  1. Also guilty. I don't expect to screw up again, though...
  2. No, not unless the class you added would have left a giant hole in your academic history without it.
  3. Comics Convention
  4. Well, I said that not to be a braggy-mc-bragface, but because it rings true. I applied a few years ago to MFA programs and I didn't get accepted until March, and I had no funded offers until almost April. Yet it seems I feel as stressed now as I did then. I probably don't. I just think I do, because that is in the past and I don't remember the day-to-day of it. I think I would be much more upset about the rejection from Ohio State if I didn't already have an acceptance, and now I can more clearly see it wasn't a great fit anyway and that it is okay. The rejections might sting less, but the waiting is as frustrating.... Yuck. My condolences. I think good news is coming for you.
  5. When someone else gets in and I do not, I have two options: 1. Be happy for them, which will make me happier and give me a new friend. I am still not admitted to the program; and 2. Be bitter/jealous/wish things were different, which will make me angry or upset. I am still not admitted to the program. I think 1 is a clear winner. Congrats all around!
  6. It differs by program. The percent of admitted students who attend is the program's yield. It is higher, obviously, at the most competitive schools. There is no use trying to figure out how it works at each individual school, because it is no doubt changing all the time anyway.
  7. Good news, everyone! I checked my spam folder just in case, and it turns out that I can get a PhD from Rochville University, the same University that Chester Ludlow went to for his MBA.
  8. Congrats! A waitlist is good news. & Congrats bluecheese as well!
  9. Having an existing acceptance doesn't even make this waiting/uncertainty easier. Ok, it probably actually does, it just doesn't feel like it.
  10. Congrats damequixote and mostlytoasty!
  11. If there were 25 spots and I was number 26 I would wish the school had more funding before I'd wish ill of the other applicants. I might hope they turn down their spots, or wish that my application had been stronger or that it had clicked better with the committee, but my regret doesn't fall on those people admitted. I even want you to get in, DontHate!
  12. Uhm, I AM being real. I feel excited for anybody enjoying this moment. It helps that I didn't apply to Wisconsin, but I don't feel the world is so small that I am in constant competition with everyone else. That sounds like a miserable way to feel, so, uh, sorry you feel that way, but please don't make your bitterness the default for the rest of us.
  13. Congrats gradschoolwannabe (now gradschoolgonnabe) & mysterious Wisconsin admits!
  14. I love this math-y theory too, though I haven't really done any of it myself... yet. Network theory is pretty bomb, too.
  15. Did you check your status on the website? None of us received e-mail notifications that I know of. You have to log in and click for more if it says "decision." If it just says "in review," your status is still up in the air. Good luck!
  16. Even if I don't hear anything new for a while, I need the experience of seeing other people get news in order to continue to function.
  17. We need some new stuff already!
  18. I am (though my undergrad GPA isn't sub-3.0 or anything, it's pretty low, and from a commuter school), and I have an acceptance with a fellowship nomination! It's possible! I think the MA, which I know you also have, helps immensely if you have done well in your program. It proves you can handle graduate work and helps to overshadow - though not erase - your lackluster undergrad work. My GRE is decent, but nothing to write home about. My Lit GRE is bad, but only 2 schools got the score. For me the solution was applying widely. Of course, I don't know if I will get any more acceptances, and if so how many, but applying widely allowed me to apply to all kinds of schools who place different emphases on numbers. With 6 applications I think you have a very good shot, but IF you don't get in you don't know for sure it is because you could not overcome your numbers. It may be that it wasn't the best fit, or simply that someone else was a better fit. There are people who have a 4.0 who get rejected from 6 schools even with a good writing sample, etc. It's just the game. You still have a very good chance to get in this year, but if you don't I hope you don't give up. I know that you read a draft of my statement of purpose, too: It's not like it was brilliant. You know this! I think it ended up being pretty solid, but then I read yours and it was good, too, so I absolutely will not believe that you secretly just suck because I saw proof to the contrary. I also got rejected from Ohio State. It's just one school, and a LOT of rejections went out from them. They took 10% last year, and probably fewer this time. You're not done! GAME THEORY, you guys. It's coming to a lit department near you ASAP. Applications are pretty much a casino.
  19. April 15th is the deadline by when you need to accept or decline an offer. This is universal at all schools/programs that are CGSR compliant (this should be just about everywhere). Some waitlist offers end up going out after April 15th, but the vast majority of offers should be out already. You should have time to visit the schools between notification and April 15th, but there are no guarantees.
