  1. Hello folks, I'm a psychology undergraduate student, but my main research interest lies on history and theory of psychology. The problem is, there are only two H & T of psychology programs in North America and they are both in Canada (Calgary and Toronto) so I am strongly considering doing my PhD in history of science. Do you guys have an idea of which universities have the best programs (or research areas) in history of science, more specifically history of psychology? I appreciate any input from you!!
  2. I also have some problems with math and stats, but am willing to study and work hard and get to PhD. It's basically intermediate level math, so I don't think it's really far from understandable.
  3. Hello folks, I've been reading a lot about admission processes to north-american psychology departments (mostly on the internet) since I'll be applying to some of them soon. However, while surfing through amazon a few days ago I found this very interesting book and decided to buy it: http://www.amazon.com/Graduate-Study-Psychology-2012-Caroline/dp/1433810670/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1318700061&sr=8-3 Just received it a few days ago. I just wanted to share with you guys how much the book has helped me through this process. A (mostly) complete list of standardized information (grades, relevance of criteria, number of applications/number of admissions for each of the department's areas, faculty etc) is available for every university in US and Canada. It's an easy way to gain access to up-to-date information that sometimes is dispersed on the internet. Well, just thought you guys would like some review on this book and I find it pretty worthwhile.
  4. Lewin00: Thanks a lot for your reply. I've been thinking about this, too. It may be really hard to find a job since there are virtually no departments on this area in North America. If it turns to the worst scenario and I am not able to find a job, might go back to Brazil and get a job at a pretty good university since we still kinda lack PhD's. Believe it or not, I have three papers from this blog but have never directly accessed it. It's mantained by professor Chris Green, I guess. Well, thanks a lot for your input again. Carlyhylton: Wow, thank you VERY VERY much. Who's your mentor? I've exchanged a few e-mails with professor Thomas Teo, since he is probably the researcher with more approximations to my area of interest. It's been great and he really encouraged me to apply to York even though he said it's wildly competitive. How does this program "fit" into the university? Do they have a nice library and a reasonable number of financial aid possibilities? About Calgary (sorry for my mistake): the program seems to be pretty small, but professor Stam's work have surprised me in a very positive way. Do you know him? Is it easier to get into University of Calgary? Again, thank you.
  5. I am also very curious about this. One of my strong research interests lies on theory and history of psychology, but there's no graduate program available on the U.S. UNH's history of psychology PhD program was cancelled three years ago and since then there's nothing to do except applying to Canada's two main programs: York University's and Calgary University's. The question I've been asking myself was if a PhD degree from a canadian institution wouldn't be marginalized when compared to an equivalent american degree even inside canadian academia.
  6. I also am only applying to schools that offer full funding. It is not that hard to find.
  7. That's great! I think (or would it be - I hope?) my scores will reach this level in a short time. The recommendation letter stuff is kinda obscure to me as I'm brazilian and don't know exactly which aspects are to look for, or to emphasize, in such a letter. But it seems like I'm on the right path already. Thanks a lot, chak!
  8. Probably hospitals and pharmaceutical laboratories. That's all I can think about, but I believe there should be more non-academic position possibilities.
  9. Great idea! I also am trying to talk to them, ask about their application and admission process, scores etc.
  10. Probably cognition and perception. I really want to do research on neuroeconomics and decision making.
  11. Thanks a lot for your replies, guys!! DustSNK: That's a good advice! I will definetely get a research assistantship. And NYU's psychology department really is great, I've been dreaming of studying there for a long long time.. PsychGrad2011: I am working hard hard to raise my scores. Having a 3.7 GPA would give me much more confidence on the admission process. Great to hear about the advantage having these published articles and presentations can possibly give me. Thanks a lot for the advices. They'll make a real difference. I also hope to hear from more people if they have different opinions and stuff, or just think they have something important to say.
  12. Hello there! I'm strongly considering applying to NYU's and Columbia's psychology graduate (PhD) program but have a few questions: 1. How grade-selective are them? My current GPA is 3.65 (but I still want to raise it) and I've got 720Q and 680V GRE scores . Would that be enough? Of course, letters of recomendation and personal statement are also important, but I would like to hear from you guys about my scores. Are they good enough for these programs? 2. What is more important in an undergraduate curriculum: research assistantship or teaching assistantship? 3. Having a handful of presentations at big academic events and three published articles make a good difference in one's application? Thanks a lot!
