    Roundup

Hi all, I'm also right in the thick of the application process! However I'm feeling a little discouraged...I have been in touch with an alumni person at one of the schools I'm applying to and she reconfirmed something that we all kind of know - it really helps if you have a personal connection to one of the profs/they already know who you are. I have tried my best with sending emails to profs etc but I just feel like its not enough...do you know what I mean? I guess its like any job application if you have someone put in a good word for you personally your chances of success are increased. Any words of wisdom on this subject? Thanks!
  2. Hi all, I'm applying to a few schools where the possible length of WS is a bit vague - some say nothing at all (or I certainly can't find anything). If they don't specify, does that mean any length is fine? I know they often have 2MB size limit but due to file size reduction magic I can make 35 pages (+ pictures) under 2MB...so thats not a problem. Thanks!! Jilly
  3. I think they are both equal. Length is really all that makes them different. Anyone else having this problem?
  4. Hi all, I wanted to ask this question in the Art History forum because I'm sure it varies across disciplines. For my WS I could submit my senior seminar paper that is 18 pages OR the final chapter of my thesis (undergrad) which is about 35 pages...would it be better to send a contained paper even though its shorter or show one part of my major work? Thanks!
  5. Agree with the people above. I would dream for your Q score!! Lets put it into perspective - I got Q144 and thats about as good as I could dream of doing (and I studied really hard).
  6. Hi Ejmday, After the main test the ETS software let me select 4 schools to send my scores to - I think thats about the fastest way to do it, right? Thanks! Jily
  7. I think I tried to ask this question early but I don't think I phrased it well...so I took the GRE on Nov 10th and I got my scores on screen in the new scale (Q162/V144) - are these official? If I got precise scores, not ranges, why don't they show up on my GRE account page. Or am I totally missing something here? Thanks all!
  8. Thanks to all of you - I feel much better! Cheers!
  9. Hi all, So I have never heard anything concrete but apparently some schools have a minimum cut off for the GRE (combined score). I just took mine yesterday (V162/Q144) - obviously my Q is very very low but I was expecting this and Q is not my strong point. The scores added together are 306...but I was reading in another post that 320 could be a cut off point? Am I in danger or just psyching myself out? Thanks!
  10. I took it today, Nov 10th, and my scores appeared on my screen at the end of the test (new scale). I haven't gotten an official score report or anything.
  11. Thanks Melissa! Is it likely to change though? You never what ETS is going to do lol
  12. Help! Question! I got my scores today (new scale) V 162/ Q 144 (terrible Q, but thats me sadly) -- is this just an estimate? Do you think its more likely to go up or down? I'm freaking out bc I just scraped to the 90th percentile. Thank you all!
  13. Hi guys! I got my scores today in the new format! V 162/ Q 144 (I know, Q is not my strong point!). My question now: is that the real score or just an estimate? Cheers, Jilly
  14. I was thinking of including them just in case they want to look at them....!? I haven't seen any apps specify not to include - it would be easier if this was the case!
  15. Hi all, This may seem like a silly question...but since the new scores are out I assume at the end of the test you will see your scores (or score range?) on the new scale rather than then a score range from the old scale? I am taking the test on Nov 10th and I'm trying to figure out what I will see at the end. Thanks! Jilly

Hi all! I am applying to 5 PhD programs - totally shooting for the stars with where I'm applying and totally prepared to be knocked back BUT you have to be in it to win it! I am taking the GRE in the next couple days (shudder!) and still working on my personal statement and other bits and pieces. My area is 16th century Italian portraiture - specifically of leaders/rulers. I just love portraiture as a genre!!! Anyone else in portraiture (from any period!) ?? Also, Alexander Nagel is one of my POIs I am walking the line of feeling positive/putting the good vibes out there but also knowing there is a very significant chance I won't get in anywhere. Cheers, Jilly
  17. Hi all, I am submitting my final chapter of my undergrad thesis for my writing sample. Trouble is it includes a lot of references to pictures...do I submit them as well? I mean its art history - wouldn't the profs want to see the artworks you are talking about? I have no idea what to do! Thank you in advance! Jilly
  18. Hi all, According to ETS my scores should be sent my Dec 1st (I'm taking the test on Nov 10th) but since I'm in Australia do you think it will take longer to send the scores? I imagine its all done electronically so hopefully not? Thanks!
  19. Hi all, First, I hope a thread about this hasn't been started...? If so, can some direct me there? Today I took one of the Kaplan Practice tests online that you have access to when you buy one of their books. My scores were Verbal 720-800 and Quant 380-480. How do you think these tests compare to the real GRE? I don't want to get too excited about my good Verbal score. Thanks!
  20. Here's a question for all - I am going to start taking German this Dec/Jan ...should I somehow put that on my application? Or is obvious that people who want to be Art History PhD students would be doing this..? I hope that makes sense!
  21. Hello all! My focus is the Renaissance (or do we call it Early Modern these days?) period - particularly portraiture. I have yet to take the GREs (scheduled for Nov 10th) but I'm otherwise organized. I know getting in is so out of my control/kind of a crapshoot that it really discourages me some days ... but you have to be in it to win it! I worked really hard throughout college and did well - so I'm aiming high for grad school..but who knows if I'm good enough/what they are looking for. Good luck to everyone!
  22. Hi all, I am wondering how do you make the start of your SoP interesting and encourage the reader to keep reading? I don't want the first line to be some boring line/cliche. Any tips from people who have written an SoP or are writing one? Cheers
  23. Hi all, I am studying hard for the GRE - particularly the Quant section as it is not my strong suit at all. However lets just say I still manage to bomb out on the Quant but ace the Verbal. If overall my whole application was very strong but the Quant score was this one glaring low point...do you think that could be the basis of a school rejecting my application, or picking a similar applicant over me that had a high quant score? I just don't quite know how important the Quant score is to Art History selection committees. Any advice?? Thank you!
  24. Hi, Did you find it beneficial? If you haven't taken the GRE yet - would you consider doing this? Thanks! Jilly
