what is "hot" in English today?
asleepawake replied to Taco Superior's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hellz yeah it is. -
LOL glad everybody thinks somebody must be a troll because they're considering attending my school. Sweet, guys! First: Unless things are changing, 12k at FAU (and yes, it is yearly, not per semester) means you're a top candidate. Most people get 9k. The 80% tuition remission essentially means that they cover your complete tuition charges and you pay for some fees including parking, your ID card, etc. They add up to less than 1k per semester (sometimes significantly less, depending on how many credits you take). If you apply for FASFA, sometimes there are 1k "Graduate Grants" available if you apply early enough. The faculty at FAU is really wonderful and I've worked with some brilliant people. We have graduates in a bunch of PhD programs starting at about rankings 20 and lower, including U of Iowa, U of Miami, WVU, FSU, USF, Southern Methodist, etc. We are not a top-ranked program but if that's not super important for you, we have plenty to offer. I can't speak to your other offers, but I know that I've been happy with the education I got here, and I think I've done well with my PhD applications. So meh. Reputation smeputation.

Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants
asleepawake replied to harvardlonghorn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yeah, what's that all about? They're now the only program I haven't heard from. You would think they could at least reject some of us. I'm just counting it as a rejection, because even an acceptance at April 15th wouldn't matter, since I will have already made a decision. -
Fall 2014 applicants??

Kind of. I haven't worn closed-toe shoes more than 5 times a year since I moved to the South... -
60k per semester + room and board.

I think it's a good idea, but it might not be incredibly accurate given how most of the information is coming from a single applicant. At some places, stipends and fellowships vary widely. I tried to enter everything I knew about funding overall rather than just my own offer, though.
-
It makes complete sense. Even though I ended up choosing a completely opposite choice, I pretty much agree with this, even the part of about knowing it one of my weaknesses.
-
I am (pleasantly) surprised to see how many stipends run 20k+.

I ended up voting for "no canon," but I do think that is is necessary to understand and view a wide range of works, and that no matter one's focus, just about everyone in English studies should be familiar with a few medieval and renaissance texts, as well as with the likes of Aristotle, primarily because of how important they have been historically, and just how many other texts include illusions to these works. The canon makes more sense for works that are pre-printing-press to me.

Great idea! Thanks!

Butttt Buffalo is ranked so much lower and WVU isn't ranked at all! They need to update. -

Maybe not! The wine bar sounds like a great time to network and chat with a lot of different people. -

I remembering seeing Bryn Mawr in the old rankings and googling it trying to check and the program and then being all . . . They don't even have an MA. -
I haven't accused the OP of lying or seen anyone else do that; Most of us have no knowledge of any of this so we can't speak to what did or did not happen. If this person had come here honestly and made a thread that explained some of the problems with the program, we would have had a completely different reaction. But the OP created a thread in which they offered to "answer questions" about Emory, and then proceeded to make more than a dozen separate posts, each of which reads like a Page Six blind item. The second account is suspicious. It is just so bizarre and wildly unprofessional that I cannot take it seriously.

Acceptance Freakout Thread

It is how many classes you teach per year. A 1/2 is one class in the fall and 2 in the spring, while a 2/1 is one in the fall and 2 in the spring, etc. -

Sounds amazing! Isn't it that case that Old Icelandic is very similar to modern Icelandic, yes? -

I saw that! I'm sad even though those rankings are kinda nonsense. -

Buffalo and Rochester have such inconsistent results between the two rankings systems. How should I read this?
