  1. I havent heard from Columbia yet either! I finally did hear back from Rutgers (rejected) the day after I accepted my offer somewhere else - curious, no? Has anyone else heard from Rutgers (about Phd) ?
  2. I'm still waiting even though I didn't even opt for the MA! Some people say they found out on the website - but I don't see anything when I log in. I guess I just need to wait for the email?
  3. arthistoryvoe2 - Right, I need a higher degree to get a job no questions there.
  4. First, congratulations! One of my profs told me that the Williams MA is the most prestigious MA program. I would say if Williams gives you funding (or even if not) go for them!! I only have the IFA to choose from right now which is why I'm leaning towards it Plus, here in Australia no one will give you any kind of art job without an MA which is why I'm anxious to move forward.
  5. Depending on what happens (financially - I may not have to take out loans) I might take another year off - and I could definitely perfect my Italian and work on my German. I guess I am just anxious to take the next step in life, you know. Thanks to everyone for their responses!
  6. Thanks mckee002 - hopefully I'll get another offer with funding. Fingers crossed!
  7. oh la la - I have done everything you have just mentioned (including writing my undergrad thesis which involved independent research) including taking a year off. Also, I'm Australian but went to the USA for my undergrad etc so I have travelled and I would say I definitely have "perspective" on my life. What I'm confused about is why people seem to be rejecting the idea of doing an MA at all (especially if not funded) - some people apply for MA specifically.
  8. So...I have tried to get into a PhD straight from BA but if that doesn't work what should I do? I am finding it impossible to get a job in Art History with only a BA so how do I make myself more attractive next year to go straight to PhD ? I feel so confused!
  9. Hi all, I posted in another thread that I got rejected from a PhD program but accepted to the MA. I want to know more/hear opinions about the "MA students fund PhD" students line of thought. I feel confused because many PhD programs won't accept you straight from undergrad (like me) you need to have a Masters...BUT people are saying don't accept MA offers without funding/don't be a cash cow.So what are you supposed to do - don't people generally pay for the MA degree? I thought an MA was a stepping stone/prep for a PhD? Is that wrong? Right now I just feel majorly discouraged and that getting accepted to an MA is not a big deal at all. Thoughts? Thanks all.
  10. I have also heard this "MA students fund PhD students" - it is discouraging but not everyone gets to go straight to PhD from BA (which is what I'm trying to do)...people do Masters degrees first in many cases. At this stage I'm just happy to be accepted anywhere and will hopefully hear back from other schools soon.
  11. I was sad to be rejected from the PhD from NYU IFA but glad to get offered the MA - has anyone else been offered an MA rather than the PhD (any school!) What are you thoughts?

@ OnceandFutureGrad - amazing advice! I have had a year break from school and I'm ready to go back but nonetheless you do make very valid points. I think if I do get rejected I will have to see the silver lining...and as the saying goes "everything happens for a reason" and if I have to wait its not the end of the world and many good things could happen in between. Thank you for your thoughtful response.
  13. @Hicks - it is unclear, based on my phone conversation, who exactly they interview! I assume they interview all potential candidates...but possibly interview more people than they actually accept (based on what I have read/heard)
  14. I talked to an admissions/admin person at the IFA and she said they would be sending out interview requests the week of Feb 13th or maybe the week after that. Hope that helps!

Hi NaturallyAesthetic, Thanks for your words of encouragement - much needed!!! (Especially after reading the results pages on this site - yipes!)
  16. I got it too! I called up Rutgers to ask about visiting (in general) and the way the lady mentioned the Open House day and it seemed like it was for everyone.

Hi all! I have my BA and rather than going for the terminal MA first I have applied only to PhD programs - I have a feeling I might get shut out of all of them just because the acceptance rates are so low. But it is possible to go straight to a PhD program from a BA, right? I mean the programs I'm applying seem like first 2 years are basically your masters (your right a big qualifying paper at the end of the 2 years) then the next 4 are your dissertation. Any words of encouragement or wisdom/experiences about trying to go straight into a PhD program? Thank you!!
  18. I have a casual meeting with one prof who seems very positive - but of course its no guarantee!!
  19. I am having mood swings something fierce - one moment 'yes i can do it!!!' next minute "are you kidding? you will never get in!" - its starting to take a toll on me to be honest. It sounds over the top I suppose but I just feel emotionally exhausted trying to keep myself buoyant and positive but also with a reality check that I might not get accepted anywhere. Yipes!
  20. Officially all done (and all reccs. submitted - phew!) - now I just feel anxious about having to wait so long to find out. One day I feel like I will absolutely get in and others I feel like how could I possibly be chosen. Ugh!!!

I am about to be finished in 20mins. Just have to hit submit on one last app then everything is done. Last recommender came through with all the letters this morning- thanks goodness! The waiting game is about to begin!
  22. I am going through exactly the same thing with reccs - my 3rd recommender has one day to go before the deadline.I sent him a friendly reminder - I just hope he actually pulls through. Don't these profs know we are all anxious and dying to get this process done with??? Also, do you think we get penalized if one of our reccs is a day or two late? I have "Dont Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin on repeat to help me calm down.

  24. Hi all, I'm not an English MA/PhD person...but I came across this thread and I am so glad I'm not the only one that feels freaked out about all of this. Like others in this thread I am trying to feel positive and put the good vibes out there but also trying to stay realistic - it makes me feel exhausted! I am just about to submit everything and then the dreaded waiting game begins D: D: Anyone have any tips and tricks to stay sane (and not refresh this website every 2 seconds closer to the date) while waiting? Thanks!
