  1. Boycotting an entire University for something like this keeps other victims and witnesses in other places quiet. It absolutely sends the message that you better not say a damn thing, because you won't just hold the perpetrator(s) responsible, you'll fuck up your entire school/community/family/whatever. Rape happens and is covered up on every college campus and in every city in the world.
  2. Out of up votes but HELLZ YEAH VIDEO. My History of English course changed my life, man.
  3. Yay congrats girl who wears glasses, proflorax, and mfmill03!
  4. I like you, too! I also like birds. Well, yes. I still avoid it in my academic writing when I can, because of the controversy that will ensue! There are copy editors everywhere still marking those things you refer to. They're marking them all up! There's two prepositions for you. Love them. <3.
  5. Congrats to HHEoS and all other recent acceptees! I just got my notification of acceptance at Lehigh. It's a bit of a small/unknown/rising program, but it's a very good fit, I think (and so do they)! There is no funding information yet, though.
  6. There are nine asleepawakes. It's the only way I get any grading done. (ETA: Context gone!) My post in response to DontHate was a bit snarky but it was intended to be friendly. Yes, the blog I linked to also contains a bit of sass. Yes, I post a lot of gifs on the internet, because my internet time is often rest time. I'm glad to have a debate now and then on a forum like this one, but I don't take everything incredibly seriously on the internet. Gifs make me laugh. I post them, and I love when others post them. It is what it is. I do want to add that our little language once used "ye" and "thou," and now "you" serves both functions pretty effectively (in most cases; though I'm cool with a "yinz"). I don't see any real reason why "they" cannot do the same. I understand that some things can just be grating on the ears, though.
  7. I get it. You don't like gifs. You're too smart and serious and such. I direct you to the same gif for my response. Defaulting to "he" or "he or she" is an implicit statement against the usefulness of the singular they. The link I sent you to is hardly a "screaming polemic." It's a decent write-up of a bunch of the reasons why singular "they" is perfectly fine, and includes a couple of reasons why it ought to be preferred in some cases.
  8. The bad news is that if you don't apply, you don't get in... the good news is you don't get rejected.
  9. There are a number of MA programs that do, though probably not with funding.
  10. Congrats dmmar! For those curious about Buffalo, my online application has finally started to reflect my acceptance today... so I guess your hawk eyes were right that some kind of update was coming. I'm not sure what this means for everyone else, but they could be doing waitlists or MA decisions.
  11. The Gatsby game has stolen my heart. Why would you do that when I have 30 papers to grade today? Also, for those wondering about your status on the Buffalo website: Stop. Mine hasn't changed and I was accepted 2 weeks ago. It doesn't seem like anyone is updating it, so don't let it stress you out.
  12. I hope you just gave her The Bell Jar and were done with it. This sounds exactly the same as working at at a CD/DVD store, which I did in high school: "You know that song that goes dun dun dun dun doo dun dun? Who does that?"
  13. WHOA that was so quick! Congratulations! Here is Ke$sha and a unicorn fighting evil in a rainbow for you. Congrats to mostlytoasty and yellow.wallpaper, too!
  14. I'm out of up votes, but this is great! I'm not so good at bringing up the work of professors in conversation with them, because it often feels like brown-nosing to me. How do you bring up someone's work without sounding like a tool? I imagine if I go to visiting days this will be how I am received:
  15. Thanks! I'm super excited about it and it still seems unreal. You've got Ohio State (where they definitely don't want me) and Rochester (where, given today, I'm thinking they also don't want me) and I've got Buffalo. All evens out, but there seems to be no logic to it that we can predict from our side!
  16. Conrgrats to smilax, sebastiansteddy, and patientagony, and anyone else who got in today who I've missed!
  17. Yeah, I would guess that an unranked list means that who they will invite off the waitlist depends on who declines and/or your subfield. Good luck!!
  18. FINALLY OMG. The invite to visiting weekend sounds VERY promising!
  19. Congratulations! Care to share where?
  20. I am so confuse by rankings. What are these? They say they are NRC rankings but why are they different from the real NRC rankings here?
  21. Nothing is as bad as the MFA rankings from Poets & Writers. They are literarily based entirely on how many applicants report applying to the program on a gradcafe-like website. A methodological mess.
  22. Reputation: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/articles/2012/03/12/methodology-graduate-social-sciences-and-humanities-rankings
