! So that definitely took the sting away, especially since I had kinda given up on them.
  16. I have not heard from either. And I meant organic/inorganic/physical/etc. I was able to connect the dots on the Chem PhD program haha
  17. Chemistry Fall 2012 thread has this sort of info if you're willing to sift through what has now reached 400 posts lol congrats on your acceptances so far! if you wouldn't mind, how/when did you hear from Columbia, and what field did you apply under?
  18. On a whim I decided to see if Stanford Chemistry had a facebook page. They did, and this was posted two hours ago: "Record breaking year for graduate application this year! Highest number in the past 5 years and a 15% increase since last year. Congratulations to all those who make the cut. " So a) damn the large applicant pool, and b ) sounds like they are not done notifying.
  19. forgot to edit the bolded text. i added the visits for USC

  21. Accepted to USC for organic/biological. Far from top choice, but glad to have finally heard back from somewhere.
  22. I got the same email. In my response (a "No"), I asked if the email was sent to all applicants in those departments or only those under serious consideration. I have not heard back. So who knows...
  23. yeah that seems about 2 weeks ahead of schedule
  24. Not sure what the national perception is, but I'd imagine the Scripps name will still carry a lot of weight. I didn't end up applying, but I really liked the work of Dr. William Roush and Dr. Glenn Micalizio.
