  1. when i go home for break, i'll likely be spending a lot of time with friends, watching football, going to the gym, and playing skyrim... i can count on those things at least partially distracting me
  2. processchemist: I'm from northern virginia and about 50 ish kids from my HS goes to Tech every year. I don't know anyone who has studied chem there, but I can promise you that none of them regret their decision to attend VT. if you can handle living in blacksburg (not really near anything), then you'll enjoy it. there's an incredible sense of community at VT, and incidents like these, while tragic, tend to heighten the sensitivity to unusual behavior. in case you hadn't read, the recent shooter was not a student. I'm actually not sure if they've even determined motive. going to VT is by no means any more dangerous than a school located in a major city. hope that helps
  3. FWIW i also uploaded a single document with two separate essays.
  4. @toypajme: excellent username. doesn't quite translate, but i like where your head's at. no such thing as a bad blink reference.
  5. interesting...mine shows a date for the score report as well...i bet they'll wait a few days at least to try to get people to pay 12 dollars though
  6. Hey has anyone here paid the 12 bucks to get their subject test scores early? If so, was it worth it? I kinda want to know my score so I can get my apps in even earlier...but I don't want to pay for the score early if ETS tends to post the scores online before 6 weeks passes anyway. I'm not concerned with sending the score reports next week, but I'd like the programs to begin reading my application sooner rather than at/near the deadline. Thanks!
  7. Veele: I won't be able to submit my apps until the end of November because that's when I get my Chem GRE scores back. So I will certainly not hear from anyone any time soon. I recommend you look through last year's thread about the application process since people posted their results there. Just read through and you should be able to find when the earliest person reported hearing back from Stanford and other places. Good luck!
  8. V: Estimate : 590-690 Actual: 160 (86%) Q: Estimate: 750-800 Actual: 170 (99%) AW: 4.0 (48%) PIIIIISSSSED about the AW. Very surprised by that. Pleasantly surprised by V, although it's pretty inconsequential for Chem programs. And I guess I got all the math right. I don't know how the percentiles worked for the old format, but apparently it is possible to get a 170 Q and have it be 99th percentile. In any case, now I must anxiously await the subject test results. Best of luck to everyone!
  9. Also applying for fall 2012 and ALSO applying for synthetic organic/chemical biology haha. Applying to: Stanford, UPenn, Caltech, Harvard, Columbia, USC, UT Austin Possibly also applying to 2 of the following: UNC Chapel Hill, Colorado State, UC Irvine, and Georgetown Very excited for everyone! Good luck!
  10. I also took the chemistry subject test. I thought it was very similar to the practice tests I took, perhaps a bit easier. I skipped about a dozen the first time through but had more than enough time to go back and focus on each of those. Very anxious to see my score, although from what I hear the chemistry GRE test scores are not all that important. Best of luck to everyone else who tested today!
  11. Has anyone else noticed the "Now Hiring" announcement on Stanford's page? It's only been up for a few days but it says that they are looking for two tenure-track synthetic chemists, broadly defined. I assumed that Barry Trost would likely retire in the immediate future, but does this mean that someone else is retiring soon? Does anyone have any insight into this situation? Thanks
