  1. University of South Carolina, sorry about that.
  2. I'm doing a pros and cons list to help me decide which school to go to. Does anyone have any opinion on the two schools? Any information I may find useful? Me: Seeking PhD in Statistics From CT Looking to go into academia post graduation
  3. Clemson should be a lock. I got in last year with lesser credentials.
  4. I find myself wanting to add a couple schools but it is late in the season. What schools are people applying to that have February deadlines?
  5. I was thinking about UNC of NCSU but the results page here show profiles far above me. I was only able to see one of my LORs, the other professors did not let me read what they wrote, which I believe to be the norm. This professor mentions my experiences as a peer tutor, my dedication to course work and the department functions, and most importantly he outlined my ability to teach myself through my neural network project. He mentions that he places me in the top 5% of students he has taught over the last decade because of my engagement and going beyond what was expected. I would assume the other letters to be similar as I did work very hard in school. I'll look, more seriously, into UNC. Thanks for the tip! As for my other choices, how do you think I would fare?
  6. BA Mathematics & BS Comp Science from Quinnipiac University, a smaller northeastern university. It ranked 11th in Usa News colleges in the northern region, closely compared with schools like Ithica and Marist. GPA: 3.46 (while working full time to pay tuition noted in statement) Senior Project & non-published paper on Artificial Neural Networks Predicting the Stock Market Internships at fortune 500 companies and start ups. Software engineer at large well known company during my year off. Tons of community service. GRE: Verbal 72nd% Writing 72nd% Quant 91st% Applied to: Yale stats Stony Brook applied math Rutgers Stat Uni South Carolina Stat CMU Stat and Machine Learning Temple Stat UMASS Amherst Stat I'm looking for another school or two because I'm feeling nervous that I may have been too ambitious. Please leave me feedback, as to whether or not you think I was too ambitious or a school I may be a good fit or have a good chance of getting into. I'm particularly open to schools on the east cost and/or schools that have machine learning departments/concentrations.
  7. Okay, I'm a recent graduate of Quinnipiac University in Hamden. There I received a BS in Computer Science and a BA in Mathematics. My cumulative was 3.46, my comp sci 3.58 and my math 3.48. I'm less than pleased with this but that's all I could have done with no buffer classes, working towards a double major and working 35-55 hours a week to pay my tuition. My GRE scores were good I received a 770 on the quantitative section, a 520 on the verbal and maybe a 5 on the writing. My resume is really good. I've interned several places including a fortune 500 company. My letters of recommendation are strong from school and the business world. I've also been told I can interview quite well, so I will set those up. Last admission season I got into Clemson and WPI. I decided to take a year off to take a job that didn't end up going through and didn't let me know until, unfortunately, it was too late. I'm interested in getting my PhD in Mathematics or statistics with a computer science concentration. What I mean by that is I like working with large data sets and extracting information through regressions etc. My senior project was forecasting the stock market using artificial neural networks. CMU has an incredible program, that I can only dream of getting into, a joint PhD in statistics and machine learning. I will apply there but with my attributes and no research background I doubt I would gain admission. I have formulated a list of schools in the northeast region, except Clemson, that may be a good fit and have listed them below. I'm somewhat strapped for cash so I'll probably only apply to three or four more schools outside of CMU. If anyone could help me by offering their opinion of the schools or their thoughts on my likelihood of admission I'd be very grateful. I am also open to suggestions of schools anyone thinks I should look into. WPI Clemson CMU Stonybrook Temple UMass Amherst Binghamton Boston University Cheers.
